Oh man. Fallout MMO? Won't happen.
But if it does?

FUCK YES!

What the hell is wrong with you people?

You really want to grind scorpions for hours in a bland wasteland. The question is, what the hell is wrong with you?

Anyone who has any hope for this is quite frankly, delusional. Name the last good game Interplay was involved with.

Sorry, I'll need to ignore your scorpion comment, as you have a WOW sig.

As someone who doesn't have a WoW sig... seriously. We have our good Fallout game. Interplay won't be bringing it to us. They're dead, these are their last desperate attempts to keep their 401k.

I think Fallout would be a good MMO property, it lends itself well to an mmo setting I think - but I also doubt that Interplay will pull it off well, or even get it published at all.

It NEEDS permadeath though. It's a harsh gritty wasteland. They should use SPECIAL, so characters at level 20 are rare. Those are the badasses.
Has there ever been a MMORPG with permadeath? I know that LotR Online was going to have it but that was back when UO first came out, it got a complete redesign since those early days.

Permadeath is a really quick way to assure that nobody will ever play your game. Especially if it has any form of pvp in it.

A big problem with pvp in almost every game up to this point is that it's all or nothing. If you want to be a bandit, you can't just disarm people and take their stuff, usually the only way to get items off of an opponent beyond trading with them is off of their corpse, and if your victim offers to give you their items or money through a trade, they can still turn on you at any point.

Just having some way to temporarily disable an opponent without actually killing them would do a great deal for PVP, especially if permadeath is involved. You would still be able to get the thrill of beating people up and taking their stuff, but if you're not an absolute scumbag, you don't have to destroy your opponent's character. And if you do get a reputation for going around killing people without good reason, not only would you be hunted down by the anti-pvp people who may or may not exist, you might also be hunted down by the non-lethal bandits who don't people to be suicidally aggressive just because they're being approach by a group of masked and armed people who obviously want their money.

what does posterity have to do with making a good game? being remembered as 'that game that nobody played because it was permadeath only' seems like pretty shitty posterity.

Perma death clearly wouldn't work in a traditional EQ-clone MMORPG, but I'm sure you could innovate to make something which produces a mindset similar to that found in roguelikes. i.e. one where you expect death and don't mind it.

Okay, seriously. To everyone who thinks this is a good idea, what exactly about Fallout makes it more appropriate for an MMO than just making a Mad Max MMO? Or a Gorkamorka MMO? Or just a generic post-apocalyptic setting?

You know, if the hard-core, permadeth, insanely harsh pvp MMO a lot of people clamor for ever actually gets made, not only will all but the hardcore pvp crowd ignore it, but 95 percent of the hardcore pvp people would get pissed off with it within a week.

Except it's not? It doesn't even have funding yet, which makes it just as likely as the other two. And what does that have to do with the whether or not it'll translate well into an MMO?

Dijem, that doesn't make sense. I love Fallout, too, but if they're going to waste their time making a game, shouldn't it be a good game that feels cohesive instead of something that just has Fallout's name slapped on it?

Regardless of hating the idea of an MMO Fallout, which after initial doubts I do think could be kind of cool...

Interplay.

Think hard, what was the last game they released? If you don't know the answer, you're getting close to understanding why no one wants them near the Fallout universe again.

If I could size=20 a rolleyes, I would. I saw that coming about a page or so back.

Look, you can look forward to it if you want. It won't be a good fit for the Fallout mythos, it will be poorly handled as many things were by Interplay, and it will die about as quickly as Auto Assault did. Those of us who are trying to convince you to not waste your money and anticipation--as well as those of trying to convince Caen to not even bother--will be putting our energies toward decent games.
Wren wrote: »

Because it's not a waste of time to at least discuss it. At least, I thought that was the point of a forum like this.

does it matter who developes? this is interplay... they'll rush them, force them to make changes and try to take control of the development all the way through.

Knowing that Interplay is making the decision is enough. There's a reason they've been forced to fire-sale their licenses and are under a mountain of debt; they're morons. Plain and simple.

Even if they were just the publisher, they've made enough mistakes being a publisher before. A bad publisher can kill a game. Look at Lucas Arts (publisher) rushing Obsidian (developer) to finish Knights of the Old Republic 2--hailed as conceivably one of the best console RPGs... until the last few hours because of the publisher rushing it out.

Besides, I'm decidedly of the opinion that franchises shouldn't be expanded unless it fills a need. This is not a need, this is a money-grab. I am far more interested in Borderlands that was, conveniently, revealed today on Joystiq. Here's a wasteland/vehicle combat game that isn't tied in the isolated, lone-man-takes-on-the-world core of Fallout. It can be done.

But seriously, just don't play the MMO. I for one am really glad this might come out, regardless of quality. If it sucks, I'll skip it, just like BOS. If it's good, well, they've got my money.
