So I bought FF IVa a year ago and haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I also never played the original on the SNES. So should I just hold out and wait for this remake, or go ahead and play the GBA version?

There are supposed to be a fair amount of changes in the DS version, so if you're interested in seeing a before-and-after, you may want to play FFIVa for a while.
I would like to think that FFIVDS will be the definitive version, based on the sheer number of letters required to use its shorthand.
FF IV is coming out on December 20th. No US release as of yet, but c'mon.
It'd be a smart move to release it in America this year too. There aren't any FF releases until Crisis Core next year.
Tactics if you count that.
Yeah, but they have to translate it. Next year is full of FF releases in the states. RW, FFTA2, FF:CC, and probably this much later.
Bah. They should have worked on the localization at the same time. That's something Japanese companies are trying to do now anyway; why not try it with a smaller release?

The companies that do try it usually don't do it with a giant text fiend like ff4. Remember, if the developers stay trhue to the original concept of the project, that the game could be quite a bit longer than FF4, which was a decent 25 hour game.

As I mentioned in the other (and unnecessary) thread, I'm a bit wary about Rydia's sexy new look here. It's always been debatable whether she actually spent realtime years in that cave, maturing mentally as well as physically, or if she spent a few days in the cave while her body aged rapidly.
I've always been a believer of the latter due to her personality as an adult (and how she mentions how "I guess my body grew a bit"), plus the former is kind of sad; Spending all those years with no human interaction, wondering how Cecil and Rosa are doing, sacrificing her young years just to train? Rydia's story is tragic enough without this.
Plus the former creates too many nagging questions (why doesn't time move slowly for Cecil and company when they revisit the cave?), so the "rapid growth" theory is the better one overall.
It would be incredibly amusing if they added some extra scenes where Rydia asks Rosa how she can fight with her boobs in the way, or why Edge keeps giving her weird looks.

I think time moves faster in the monster world. She only mentions the fact that her body grew for two reasons.

It's not a sexy "new" look. It's the exact same look she had in the SNES version, only now you can tell because it's not on a tiny little sprite.

A. She was a kid when last they met.
B. She is now Smokin' Hot.
Exactly, and since Cecil and company only spent a relatively short amount of time there during the game(maybe a few days at most), back in the "normal" world, it is like nearly no time has passed at all. So to someone observing them entering the portal to the world of summoned monsters, it would probably seem like they then exited said portal less than a split second later. Kinda like the hyperbolic time chamber from DBZ.
Looking pretty good, though people new to the game might want to watch out. There's some spoilers (albeit relatively early game) near the middle to later part of the video.

Cecil and Kain are way too goofy looking. Well, Yang is too, but who really cares about him. Jesus, I can't believe he's been shown before all the other options. I'm kind of interested in seeing Cid, though.
Anyway, what the hell is with the music choice? That's gotta just be like general lounge music, right?
Oh man, Adult Rydia summoning the Mist Dragon. Shit Hot. This is gonna be so good. Btw, I don't think that music was for FFIVDS, the New Year's Song was just playing really loud at the TGS for some reason. Odd.
I will not be satisfied if there are any less than a dozen Kain backstabbings. Also also, we require more Edge/Rydia screen time, if only so that we can live vicariously through the ninja prince. Lucky git.
Hopefully with the additional scenario they add in even more Kain betrayals!
Well he switched teams on you, what, three times in the SNES version?
By my calculations, the "extra 75%" that we're getting for this game will be another two and a half Kain betrayals, and two more "Let's rescue Rosa!" scenarios.

That's Auld Lang Syne, you git.

It's not like anyone ever made any references to the monster world at all. Canonically, they might not even have entered in the first place after Rydia came back. They could spend a year or a day there - big whoop. The only problem would be if time moved slower in the Summoned World, since we could enter it, chill for an afternoon, and come out to find Zeromus laughing over the charred remnants of human civilization.
Hurry up and bring it Stateside, Squenix. Or the consequences for you shall be dire.
Excellent response. The chances of it not coming over? Slim.
I know. It's just that I remember the last time we were supposed to get a remake of DQIV. There was an ad for it right in the DQVII manual. Once burned, twice shy and all that jazz.
Oh god I am so sold on FFIVDS after watching that French video. Luckily I never bought the GBA version because of the nasty slowdowns. This was also the first RPG I ever beat...maybe even played.
And I love how much more cinematic all of the cut scenes are now.

It is pretty awesome! Though it looks like we won't actually get to see the characters attack during battle, which is kind of a letdown, but not really a big one.

haha yeah
wait xenogears game out 7 years after FFIV. shut up
Stolen with only minor shame from another thread.
It's not FF4? That's what I'm getting, let me rehost it and put it up.

True, but this is Square. They're giant.
Top is FF, bottom is DQ. I've missed a fuckton of DQ scans since then. It looks awesome.

Also, updated the DQ IV section with some sweet scans.
