PS3 Goes DVR via PlayTV
Posted August 22, 2007 by Josh

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced PlayTV, a device that, when coupled with a PS3, turns the machine into a full digital video recorder (DVR). The device, which currently doesn't have a price or release date, will feature two high definition TV tuners that will allow users to record and/or watch two separate HD video streams on their PS3s.

The add-on will of course make use of the PSP connectivity by allowing users to record HD or SD shows on their PS3s, and then watch them on their PSPs. And because PlayTV is part of the PlayStation 3 family, it will be fully upgradeable with new features through PlayStation Network.

The best high definition media device just got better.

While I'm personally an HD DVD supporter, this is good news for PS3/PSP owners and Blu-Ray fans in general.

I record everything at home on my PVR box. Everything. If I'm reading this announcement right I'd be able to use a PS3 to do the same thing as the PVR box I rent from the cable company?

So, it has 2 tuners.. but does it have component/hdmi/dvi inputs?

At home, here, I have HDTV cable. But the cable has to output to the TV. To make use of the PS3 for my HDTV needs, it'd have to have inputs..

I wouldn't just want to use the PlayTV just for OTA hdtv.

Anyway, I think it's a great, neat little thing for the PS3, and I'd probably get one if I had a PS3 and also did not have my Media PC.

Pretty cool...I really am interested in a PS3, problem is, $500+ is a lot of money for an entertainment only machine no matter how good the value is. One day, perhaps.

Haha, this quote from that article's comments section made me laugh. It's video game system wars... applied to movie studios.

So how TV providers going to activate this so it can decode digital channels? All it says is that it features 2 HD tuners. Will it utilize cable cards?
