I've watched over a quarter of that list with my father (concentrated towards the top: old movies are our bonding time), but more than half of it in total. I have a very wide ass as a result.

I think something people need to realize is that this list isn't about movie quality. It seems more to be an attempt at an objective list of the most culturally relavent movies, or movies with great social impact. That's why they need to be seen before you die, not because they're great examples of cinema.

What they should do is compile an ever-growing list. Instead of capping it at 1001, they just need to add the appropriate movies at the end of each year. The way it is now, it seems like things would have to be removed for each addition to make room for the latest must-see movies, and that just doesn't seem right. 81's Man of Iron shouldn't have to depose 31's M to be on the list, it should just be added to it, so that that list can grow representatively instead of myopically.. It'd wreak some havoc with completionists, though.

Only movie series with two titles on that list is Godfather. It was conscious decision by editor.

A damn good decision too. The sequels to Star Wars etc are great but perhaps don't deserve that acclaim - Godfather Part II really does.

It was the one that made him a household name, basically.

I don't agree either; Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, Nausicca, any of those are much better.

But only Spirted Away and Princess Mononoke got any kind of mainstream attention(and the latter is pushing it).

I dunno man, I love Porco Rosso more than the next guy, but Spirited Away is just classic.

Also Miyazaki did not direct Whisper of the Heart (even though that one's great).

Am I the only one who feels American Psycho should be on this list

I didn't like Princess Mononoke at all.

Spirited Away was good, but Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausicaa were much better. Howl's Moving Castle I couldn't say, I'd probably put it at the same level as Spirited Away, or maybe a little below.

Totoro I didn't really care for, but I feel that it wasn't really intended to be enjoyed by adults. I'm sure most children would like it.

And those are the only ones I've seen.

Whoever said this list has lots of unknown films is really misinformed of what a unknown film is. The oddest one I caught that I've seen was What Time Is It There? It was one of those movies you're jsut going WTF the entire time. It about this guy who sells watches on the street. He sells a woman going to Paris his fathers watch because she pleads with him for it. He becomes obsessed with her and tries to change the time on every clock in city to Paris time.

Couldn't count but I've probably seem 200 or so.

I gave my brother the 2nd edition of this for Christmas a couple of years back. The last time I updated my list from that edition I was at 146 - that was a year ago.

I know I've caught some more from the list since then, but haven't been keeping track lately. Whenever I'm in a situation to check out more older/foreign movies (lately I have only paid half attention to most of the movies I Netflix) I'll probably work on knocking out some more of the list.

im wary of movie lists that include bad movies just because they have some kind of cultural or historical significance.

in general, movies just dont age well. at all. i just watched mary poppins again recently, which i remember loving. it turned out to be a pretty terrible movie, albeit with great music. there are other shitty old movies that we remember fondly (and might have been great for their time) but in the interest of not stirring up a shit storm, i'll keep my opinions to myself.

So I've seen 290, and bits and pieces of 97 of the list.

Being a screenwriting student certainly helped, but goddamn, I own about 300 DVDs, and only 6 of them are on the list.

Really puts how many movies I've seen into perspective.

I've seen 120 and know of a whole bunch already and just haven't been able to sit down and watch them. I liked the list. Also, star wars is on there all three times. I dissagreed with some of the more recent movies picked (I think they should have stopped 10 years prior) and I think I missed Wizard of Oz. If it's not on there the whole list is for shit.

I loved Totoro, because it reminded me of my childhood growing up in a run down house in the stix.

Maybe it doesn't have that kind of resonance for everyone.

Totoro can melt even the Grinch's heart. If you cannot finish watching the film without having a huge grin on your face you aren't human.

I'm a little miffed they didn't have it on the list, but they do have a couple Studio Ghibli films on there.

Three films I know I'd take off:

Dumbo and Pinnochio - Why these two specifically? Snow White was the first feature-length animated film, but it was also really good quality overall. I don't know why those two other Disney films are on that list, and that I can't think of any justifiable reason is enough for me to question their placement.

The Wolf Man - God, what a crappy film. People watch it now and would say "Well of course it's cheesy now", but holy god people, it's worse than that. It's really just a terrible film all around, and if it weren't the first werewolf film made I know it wouldn't be on the list at all.

(Before anyone says anything: I consider the Universal Dracula and Frankenstein both good films.)

I've only seen about 155 or so. That's kind of sad, considering that I'm at least pretty sure that I've seen a lot of films. Then again, some of my favorite films of all time weren't on that list.

Someone mentioned above that there seems to be a lot more crammed on from the early part of the last century, while providing less space for the super awesome films of the last 30 years. But really, the first five decades or so of film only take up about half of the list (while, again, skipping a lot of my faves), but the last 500 are all from the 70's on. So I'd say it's pretty fair, if not a bit biased in favor of recent films.
