Vista keeps stealing my HDD space

So I got a new laptop, and it's running Vista. I didn't really care one way or the other.
For no reason, the free space on my HDD just decreased by 6 GB. I didn't install, upload, or download anything. I checked disc cleanup, and there's nothing significant there. The space allocated for backups is shown as a separate drive, so I doubt it's that either.
What could cause 6 GB to just dissapear (or more accurately, display as used)? It's really pissing me off.

It made a restore point, probably.

    Turn system restore off?

Oddly enough every once in awhile my drive with Vista on it will have more space than the night before.

    Deja vu indeed.

Malkor: I get the same thing. It's nice to wake up in the morning, dreading the backup spree after seeing little hard drive space the night before, but suddenly having no need to. Procrastination wins again!

Hopefully that's all this is then.
Yes, I had a similar post a few days ago. It was a different cause that time though.

    Use Spacemonger.

Let's you know where everything is, how much space it takes up, and looks pretty cool to boot. Great for finding big chunks of temp files that windows sometimes forgets to delete.

GAH, another 5 gigs is gone! I'm seriously getting concerned.

Edit: So you guys were definitely 100% right about it being restore points. I turned off system restore (took me a while because I wasn't sure if I should) and my drive space shot up by 15gb.

In Windows XP, Recycle Bin defaults to 10% of your HD space. I'm sure that carried over to Vista, right click on recycle bin and check the settings.

I seem to be missing 60 gigs in Vista for some reason.

    Spacemonger tells me nothing.

EDIT: Holy fucking shit! 74GBs for system restore? Really!? Is that really fucking necessary!?

Jesus, from having 597GBs free out of 698GB, after disabling System Restore and enabling it again, I'm now at 671GBs free out of 698GBs. Sweet fancy Jenkins...
