I've seen every film after I was born and all but two from before WWII. That's a good 40-60 percent of the list.

Apparently I haven't watched enough movies from the 50's-70's.

Also am I missing it or is Blues Brothers NOT on the list? I said Wow. Finest piece of American cinema, rejected!

They do have a decent enough mix of popcorn, high cinema, and foreign works even though this is obviously targeted at us proud film loving Americans.

I've seen about a hundred, starting at All Quiet on the Western Front (#51) and ending with The Constant Gardner (#1001) . . . hard to say for some because you've seen them in parts several times or you can't really remember too well. I could probably double it with a more liberal approach.

How perfect is the timing of this? I came to PA specifically to find the "Movies That are Old" thread to figure out what else to add to my netflix queue. Now I have some things to consider (after being drastically disappointed that "Grave of the Fireflies" is some anime).

I think they basically picked the gold standard of anime in this list, though I do understand some people just plain don't like it.

I'm amazed that they put multiple Micheal Moore films on here. Roger and Me was a monumental achievement in documentaries but I dunno about the rest of his body of work...

The reasoning behind some of his Documentaries is probably the same reason behind a lot of the films on that list.

Looking at something like Journey to the Moon, The Jazz Singer, or Wild Strawberries, they're not particular good, but they are important films in terms of construction, genre, or breaking new ground.

Right now, a political documentary that outright calls out the PotUS, that's ballsy and, as such, kind of a big deal from a filmmaking standpoint. Over time they're likely to drop from the list, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be seen.

I short: Being on the list is not necessarily a mark of quality.

Regarding titles not on the list that should be, the biggest two I can think of are Il Conformista, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

I've seen 181, and I'm 20 years old. I've seen very few of the much older movies, a lot of the list comes from just the past twenty or thirty years...I dunno, there are a lot of old movies I want to see, they're just very unavaiable or hard to come by.

Meshes in the Afternoon wasn't all that great. It's pretty standard college art film. It was probably groundbreaking for it's time, but it isn't really anything special now, if you ask me.

Also, Puppetmaster and Moulin Rouge? Seriously?

If you do end up watching it, don't watch the dub. Just saying, I saw it in English and absolutely hated the movie. I'm not one of those losers who insist on watching everything in it's native language or whatever, but I literally wanted the characters to die because of how annoying their voices were.

GotF is in the same vein of the other two you mentioned, though. So, whatever.

I've seen 101 movies on that list.

And where the fuck is Ronin?!?!

Perhaps it made the "top movie car chases ever" list.

I'm scannin the list and disagreeing with quite a few, but man I've seen a lot of these. Didn't think I would have.

Actually they are making a live action version in Japan right now. Not sure when the actual release date is but I'd say sometime in July. When, or if, it gets released in North America I wouldn't have the slightest clue.

Pretty good list, though needs to be updated to include the past few years. I would say The Departed, There Will Be Blood, and No Country for Old Men easily deserve spots.

As for me, I counted 106 that I've seen fully. I didn't count ones that I've seen partially (otherwise I would have been well above 200, lol) but I'm pretty happy with the number. Really makes me realize how many great movies I know I should have seen by now but haven't.

Wow, those additions alone bring my number up at least 20.

Some are a little questionable though. The Prestige? United 93?

Overall a pretty damn good, comprehensive list. This may make things easier for a little project I have in the making with one of my best friends. We're big movie buffs and have been making a list of our own for a while now - between the two of us we more or less want to have seen every movie ever.

but can't for the life of me understand how anyone can rate

    The Constant Gardener (2005)

Edit: vis the 2k5 shakeup. Looks like AVLE got dropped a year later.

I'm a bit disappointed that they dropped Fellowship of the Ring. That was the only one really worth watching.

I also suspect Crash will be one of those additions that is dropped a year or two after its entry.

True. It is funny they dropped the best of the three. Although I think LOTR is really just one long movie. Didn't they shoot it all at once and then just cut it up into 3 bite sized chunks?

Edit: pushing the definition of "bite sized" but you get what I mean. Although the third seemed pretty interminable.

I'm sure they knew exactly where each one would start and stop for the most part. Although the principal photography was done simultaneously for all three films (for location and actor convenience), you're probably thinking of the books. That was one big narrative that got cut up due to pricing and post-war paper shortages.

The Departed was just a bigger budget version of Infernal Affairs with plenty of recognisable Hollywood A-listers. Novel and derivative, frankly you can only put it in there if you include its forebear.

They were certainly three separate movies but the story really required one to watch all three. If there had been no book preceding LOTR, people would have been WTFing all over the place. The reason they didn't is because they knew there was more to come.

The Departed deserves to be on the list for being a Hollywood remake thats better then the original. I can't think of a single other example.

Huh. I've seen 66 of them, which is more than I thought I'd have. I can't say I watch too many movies these days, and when I do it's mostly just action/comedy. I was going to make a crack about not having enough time to waste watching 1001 movies, but considering how much time I spend surfing the web... :|
