register for xbox live and grab the following demos
beautiful katamari
virtua tennis 3
stranglehold
trial version of geometry wars
trial version bomberman live
Dead rising Demo
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Demo
Blue Dragon Demo
Dead or Alive 4 demo
i only recommend these solely because they can stand by themselves as trial versions, without the temptation of killing your wallet. they can also be played over and over again without getting old with the exception of Blue Dragon. this is the list i constantly keep on my 20gig HD as well, it gives me a good variety of what the 360 gives. everything else comes and goes on my HD, but these stay. i would mention the bioshock demo but games like those are well worth buying already.
if you have some friends over, good demo games on the fly are Fusion Frenzy 2 for that party game feel, GRAW 2, for multiplayer co-op and Perfect Dark Demo for multiplayer FPS. these games last pretty long in terms of playability with people.
Make sure you get the one with the HDMI port. They are selling them now, at least online from what I can tell.
If you are going to use your 360 as a primary DVD player and want to upconvert your dvds, you need an hdmi cable or the vga one.
A second controller would be a good investment for friends.
As for games, what do you like? I range from FPSs to fighting games to adventure ones. So far, I would look into these based on my experiences:
1. Prey (can be had online dirt cheap, like $10 and is worth more)
2. Gears of War
3. Bioshock (when it comes out, demo is amazing)
4. Madden 2008 (if you like football, and the toys r us deal they have going on now is awesome!)
There are tons more games out there that are aw0esome, but these are the ones i like right now. FEAR is also a really nice one too.
Madden I know people can be either into or not, I am a big NFL2K5 fan, but this version of madden is quite fun, I like it better than APF08 and not just because of the graphics. And the price is definitely right right now. You can get a 20% coupon online to buy the game at a toys r us store, and if you buy it right now this week, you get %50 off any other game. i picked up Madden 08 for $48 and got Wii Zelda for $25.

As someone who should be getting one when I get out of work today (I've been tracking the package for the past 2 days obsessively), I wanted to know whether chargers were a good investment.
I know my friend's X-Box wireless controller eats batteries, and I was wondering if it's a good investment to just recharge them.
Otherwise, so long as I'm near a modem, do I need anything beyond more controllers?
Edit: Bah! Okay... why will I thank you, though?
Edit Also: Thanks for the demo list, delphinus. I plan on basically relying on demos for a few days until I can grab Bisoshock.
so far the only games ive played that i know i like are elder scrolls and gears of war. i like pretty much all types of games except racing and some sports titles.

also i take very good care of my systems if i keep my 360 well ventilated will i still get the 3 rings of death?
There's a chance yes. Look for an Xbox 360 that is labelled with HDMI on the box (On the Premiums, not necessarily the Elites). These are the newest hardware.
As for games that are must-haves, I would say you should pick up Dead Rising, The Darkness, Gears of War, Oblivion (you mentioned you liked it), Crackdown, and Kameo (not everyone will agree with this one, but it's a fun little action adventure for dirt-cheap).

The Darkness and Kameo are probably the safest rentals. Maybe Gears as well.

Get the three year extended warranty when you buy it-- it will cover any issue you have with the machine, and gets you some preferential treatment for service.
Also, cheap games ($20-$30 range, if not less):
Call of Duty 2
Dead or Alive 4
Earth Defense Force 2017 (Super fucking fun multiplayer)
Fight Night Round 3
Fable (OXBox)
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (OXBox)
Halos (OXBox)
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.
As someone who should be getting one when I get out of work today (I've been tracking the package for the past 2 days obsessively), I wanted to know whether chargers were a good investment.
Chargers are an excellent investment. I can't recommend the the plug n play kit enough or the quick charge kit if you plan on chewing through charges.
I got Crackdown and Call of Duty 2 as my first games, mostly because they were reasonably cheap. Crackdown is amazingly excellent. Best superhero game I've played so far. It's what every Marvel beat-em-up should have been.
I'm thinking of going out tonight to pick up a quick-charge, and maybe one more game. I'd like to not break the bank, but it seems like R6:Vegas and Gears of War are my choices for fun co-op... and then there's Bioshock in a few days...
God damn. Being current-gen is confusing and hurts my wallet.
Crackdown is amazingly excellent. Best superhero game I've played so far. It's what every Marvel beat-em-up should have been.
Than you've never played Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. This sucker is BC and amazing. You can pick it up for $10-20 now. Even supports Widescreen.

I will say Hulk is the other game that manages it, actually. I really should pick that up.
Only problem with Hulk is that you don't get to throw bombs or shoot rocket launchers. But you do get car fists.
Wait. Why did I not get that game when I got my PS2? I'm kind of stupid.
How's the dvd drive noise on the newer elites and 360 premiums out of curiosity? Iv'e had my 360 replaced a couple times but still have the same ol' noisy drive.
I really wanted to like Crackdown but it's total lack of structure, and seemingly complete lack of difficulty(I got as far as killing 2, maybe 3 of the crime bosses), turned me off. And the way it was described to me, I imagined more super in the super-cop, other than just jumping high.

I have an Elite. The drive is fairly noisy. It's not as bad as the Dreamcast, but it still sounds like it is eating my disc every time I play Gears of War.
FWIW, my wife usually watches TV in the same room while I play on my 360 (I have it hooked to my computer's LCD) and has never complained about the drive noise - she just turns up the TV a little.
I think it's still a crapshoot as to wether you get a noisy drive or not. Microsoft is still using 3 differnent kinds as far as I am aware.
Although even the noisy drives arent really that bad.
My drive was really noisy until I realized it was the chrome plate vibrating against the white faceplate. If I put my finger on the chrome, it was a lot quieter. Playing around with it eventually got it so that they wouldn't touch with a game spinning.

Wait. Why did I not get that game when I got my PS2? I'm kind of stupid.
You can throw various large items in Hulk that explode...including tanks. You can also rip the rocket pods off of their treaded chasis and throw each missile from the pod individually at whatever you want. So it is like being able to throw bombs, very large bombs, and like having a missile launcher only the launcher is your freaking arm.
Seriously, man, Crackdown was a disappointments to me because the gameplay wasn't anywhere near as deep or spectacular as Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. One melee attack animation? What, no! You throw, instead of swing like a baseball bat, light posts? No! Cars? Well, I guess i can throw them because driving them sure isn't worth a damn. Not to mention throwing stuff, in general, felt weak.
Man, I'm going on record, fuck Crackdown. Over hyped to the nth degree. Worth a rental and that is it. I'm sorry I bought it. Lots of potential, love to see a sequel that wasn't so damn shallow.
360 Premium
Extra wireless controller + battery pack
charging station
VGA cable (depending on your display of choice)
Forza 2 - Racing
GRAW2 - Tactical FPS
R6:Vegas - Tactical FPS
Bioshock - FPS/RPG/Strategy hybrid
Gears of War - FPS
Guitar Hero 2 (if you don't have the PS2 version)
I would suggest downloading the demos of anything and everything, even if you don't think the game will interest you. I've been surprised.

There will, however, be sequels with all that. They pretty much went on record with it. Crackdown was an experiment that they now want to make a franchise out of to compete with GTA.

QFT.
The charging station is really fast too. Just keep a spare battery or set of AAs around in case your battery pack dies.
