Well as someone who went to E3 the last two years before it toned down, I will say bigger really always isn't better in some cases and with E3 it wasn't for the better. Alot of people took advantage of the system and made lines longer for (some) media, and retailer outlets.
It was fun, but sadly I think it became more of a circus, and less of what E3 was really suppose to be about.
As for PAX? I wouldn't say it is a poormans E3. This is different then E3. This is a event for gamers, and many other things to meet and greet with new people and with their friends to have a good time. IMO PAX has more of a nicer crowd of people then E3 had.
I don't think they will sell out, I mean they are expecting 30,000 people to this event. Most already pre reg. So I don't think there will be 9,000 waiting in line a few hrs before opening. I think you will be fine.
PAX is not the new E3. E3 failed. If someone else wants to be the new E3 they are welcome to it. They can even set up shop in the carcass of the giant and claim his power, but E3 is dead and it died for a reason. If I were them I wouldn't be in such a hurry to stuff myself in that coffin, and I certainly wouldn't boast about it.

Also a valid point.
