I still don't see how they can be so stupid as to be surprised when the ratings drop when people don't know what fucking night the show's going to be on from week to week.
that's not true. they only changed Titus' timeslot once in the last season, after they brought it back from hiatus for underperforming on wednesday nights

Well, Titus is just fucking awesome. Didn't he have his own sitcom?
Yes, and it was awesome and on Fox.
So of course they canceled it.
Fox should fucking die.
yeah, how dare they cancel shows they promote the living shit out of that people still don't watch and that end up bleeding money
You want to know a nasty secret about TV?
The ratings are completely suspect. Almost no one in the industry, which is GIFUCKINGGANTIC actually knows how many people are watching something. Much less how many people are TIVOing, or buying based on what they watch, or watching on the televisions in their home, or how much attention they pay to the TV when it is on. No one has ANY idea, really. They only really go on Nielson Ratings (which are pretty much totally unreliable) and if the products advertised on the show seem to change in sales, and if people complain about the content of the show to the advertisers that buy in that show (this is what 'got' family guy)
Neilsens completely miss certain large demos - their college dorm coverage, for example, a demo of fashion makers with huge disposable income - is terrible. Likewise their coverage of secondary viewership in and out of the household is pretty rough. This is what tends to kill genre programming(this is what got say...firefly) and highly serial programming that people either TIVO or watch in groups (deadwood, weeds, the kind of shit that's migrating to HBO and showtime because regular TV chooses to cripple its creators). I am genuinely surprised LOST stayed on the air, and I suspect it has something to do with the initial premise resembling a reality show.
(I have both worked in broadcast, and been a nielsen rater [not at the same time or in the same market])

i'm not defending the ratings system, i'm just saying that if that's the criteria that execs and advertisers use to determine the worth of a show and a show underperforms in that aspect, it's going to be on the hot seat.

oh, I'm not saying you were wrong. I'm just saying that worrying about a program's RATINGS is something execs basically do because actually staying plugged into the show's buzz is too hard, and because they've yet to do the relevant research on things like the longterm loyalty worth of fandom - star trek may be a lower rated show then the west wing, for example, but one trekkie is worth 10 west wing viewers as an overall consumer of merch and dvds and such. The best moneymakers are shows like House that have a) a cheap, good cast, b) the potential for both narrow, focused fandom and household fandom.

those are all really good points. that kinda makes me think about how the ratings for a show like "Heroes" are thought of.

THATS the other thing
Heroes should have failed
but NBC in particular does this thing where they decide they are really going to put the juice behind something and they push it HARD. I mean they whore it like the Kings Of All Whoredom (which as TV execs, they basically are).
This is really good when it gets a neat show like "heroes" on the air...it's really bad when it leads to extra seasons of the apprentice.
I still don't see how they can be so stupid as to be surprised when the ratings drop when people don't know what fucking night the show's going to be on from week to week.

I meant that part as a general comment about Fox. They make some great shows, but man are they fucking stupid. Kinda like CBS being surprised that Jericho didn't do well when they were airing it against American Idol.
Titus had good ratings. Third highest in Fox's lineup, IIRC. The show was canceled because Titus refused to make concessions to the Fox execs who wanted it to be more like Dharma and Greg.
"A Minute With Stan Hooper" had high ratings too. I think it was their highest rated new show.
So you're telling me he can't have just come up with a similar joke? It happens all the time.
It's fine not to like Carlos Mencia, he's an idiot and he isn't very funny. What's irritating is people trying to find some objective reason to dislike him. Oh, one of his jokes is similar to a Cosby jokes? Well then he must have stolen it!
Adding a bitter, unfunny meathead like Joe Rogan just stirs things up a bit more.
He admits to it in the Rogan video. "It's hard to come up with stuff..." or some such. It's obvious he's a joke thief. Whether or not you care about it is one thing, saying it isn't happening is wrong objectively. End of story.
Not to mention that it wasn't just a similar joke. It was a paraphrased version of the exact same story, but that's beside the point. I stopped liking Mencia the moment I saw his show. I wanted to like it but, from the first episode, I found no funny in it. On ocassion I'd smirk at the program, but it's consistently sucked balls from the moment it aired. All these claims at him stealing material just gives me reasons to dislike him, on top of him having a terrible show.
And as for Titus, I really like his show. At least at first. You can't deny that they were definitely pulling some stops later on to grab more ratings, such as introducing his sister. Does he even have a sister in real life? o_O

Titus's second standup special was so horrible, though.
So horrible.
Bogged down with sentimental crap about his family; he included 9/11 over half a bloody decade after the fact, and worse, the ending was ripped straight out of Robin Williams' Broadway special (which, considering Williams, was probably ripped from something else).
Titus had a family and that destroyed him. A depressingly typical ending for comedians.
I think I've spotted the problem: You have no soul.
He said things about 9/11 that weren't commonly being said and said it in a fashion that was entertaining and at times funny. No shit it was years later because anybody who even thought of mentioning right away would have been lynched. He was a bit on the late side for TV but that's the nature of Televised Comedy Specials.

Compared to Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding the whole of that thing was sentimentalist dreck, and it actually managed to get worse at times. He still got a giggle out of me every now and then, but it's obvious his comedy took a major hit.
I remember reading a review of "The Best of Eddie Murphy" DVD collection, which went something like:
"THe Nutty Professor? Doctor Doolittle? Holy Man? What in the world happened to Trading Places, Coming to America, 48 Hours? Oh, that's right -- Paramount owns them. Wait for them to come out with their own set."
Titus had a family and that destroyed him. A depressingly typical ending for comedians.
Seriously. I mean what the hell happened to Eddie Murphy? How did the guy from Raw get reincarnated into an animated donkey?
Look at the list of recent movies he's been in. So depressing.
At least he knew better than to do the Daddy Day Care sequel.
Which is good, because it was a chance to dangle a paycheck in front of Cuba Gooding Jr. and get him out of our hair sooner.
(See, I assume he'll kill himself from shame)
I can only assume he was on the verge of suicide anyway. I mean, how desperate for work do you have to be, to take on a film franchise that Eddie Murphy has abandoned?"
I never got the hate for Dane Cook, myself. He's not particularly funny, he's just manic, but he doesn't really do anything wrong.
he was popular. thus, hate.
I hate(d) him.
No... I really hate him. He's not funny and his humour basically just perpetuates that whole "Us men are stupid, you women are so smart, it's a wonder you put up with us!" bullshit. At least the stuff I've seen is. I watched most of one of his specials and that's basically all it was.

If you ever watch the Dane Cook impression on MAD TV, it really highlights just why so many people hate Dane Cook. His jokes are all about the delivery, the jokes themselves are rarely, if ever, funny.

alright, I was going for the difference between not liking him and hating him was because of all the chatter.
I listened to him and though hey, this guy's jokes are all in the delivery or referencing shit (burger king LOL! chef boy r d THIS GUYS A GENIUS!). that's not really funny. and then I had a year or two of people being fucking in love with him and discovering him, and it drove me to hate him... that's what I meant.
luckily now most people don't like him. he's going to be in a fucking terrible movie very soon and hopefully it will flop so we never hear from him again.
Here's the thing with Titus getting the axe- Watch Norman Rockwell is bleeding, like the entire thing, and then wonder why for a few moments why Christopher Titus was pretty damn absent from the season 3 episodes and they tended to focus on Erin's fucked up family instead of the fucked up family that had been the series for two seasons.
The reason for the cancellation/Titus badmouthing FOX execs I've seen bandied about the most is pretty obvious. Is it true? Maybe. But I have no trouble seeing FOX reacting in a way that jives with that explination.

Care giving those of us not in the know the Reader's Digest version of what may have happened?
In any event, someone asked (I'm paraphrasing) "Who watches Mencia's show?" My co-workers.
Now, I can understand why the 18 year old watches it. He's a moron. But my boss absolutely loves Mencia. "Duh duh-duh" is said often in my office. My boss thinks he's so cutting edge and ballsy, and basically swallows the whole "Stereotypes are true, even if we don't want to voice that opinion" shit that is the foundation of Mencia's "comedy." It's frustrating.
For the record, I am thrilled to learn that Larry the Cable Guy started out as a yuppie performer. New Hampshire is a surprisingly redneck state (at least, the area I live in), so I like knowing that this supposed hero of the everyman is just acting. Honestly, around here people quote Larry like they quote the Bible. I more or less thought that it was an outright act anyway, but since I've never watched any of his performances (I abhor just about everything rednecks enjoy), I could never really gauge how much, if any, was real and how much was exaggerated.
It's a shame that these dullards are popular. I'd kill for Comedy Central to show better comedians -- Chappelle, Cross, Oswalt, Izzard -- and shows like Kids in the Hall and Newsradio.
If you ever watch the Dane Cook impression on MAD TV, it really highlights just why so many people hate Dane Cook. His jokes are all about the delivery, the jokes themselves are rarely, if ever, funny.
But couldn't the same be said of much of Mitch Hedberg's material?

It's pretty much true of every good, famous comedian. You don't get to be a good comedian by just reciting good jokes.

I would say yes and no... in fact, when I saw Mitch Hedburg live his delivery actually impeded his ability to tell jokes. Of course, he was high as a kite and about two weeks away from his death, but regardless... I think Mitch's material can be said without the delivery and still be funny... compare...
"An escalator can never break... it can just become stairs." That's still kind of funny, even without the delivery.
Now walk up to someone and say "pickles" over and over.

Still though, to trash a comedian for having an entire act based on delivery alone seems kind of weird. Delivery is as legit as anything else.
I guess... to me it is a matter of style over substance... and, if you don't like the delivery, there is really nothing else to fall back on. I mean, a lot of really, really good comedians had their entire acts based on delivery... Steven Wright, Rodney Dangerfield, the aforementioned Mitch Hedburg... but I still feel their acts had much more substance then Cooks... and I think they will be remembered long after him.
Having said that though, there really isn't anything concrete I can base this on... I do know that I've never liked Dane Cook, but if you held a gun to my head I still don't know if I can give you a satisfactory reason why.

I mean, I did like Dane Cook. I'm actually not certain if my apathy towards him at this point is due to him actually growing stale, or the sheer amount of hate directed his way. It's really cool to dislike the guy these days.
I still fondly remember his mimicking the scissor-kicking open of a public restroom stall.
