    Straight from the man's mouth.

lot of NEXTWAVE boosters here on s_d, so I thought I'd give you the news directly:

Okay. I just this second got the go-ahead from Nick Lowe to talk about this. So here we go:

Sales on the singles are okay, if not great. Sales on the first collection have apparently been terrific.

We were on such a roll with NEXTWAVE that I was actually into the idea of doing a second year, which is highly unusual for me and work-for-hire properties. So Marvel sat down and looked at the numbers, as they wanted to do a second year too.

What they found was that, at our current sales levels, they could afford for me to write it, but not for Stuart to draw it. Stuart, as a Marvel-exclusive artist, commands a fee commensurate with his astonishing talent. I'm WFH-exclusive too, but they just send me whisky and loose women and I'm fine. So, basically, I could continue to write NEXTWAVE, but we'd need to find another artist. This, to me, was just wrong. I mean, Stuart would obviously be given a far better job that had actual readers attached to it, but it still seemed a bit like the numbers were conspiring to fire him for doing his job too well. Everyone at Marvel pitched in to try and make it work, but the numbers were just against us.

So NEXTWAVE #12 will be the final issue of the ongoing series.

(To clear up a common misconception: NEXTWAVE was always pitched as an ongoing series. However, my original intent was to do 12 and then pass it on to someone else. This got garbled, somewhere down the chain of communication, and so the first issue or two got solicited as "part xxx of 12".)

However. The numbers game changes when you posit things in terms of limited series.

NEXTWAVE #12 will be the last issue of the ongoing series: but there will be more NEXTWAVE to come, presented as a sequence of limited series.

This was all worked out some months ago, so I had plenty of time to work the final NEXTWAVE sequence into a conclusion of sorts. #11 even features a twelve-page spread that you'll have to buy six copies of the comic to assemble into its full splendour. Everyone wishes I'd thought of that eight or nine months ago.

That was the news. Return to your duties.

    Sad, yet promising.

"Mad props" to Ellis for sticking with Stu. I think even more highly of him after that.

Am I allowed to talk about anything Ellis here?

    I just finished Transmetropolitan.

I have no words. I laughed. Loudly. A great, triumphant laugh.

Transmetropolitan was my first exposure to Ellis, and I have to say I am extremely happy I decided to read Transmetropolitan.

    Er, sorry

What I meant is that I kept waiting for the art to go back to normal, and it never did.

You know, like the shadowy, not-all-there art would end when the flashback did

    right

which is why it was hard to tell when it was a flashback and when it wasn't

I thought Daniejl Dsilizij or whatever the fuck (who spells Daniel with a J, come on people) was, I mean no JH Williams III, but it worked for me. It's a slightly different story and I guess it's going to be a bit moodier, looser in the art. I still love Tapper though, so it's okay with me.

Nextwave was simply the best. The last page was just so beautiful. I almost shed a tear.

You have GM Doom Patrol references, the Ultimates, the Avengers, upside-down art, more internet stuff. Just wonderful.

Anyone who's not buying this is a terrible, terrible person.

I really wanted to see the designs for Slightly Creepy Policewoman and The Homosexuality. Maybe next issue.

    (Now, on to Planetary!)

Ed: Planetary was also very good. One issue to go. I can't wait!

I thought slightly creepy policewoman was supposed to refer to Montoya, the way the others referred to the Midnighter, Apollo, and Northstar. I would assume they won't appear at all, since they seemed to be sort of a throwaway joke.

Planetary managed to come in as second best issue this week, which has never happened before and would not have happened any other week that Seven Soldiers' hadn't come out.

Definitely tied it all together. I know Ellis expects lots of internet hate but he won't get it from me. I like how there was no big fight, just the revelation of what it means, in the end, to be an archaeologist of mysteries. He can be as cynical as he wants, Ellis always makes me feel like an infinite point of wonder.

Hi. I'm new to these forums and the 15+ pages of this thread proved a bit too daunting for me to read in one sitting. With that in mind, I apologize if this very thing has been discussed here.

I don't know about comics, but some of my former aquaintances did. Occasionally I would have something thrust upon me and be told that it was "genius." A few years ago I was introduced to Transmetropolitan and fell completely in love with it.

Is there another series which has already been completed that anybody might recommend for me? I'm very busy and don't think I'd manage to keep up with something ongoing- I prefer to purchase trades and read at my pace.

    Thanks!
