Me again, with another crazy clearance sale tip off.
Now, this is in no way 100% confirmed, but on a bargains site I frequent, a poster who works at dixons recently posted news of a clearance sale for video games with details along these lines -
"As of this Sunday, Dixons group will be clearing out over 500 videos games to clear out space, they are moving on to next generation consoles. All clearance items are going to be at 97p"
Now, this poster has a good track record, he has tipped me of to a bunch of other Dixons group clearances in the past, there is no reason for me to disbelieve him.
However, this post got taken down by a mod almost imediatly, and any posts in the thread deleted, without a trace. This site has got into some trouble in the past for leaking information about clearance sales before they happen, and it is my belief that the site took this post down, and maybe will allow it back up after the sale has started.
I have no information about what will be in the sale, but my guess is - GBA stuff, PS2 stuff, and any dregs of Gamecube and Xbox stuff. Dixons clearance sales have in the past had Xbox consoles at 97p (although there was like 4 in stock around the country)
I will be going down to my local Currys/Dixons/PC world at opening tomorrow, after checking back on the bargains site, and will post anything I see here. It is possible that this clearance sale might not even go ahead, but best case scenario could be all PS2/GBA games at 97p, hell even PS2/ GB micro consoles at 97p if they really want to clear stock (If I get a PS2 for 97p, it's yours Lave ;-) ).
So, very much YMMV, and maybe nothing will come up, but I have been anticipating a clearance like this for a while.

But I thought Dixons didn't exist anymore and was curry's digital? I'm confused. Where should I pop in tomorrow?
2009 is a year of Updates - one every Monday. Hopefully. xx
Can't do any harm. I can't remember if they list everything on their site (although they do have mostly the same prices instore and online)
Dixons, PC world, Currys Digital.
I think that small high street Dixons have become Currys digital, but the Larger stores haven't changed. Anyway, anything with Currys, Currys Digital, Dixons or PC World above the door are A-Ok.
Worth a shot, I've been meaning to get a PS2, so a chance to build a library at a £1 a pop can't go too wrong.

And yes, delivery is horrific. £5 on a computer, ok, but on a GBA game? Ouch. I get stuff posted from Hong Kong for less than that from eBay.
edit - hah at least some of the clearance games are in-store collection only, so any kind of bulk delivery is out
Virgin is gonna be totally dumping a lot of stuff soon too.
Also - when virgin megastore cleared out their Xbox games, I got about 20 Xbox games for 99p each. I then bought an Xbox ;D
In the morning, of course
Also got some comedy CDs and some neat actions figures.
Oh, and an assload of Anime DVDs (Towards the end of the closing they severely cut prices, like 75% off and such).
God, why can't cool stores go bankrupt more often?
It really does take a good bargain to justify this :P
Another thing I should have said - if you do get any awesome deals, if you take the receipt to another store that will price match, you may (managers discretion) be able to convince them that they should price match what you just bought.
I did this once with Forza, I got it for £1 at Morrisons, then took the game and receipt to comet. I asked if they would pricematch, they said "is it in stock?" I said, "no, not now, but it was 5 minutes ago, I bought the last one", they said "Sorry, it has to be in stock for us to pricematch" so I said "OK, I could go and return this one, then they would have it in stock, then I could come back here, get you to price match, and then go back to morrisons and buy it again, but that would be a stupid amount of hassel. It would be mutch simpler if you pricematch it now" and the manager was quite reasonable, and agreed.
Right, incase anyone else is going for opening, good luck!
I got to my currys at opening, looked at the shelf, and saw no PS2 games at 97p (as I expected, they hadn't re-stickered them) so I asked a random member of staff, I said "I read about a clearance sale of loads of PS2 games being reduced to 97p, but none of them are re-stickered, any ideas?" he went and checked the system, came back and said "Right, the system has just updated this second, with a bunch of games being reduced to 97p" so I said "Ok, which ones?" he replied "there are loads, I can't really tell you all of them, what you can do is grab any that you are interested in of the shelf, and get someone at the till to scan them"
I grabbed 6 games from the shelf, took them to be scanned, and whilst most where not the price the sticker said, none were 97p. The guy then said that it was mostly older games that were reduced, and almost all Xbox games would be 97p. They had 2 Xbox games on the shelf, Timesplitters Future Perfect, and a blank case with "Star Wars" written on it...I asked him to price check Timesplitters, and to check which star wars it was (he was a little baffled when I said there was like 12 Xbox games called star wars) turned out timesplitters was missing the disc, and Star Wars (KOTOR it turned out) was £10.
He said he would go and get the manager, to see if he could help me any more. The manager didn't seem to know the difference between Xbox and Xbox 360 (*smacks forehead*) and said that all I could do is come back on wednesday when they might have restickered everything. He also said that most GBA games would be 97p, but they all had to be taken of the shelf and sorted first, so I couldn't buy any.
So then on to PC world.
Sadly my PC world has a pretty small games section, no GBA/original Xbox games in sight, and the PS2 section is almost entirely chart stuff, nothing at 97p.
So it is very much YMMV, if you know your local store has lots of PS2 games, it sounds like there certainly are clearance lines to be had, but it is mostly on older PS2 games and GBA games.
And bugger if I'm going all the way to Currys in this rain.

Second rule of Teacher Club: You DO NOT touch the kids.
I also hopped into Virgin Megastore, and they had tonnes or older and newer PS2 games, hopefully they will have a clearance sale soon, although given the continued popularity of the PS2, wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't for a while.
