Hey are there any good sidescrolling beat 'em ups for DS?
The subject says it all. I was out at a shop and I saw some Full Metal Alchemist tie in for 15 bucks. That doesn't speak well for the quality of the game, being A) licensed and discount. However, looking at the back, it seemed to be a side scrolling brawler with magic and a metal man. That seems hard to fuck up.
Can anyone recommend me a good DS beat 'em up? Are there any? GBA is considered, but obscure titles (ie not available at an EB) are discouraged and GBA titles should be of high quality.
I'm not sure if this will fit your idea of a "beat-em-up", but there are two very EXCELLENT Castlevanias out there, with magic and side-scrolling and vampires and beat-of-them-up.
The ninja Turtles game for the GBA is really good. Viewitful Joe DS is okay, has some very nice puzzles but the game just made me want to play the GC version since the combat is a watered down version of the GC game
EDIT: Yes, Julius mode on Castlevania Dawn of sorrow is a great action sidescroller. I actually started oging through the main game with fist based weaponry only and it is actually a damn good 'beat em up' if you play only using kung fu moves

Oh, shits, almost forgot, a 3d Ninja Gaiden game is coming out on the DS. That should be pretty damn sexy. The sword is apparentley controlled via the touchscreen, it's either the sword or every facet of Ryu's movement. Either way watch out for that.
Capcom did a release for the GBA a while back that's a collection of three of their olde side-scrollers - Bionic Commando, Strider, and Mighty Final Fight. If you can find it at a good price, it's definetily worth it.
Old stuff is cool, but I've played almost all of them and am looking for something new, and something with more recent touches, using the sexy graphical possibilities of the DS. Am I out of luck?
For GBA, Astroboy has a lot of beatemup combo qualities. Check the new spyro GBA thread as well. I havnt played it, but I believe there was a decently received starwars beatemup on the DS.

Lego Star Wars? I heard it wasn't any good on DS. Astroboy doesn't interest me.

Is that just because it's Astroboy?
Because, really, it's one of the best beat-em-ups I've ever played.
I'll also throw out some love for Ninja Five-O... beat-em-up meets Bionic Commando (grappling hook ftw). Awesome.
Guardian Heroes Advance is pretty decent, too... just little to no link to the original.

Seriously. I bought the game because of Treasure, not the license. One of the best games on the GBA.

Except for the fact that they are tediously dull.
There, I said it. Flame me boys, I can take it.
I actually wouldn't totally disagree with that. I got Portrait of Ruin and didn't like it nearly as much as I thought I would. I don't know if I'd say dull, but I haven't felt a desire to pick up the game in months after getting one of the crappy endings.
I love Gunstar Super-Heroes, but it's almost the exact same game as its predecessor except the original is better.

I've come to realize that Treasure has only done few good games and that there's a reason why I never heard of them until Ikaruga. Astroboy is not all that and Advanced Guardian Heroes is just bad.

Already beaten Aria, Dawn, and Portrait.

That's the one that is the same main game as the GBA version right? I hear the 3D space battles are like a rogue squadron-lite, are they any good?
Do check it out, maybe rent it before you consider to buy.
Yes. This.
Is it still coming out on October 1st?
Anyone seen this before? Just came across it, and it looks pretty neat.

Don't make me Charge Beam you.

edit: commence treasure-fanboy ranting. Please don't?
Not really side scrolling and you have to import it but whatever. It's stupid fun.
