So I managed to get to level 13. I'm having a good time but there are some pretty major balance issues so far (which I'm hoping they'll address pre-release).
In Matchmaking, the teams really need to be reshuffled after every match. The last couple of games I was in, two players on one team managed to put up absolutely obscene scores against the much weaker other team, compounded by the fact that they were able to use constant airstrikes and there always seemed to be a Chopper in the air.
The whole Airstrike/Chopper dynamic really needs to be toned down. Giving the dominating team a massive advantage over the losing team just doesn't make much sense. You can really put the losing team in such a deep hole that they have no hope of climbing out, and this is the absolute opposite of fun when you get stuck on the losing side.
Just a couple of quick grumbles. I'm still really enjoying it.
I too am waiting for the Eurogamer thing to work. I got the e-mail I'd receive my key soon, but who knows...

I actually think that the Airstrike/Chopper mechanic is really awesome. You can only use those abilities if you go on kill streaks. So you have to kill 7 people in a row without dieing to get a chopper. That's not THAT easy although you can manage to do it pretty often.
Also, choppers can be shot down and Airstrikes are shown on the minimap and 99% of the time when you're in a house, you won't even get scratched.
hey.. hey.. hey... hey.. any you guys europeans? say aloominum. Go on, say aloominum.
Europeans? I thought it was the Americans who say it that way.. By the way, I physically cringed the first time I heard an American say 'Caribbean.'
For the Aussies/New Zealanders, http://www.xbox.com.au/cod4beta to sign up. I've been in for awhile but this is for the other Aussies who weren't so lucky and/or devious.
was in a match with Klyka and some others, and some American dude kept asking us to say 'aloominum'.
And i still haven't had my Eurogamer key, so i don't know what's going on there. Sucks for those waiting on it
So, anyone up for some action? I needs to get a few more levels to get cool new stuff, and since I barely manage to kill anyone I need all the help I can get.
Oh man, I suck so hard at this game. I played for an hour last night and I just made level 4. Also, is there anywhere I can read up on the challenges or whatever? I poked around a little bit last night and I couldn't find anything out about them, just a point in the right direction would be awesome.
I'll be around much later tonight giving out easy kills to anyone who plays with me.
Bah - I applied yesterday for the UK/Europe Beta. I wonder how long I'll have to wait. Do they send you an email or a message over Live?
Use gamespots CoD4 beta link (you get redeem code beta token immidietly, says it will be refiled each day), eurogamers beta-token seems to be missing in action.
Someone mentioned challenges; you need to have rank 4 & it will open up. Basically its to kill & headshot with specific weapons to unlock scope/gripe/camo/etc to that weapon.
The air-support should be limited when its activated on a spawn spot & giving MORE support to the winning team seems odd.
Questions!
Anyone know if shotgun is worth it?
And what button is for using grenade launcher on the assault rifle?
Is the chat proximity based?
Because I only barely hear muffled voices (chat volume is set at 10 in personal preferences) & so far I have not heard anyone say "powned", "noob" or other nonsense that is typical for Live/online fps.
Last: how the hell do I sprint (after choosing the perk of course, or is it just a minor boost)?

I didn't think Sprinting was a perk, you can sprint for a short period of time if you hold down L3 while you're moving. It looked like L3 also holds your breath but I haven't tried that and I would assume that's only when you're zooming in on someone.
The shotgun's pretty cool but it's a very up close and personal touch. Again haven't played for very long. I've got to lvl 4 but I couldn't really see anything mentioning challenges just that I need to complete them for certain weapon upgrades (red dot, scope) to be available to me.
Okay, developing a real love/hate relationship with this game.
I like the gameplay, the graphics are awesome, and the weapons feel good.
The fact that I have to spend a lot of time with weapons I dislike to get to the ones I do like is stupid, and the Airstrike/Chopper thing is making me rethink this game. The fact that only the better players ever get to use them, and that they give their team such a huge advantage, really pisses me off. But then I just got done playing a series of games where two players on the other team where just slicing through everyone, which gave them a constant stream of airstrikes and choppers, which screwed us even more.
And to the inevitable "well just get better', I say yeah right. I only ever gotten to use the Radar once, and I died right after I got it. I manage about a 1:1 kill:death ratio, and the constant dying to choppers combined with the fact that I can't even use an M4 with a red dot (which I managed to pick up off a dead guy and absolutely loved) is really annoying.

Choppers aren't hard to shoot down at all.
And airstrikes are easy as hell to avoid.
But the UAV, I fucking fear the UAV when I don't have my stealth perk on.
sounds like a challenge throwdown to me. Tonight's mission shall be to scupper any incoming helicopters for teams that i'm not on. I expect to fail, but improve.

The only map I die to a chopper (and that dieing is a big MAYBE) is on overgrown if I just so happen to be in the open, which I am usually not.
Airstrikes aren't that bad, especially since there are no "spawn points" per say. You always spawn near your team or at least close to them. Honestly, I am more anxious when I hear "enemy UAV is on air" because they can then see me for 30 seconds on the map (although I make a habit of using UAV jammer on overgrown) than if it says "enemy airstrike" or "chopper". If your entire team empties one clip into the chopper, it goes DOWN. And some people take it down with an rpg.
The "trick" to the game is to make use of your surroundings. Duck, go prone, hide.Honestly, there is no real camping in this game, because it's all viable.
The shotgun in Vacant is awesome, but only in Team Deathmatch. Without respawn, it's far too easy to get caught at range without means to retaliate. The grip for the shotgun is god's gift.
I still prefer my belovd MP5 though.
Even in the case of an airstrike or a chopper, why don't you just run inside under cover? I've never had a problem on any map where I couldn't run to cover -- just pay attention, you get warnings ahead of time when airstrikes and choppers are coming. I only die to an airstrike about one in every 20 times, I'd say.
Also: I'm not gonna say it's easy to get the airstrikes, not at all, but when you DO get one you just feel like that much more of a badass. Also also: If you don't like your weapon, kill someone and then run over and pick up their weapon instead, they probably have a better one if they're a higher rank.

Regarding cover:
The maps are fantasticly build. There is never a moment where you can't find cover or just take a qick sprint into a house to be safe from an attack.
Oh and sprinting: you don't need to hold the left stick down. Just tap it once and you sprint.
I never found choppers to be that big of an issue. Out of all the games I played last night I think I died once to the chopper. Its not hard to avoid when it appears as a big red outline on your map. Just stay in cover when you see it.
What is annoying is having to deal with all the shit weapons when your starting out.
Anyone else underwhelmed with the graphics? Are they even final quality? Everything just looks blurry to me, nothing is sharp...I dunno. It's fun as hell though

Played some more rounds, this time with Jelloblimb and I think they managed to reduce the lag significantly.
If anyone wants to play later, I'll be on in 30 or in an hour. Or just tell me on Ventrilo.
Yah, one of those rounds was real good, ended in 730 vs 750 or thereabout.
Regarding lag I either have no lag at all or its a slideshow with crazy warping back & forth, but so far I have only run into a few matches where I had to disconnect because of lag.

My experience with the FFXII and Bioshock Collector's Editions had me seriously doubting I would buy another Collector's Edition not done by Bungie... and the you have to go and post this, to make me spend yet MORE money this holiday. Bastard!
Seriously though, this sounds really interesting. I just hope their developer commentary isn't as un-fucking-believably boring as Levine's.

I really liked the Final Fantasy XII case and the Bioshock collectors edition was really good especially for the big daddy figure other than it not including the tin case for the game but I don't regret buying either and I don't really understand the problem people have with Collectors Editions especially if you list Bungie as a good one since Halo 2 was easily one of the worst Collectors Editions of all time.
I will probaly get this Collectors Edition, especially with what it includes that's a really cool list of bonuses for COD4.

Halo 2's was fantastic. They included some of the removed cutscenes, talked about why they were changed, had a great behind the scenes look at the development of the game (and the problems as well), and was just in general very entertaining.
FFXII and Bioshock both had exceedingly dull and monotonous behind-the-scenes interviews against drab backgrounds, both of which revealed nothing interesting about the development process whatsoever. Ken Levine had always been very good about plugging his game, and making people excited about it just through the things he would talk about, so I found myself very disappointed with how boring everything he said was.
I've seen the Halo 2 behind-the-scenes video perhaps a half-dozen times. I could just barely sit through Bioshock and FFXII's. They were horrible.

Yes, but... the Big Daddy figure was worth it, for me. Likewise, I'll be picking up the Assassin's Creed CE for the figure, and the AC6 CE for the flight stick and faceplate. CoD4? Not so much, I don't think.
