I just feel that whomever runs Ea's online division needs to be taken off to the side and have a long talk about what they did in the past is going to come back to haunt them if they play the same strategies.
I do want to try Warhammer out but as time goes on I shift my focus to 40K and hope it's not a FPS.
I have talked with people I work with who kind of passed on thinking about Warhammer because of the beta retool among other reasons.
I thought the beta break was a good thing? Because, you know, it means they're actually trying to make the game fun, and not rushing it out prematurely?

When I brought up they took it down because I heard that the gear sucked but looked pretty they changed the conversation to Conan. A few days later I brought it up again and for the most part they felt that they should have thought of that in the first place, That sure the game looks nice but is it going to be worth it for anyone to play? {The Raid vs Casual debate I so hate}
It's basically a race this year to see if they bring it out before WotLK, Conan and so on.
What people consider fun varies person to person
Like I said I want to try it out but as time goes on it's going to be something I pass on
The mixed opinions they have about Talba Rusa are something that even that thread here cannot cover
This game is being made by EA Mythic, the team that brought you Dark Age of Camelot. For as far as I know the people who made Sims Online and Earth&Beyond have nothing to do with all this.
As much as I hate EA and I want to rip on them right now till the sun goes down and maybe spwan another Khorne Berzerker with my rage, I have to agree to Aldo.
EA Online fagmoles have been hands off. EA understands something, they suck monkey wang when it comes to making something semi original. They cannot ever make their own MMO because they have no many yes men who don't give a flying fuck about quality or fun. Mythic on the other hand has been developing Warhammer Online before EA ever stepped into the picture. Unfortionaly for Mythic they found that Games Workshop's game and ideas were fantastic, and grand. Mythic had budget limitations which can lead to a scary future. Enter EA. EA is rich, EA desperately wants into the MMO market before WoW lowers the brain cell count of MMO'ers below that of a chimp. EA surveys the field and see's Mythic looking at their wallets with a frown. EA says: "Hay guys, you're pretty good at making MMO's no? So how about we buy your company. Because Games Workshop are smart bastards and have their talons sharpened and set to law suit we will not fuck up your game. Instead you will become EA Mythic, your wallet will be 9 digits larger and we wont restructure your company and move you to the cubical pen in Cali and we wont force EA yes men into your offices in Virginia. In turn you can make your game, have 6 races to start, start designing two or four expansions, one of which will be fully tailored to Skaven which remind us of our rat like selfs. Win Win. We get a MMO division, you get nigh limitless design money."
So you see? EA isn't sticking their dicks into the game less Games Workshop chops them off.
Take your apathy and your high elf avatar get the hell out of my thread or I swear to Tzeentch I will hide warp stone under your skin when you sleep and let loose a pack of Skaven led by Morskittar.
I wonder what will happen to Mythic once they're done with WAR and its expansions, though. Hopefully the games industry has changed dramatically by then.

They're still under the rule of EA. If Oddjob is right and the only reason they're not being fucked is because of the Games Workshop then that might change once WAR is over.

But that'll be years from now, of course.
Well I hope I am not right, but this is EA we're talking about. They don't work with a company they've bought, they rape it and ship it to Cali so they can absorb them.
My personal opinion is that the only reason Mythic can still go on is because Games Workshop must have Caveats built into the IP license agreement.

and don't forget about Ultima online X or what ever that was supposed to be a f ully 3d mmo, with a giant hamster as a race etc. Ea is known for shutting Mmo's down even if there are a couple thousand people still playing. And since this game is being backed by GW, i don't think they will drop it like they did the first incarnation of warhammer. wich was going to be closer to the rpg then the tabletop.

More like round 4. Motor City Online was before EnB.

Give me a break, is it so impossible to believe that EA realizes that the game needs to do well to make them money, and they're taking a hands-off approach because they know Mythic knows how to make a successful MMO?
If WAR is a success, that's all the more reason for the same business relationship to continue into Mythic's next MMO. You might as well say that Activision is going to come in and take control of Blizzard when they move on to World of Starcraft.
essentialy from what Im to understand the Ea / mythic merger was that mythic would handle the mmo games and ea the other console games etc. Cause if I rember correctly Mythic fixed / cleaned up Ultima Online with the graphic overhaul.

I think people should shut the fuck up about the EA thing; worrying about it is retarded. With the caveat that they get to give a giant "told you so, bitches" if it goes downhill.

The gear is supposed to be kinda sucky, this is not going to be a gear oriented game. You are not going to raid the same dungeon twice a week hoping for some rare drop.
Ideally, you will hit dungeons until you hit level cap. You may do some extra dungeons or raids for some Tome of Knowledge unlock credits to get some unique tactics.
Once your at level cap, chances are crafters will be able to make everything you need to wear or use for PvP, and they will be able to do this without spending 3 months collecting world drops and instead just purchasing materials from a vendor.
Then you PvP like a madman, and when you get sick of PvP, you level up an alt for new variations of PvP. Then you PvP some more.
They've said that you'll be able to get decent pvp gear through pvp/pve or other means quite easily. However, there will still be top tier armors and items available that'll give you an edge in PvP, and they'll be quite hard to obtain.
The city siege awards for example. Lairs and raids as well will give you the loot you need to chop your enemies to bits, and I suspect they'll work much like in other mmo's.
I hope they do it the EVE way, where the best gear is only slightly better than the tier beneath it, but hard to get and sought after by everyone anyway.

I hope they don't do something like WOW and LOTR raids
I know part of the history of Warhammer is chaos bulldozering down an empire or kislev city with an army of thousands
But it would be kind of fun to be a various party to burn down a farm town
I highly suspect they've learned a lesson from WoW. No one naturally gathers to do social activities in groups of 40. If the raids require more than 20 people, I'd be very surprised.
Also, I am so ready to start beta testing. So ready it hurts.
Also, I am so ready to start beta testing. So ready it hurts.
I've been putting off my WoW-playing friends at work with the "beta should be starting soon" for six or seven months now. It's wearing a bit thin.
We won't get into how long some of us have been patiently waiting with our newly built multi thousand dollar PC's for a chance to get some elbow grease testing in on the game.
Any the who, to ramp up my Warhammerness I picked up OrcSlayer and GiantSlayer (Not part of an omnibus). I remember I won an Alliance Champion content at WarAlliance awhile back, I think it was both books but I uh, cant seem to find them. I don't think I read the second Omnibus either cause the book descriptions don't stir my memories. The last thing I remember was the trip into the Wastes to the dwarf fort on the air ship. Bah I either find the second omnibus or I buy it, either way I'll read that too to get my Warhammery blood flowing.
I'm buying a new PC pretty soon, and one of my primary interests is WAR, but I'm not spending more than a thousand cold ones for it. Is this going to bite me in the ass?

You can easily get buy on a new tower with that money. As long as you buy it/build it custom, and don't have to pay for a decent monitor or even an OS, you'll be in the clear.
My PC upgrade cycle is based on WAR. I'm going to get a mostly-new machine about when the game goes gold.
Oddjob, if I remember correctly, you're describing Daemonslayer, though they may have started the trip earlier. I'm pretty sure it's the last book in the first Omnibus.

That's the smartest way to go, if WAR (or any other pre-release game) is your major reason for upgrading. By the time WAR comes out, there'll probably be a new set of graphics cards out. The longer you wait, the more performance you get for less money.
I know people that spent a fortune upgrading just to try to get into the early Vanguard beta, and it ended up being a terrible waste.
I'm looking forward to reading about how much progress Mythic's made. Last I heard, Age of Conan wasn't going so well, so WAR may be our only shot at the Next Big Thing any time soon.

Just to post on the topic of gear for WAR, if they put a system in that is anything like DAOC I’d be more then happy.
This post pertains to DAOC (classic) servers, ToA is a completely different story.
For those of you who haven’t played DAOC, or never leveled a character to 50 for endgame RvR (back in the day, the grind to 50 was almost unbearable) the loot system is very fair IMO.
Things have changed a bit since I last played but generally if you wanted to template yourself out for a “perfect†RvR build it would look something like 1-2 epic armor pieces (obtained by quest chain that is mostly soloable with minor grouping required at the later stages), 2-5 Crafted armor pieces, depending on the quality you’re looking for and the amount of Spellcrafting (similar to enchanting/jewel crafting but more complex) armor could cost you several plat per piece (generally it’s not overly hard to farm money) and for the rest of the template you would get dungeon loot. However in DAOC almost all things can be done with a group of normal players.
Before their newest xpac most of the extra dungeon items were from a place called darkspire which only required a group and could generally be run in 1hourish. In addition almost all items are non-bind so you could buy most of what you need (at an expensive price).
The beauty of DAOC though is that if you get the epic quest armor and the champion weapon you are a formidable foe in RVR. Now is that full templated higher realm rank guy going to beat you in a 1v1? Generally yes but you can still hold your own.

As long as it doesn't turn into WoW's "I just got ass-raped in one shot by some fucking Sulfuras-wielding Paladin with goddamn armor I'll never, ever obtain because I sleep and eat and do other stuff", I'm happy.
Kickass unobtainable gear? Fine, whatever. As long as I have a chance of outsmarting them and winning once in a while.
One little gobbo stands in the path of a dwarf outfitted in the most epic of epicly epic gear. He gets clobbered. In the meantime, 40 other Greenskins jump out and Waaagh! his ass back to Karak a Ur Momma's House.
