I'm sorry but you can look back at the "good" sonic games and Sonic is still pretty lame. The games are good, but there's nothing actually cool about the character if you're not a 12 year old.
While you might argue that it's irrelevant whether or not the character is "cool", the thing is with Sonic it's partly relevant. When you make image such an integral part of the narrative it impairs the game if the characters don't stand up.
Look at Mario. Mario isn't cool. Mario's retro, but he's not cool. It doesn't matter though because Mario Bros. was never about Mario being cool, cool never entered into it and as a result is completely irrelevant.
Sonic has always been a character that's been about being "cool". Even the recent spinoffs suffer from this poor planning. Shadow is supposed to be badass, for instance.
The thing about cool is that when what was cool becomes outdated, the best you can hope for is camp. Without camp, something I think isn't there in the Sonic franchise, you have what might be a fun game being sold by a character and writing and narrative that makes people roll their eyes. And by people I mean adults because let's face it, kids aren't people. They're nasty, horrible little leeches.
It's good that the president of SoA realizes that Sonic isn't cool. Maybe they can focus on making games that don't try so hard to play up Sonic's cool factor and focus more on making games that play up their game play. That might result in better games.
Or they might keep searching for a new source of cool as they seem to have been doing for so long now. I don't know.

Anyways, I agree with DrDizaster. Sonic was always supposed to be cool, but you can't tell me you ever thought he was cool once you hit puberty. His games are fun but Sonic is pretty much a dork from the 90's. Doesn't he like to say "Radical?"
It wasn't until Sonic Adventure that he became a tall, skinny, breakdancing, rail-grinding DJ.

Really, aside from crazy changes in game style, the biggest issue the Sonic series has is that it keeps throwing in humans and so forth.
It should have stuck with cartoony, abstract stuff. Even if it was -dark- cartoony, abstract stuff.

Man ironically Shadow the Hedgehog is the best playing console Sonic game since Sonic 3&K. While it may be ridiculous and over the top its just so over the top its awesomely cheesy.

Sonic Wildfire is better.
Only thing is, today's kids don't even *like* Sonic. And that's only when they *know* about him.
Back in 1990, yes, kids were crazy for him, because back then the choice was between Mario and Sonic, and Sonic had the almighty 'tude on his side. So kids either grew up loving Sonic or, if they were comfortable with their manhood, Mario. There was no in-between and there was no third alternative.
But look at today. Mario's still around and kicking, but if you're 10 years old and don't wanna control that fat plumber and want someone who's cool, sure, Sonic is there... but so is Crash Bandicoot (to a much lesser extent than 8 years ago, true), so are Ratchet & Clank, so's Jak & Daxter, so's Spyro and Sly Cooper, and about a billion other "cool" mascot characters who are all currently pushing out FAR superior games than the recent Sonics. You can either have Mario, Sonic, or a Sonic equivalent with non-shitty gameplay. Thus, the kids don't tend to pick Sonic, because they didn't grow up with him and have no nostalgia factor.
Sega really needs to wake up and realize "It's for kids" is no excuse for shitty gameplay, because the kids have more and more alternatives and are becoming more discerning customers.
Only 12 year olds could look at Shadow with a gun and say "Wow, look at him. He's got attitude. It's gansta-licious*.
*has no idea what terminology punk kids are using these days.
