There's never any point to giving business to the 'Stop unless you're looking for a used game.
Chances are your local bigbox has what you're looking for at the same/cheaper price. And you don't get dogpiled to preorder a bunch of shit you don't want to.
and chances are that is inconvenient for a great many people who choose to do business with Gamestop?
sorry, I'll stop there at my way home from work and pick up my guaranteed copy, thank you. I'm not going to drive all over town looking for it.
It doesn't bother me in the least.
While the unwashed masses are scouring Gamestop for the latest releases, I'm waltzing in and out of target with whatever I want in record time. And without hassle from the employees.
I'll have my game a week earlier then you with more choices since Target carries maybe 50% what EB does. And I've never been hassled.
How are you getting things a week ahead of the street date from EB? I am constantly trying to get things ahead of time and it never works.
I also fail to believe that you've made it through the gauntlet of 'Stop without the hassle of 'DO YA WANT TO PREORDER TONY HAWK HORSE ADVENTURES??' or 'DO YA WANT AN EB CARD AND OUR NEWSLETTER??'.
Furthermore, a selection of games is meaningless to me, as I tend to have my mind made up as to what I want before I go to the store. When I go into a store I don't want to be offered additional products and services unrelated to my purchase, because I know what I want. I'm certainly not going to pre-order anything when I know I can get it with little to no problems on the release day anywhere else, as is the case with most consumer products.
t angrylinuxgeek: I read you post several times (to try to make sense of it). Better question is, did you read mine, as I never mentioned driving all over town to get something. My point was if you go to a more obscure place to purchase your games, you'll have no problem getting them exactly what you want when you want it, without having to make an appointment ahead of time. Hope this clarifies things for you.
Having to pre-order your games is total bullshit. Games aren't a specialty commodity anymore, given their massive audience, and thus should be handled in an appropriate manner. Could you imagine if Best Buy started forcing pre-orders for DVDs and refusing to sell you any if you hadn't? They'd be out of business in half a minute.

This is just plain stupid. You don't want to have more choices? That's ridiculous. By your butt logic, Target is giving you WAY more products and services simply based on the fact they have other departments besides video games.

You don't HAVE to pro-order them. I've never not found a game at EB if I hadn't preordered the day of release. I only throw 5$ down on the ones I really really want.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys are just really socially awkward and confuse chat with abuse. I've never been to a Gamestop {from Arizona, to California, to the two near where I live now in Washington} where they list me off 10 games I should preorder, or hassle me with a ton of other sales pitches. They make chat about new and upcoming games, or recently showed off games, which I prefer over silent register operators. The never ask me if I want to preorder unless it's big name game coming out for the system I'm buying games for, or games that they know I would be interested in, and it's not that hard to say yes or no. A human touch isn't really isn't a bad thing. Hell, every time I've been in a hurry I've been able to get in and out easily without all that oh so troublesome walking to the other corner of the store to reach the electronics.

Here's the thing: when it comes to Gamestop, it's very much YMMV.
Some Gamestops are wonderful, with pre-order/extra crap hassling at a minimum, plentiful pre-order swag, games available the day they come out, etc.
And some Gamestops are pits of hell where you have to endure countless sales pitches, pre-orders vanish, employees will literally refuse to sell you a game on its release date even if they have extras in stock in a desperate attempt to push up pre-orders, since pre-orders are the main estimation of an employee's worth in the eyes of corporate, etc.
It's all a crapshoot. I thought Gamestop was fine (pricing aside) because I shopped at one of the good ones.
Then I went to a pit of hell Gamestop. What a world of difference.
When I went to buy MP3 yesterday, I got the last one at my local Best Buy... and the Target nearby wasn't selling until Wednesday (for whatever reason). I think next time I'll just pre-order and save myself the hassle of trying to figure out where I can find it, since I always have to go after work.
Everytime I pre-order it's been because I walked in planning to - I actually don't remember ever being asked to pre-order something the past few times I've been in a Gamestop.

You said driving all over town "doesn't bother you in the least." I don't know where you live. In college, I lived in a relatively small town, so sure, I could get a game at a department store. I now live in a major city where it is hard to find games because there are so many shoppers.
What exactly bothers you so much about it? They're not charging you more for it.
Let me preface this with saying I don't care for the hassle of shopping at an EBstop. However I worked at a Gamecrazy for about a year and I understand why they shove crap down your throat.
The problem is that if employees do not perform up to corporate standards, then usually they're kinda ushered out. You know the drill, cut your hours until you basically have 5 hours or so a week, passive-aggressive crap so you quit instead of get fired. You have to sell X number of discount cards and X number of preorders in a certain time frame or else you're in trouble.
Now what it sounds like is that the employees you guys are getting don't know how to "read" their customers that come up to the register. Preordering and discount cards can sound like a bunch of crap to heavy gamers but parents are an entirely different issue. Working at gamecrazy I was actually able to hit number one in the entire company on preorders for a month by using scare tactics on parents prior to the christmas season. Parents dont want to hassle with the big stores to see if they have it since they really just want to pick up their fucking game for little timmy and call it a day. They also buy the MVP card because it has a magazine and their kid doesnt read enough and they can save money on games etc. etc. Yeah its kinda a bunch of crap but it was my job and at least Gamecrazy prices were a bit cheaper than EBstop.
So parents and really average type people are likely receptive to this sort of selling technique. What they need to realize is that gamers are a completely different sort of lot. You basically have to befriend them and talk games with them for a while before they want to buy anything from you. When they become your friends then its like, preorders and crap out the ass because really, thats why gamers shop at a, you know, gaming store. They come in, not unlike a man in a red light district, looking for a "personal" shopping experience. I am of the belief that gamestore employees are there to recommend games, discuss gaming, and basically be the "business friend" of the hardcore gamer. I mean why else would you shop there? When I worked at gamecrazy, some people shopped there because I worked there. I was a gamer's whore.
And why not? Sometimes gamers just want to stand around and argue about stuff. Its easy enough to do since most work at the store can be done at the same time as talking to other people.
I dunno, I just think a lot of these apathetic asshole employees probably need to reevaluate why they're doing what they're doing.
God, this debate has dropped to level of inane, meaningless crap that's pathetic even for an argument on a gaming forum.
'Waaa, people ask me to reserve things!'
'Waaaa, I have to walk across the store to pick up a game at Target!'
'Waaa, the register monkeys of a large corporation aren't totally honest!'
'Waaaa, I have a pick up a phone to see if Best Buy has a copy of Major Release #2!'
'Some EB Games empoyees have poor personal hygene!'
What's next, complaining that the lighting in EB Games makes you look fat and pasty, or that you're allergic to salsa and the presense of a Taco Bell in your local Target makes buying games there a life threatening ordeal?
I find many things about GameStop's business model annoying, and I complain about them and avoid the store, but Jesus. How much lower can we go?

Because that's exactly what the other side of this whole "debate" sounds like.
Like...if you work for McDonald's, you might get offended by an anecdote in which someone was poisoned by McDonald's food.
Didnt read thread but gamestop charges MSRP for games, if the game is a big release you will likely see a $10 discount on release day (well i know Frys or cc/bb will do it), so buying a game there is worthless unless youre looking for a midnight release.

Unfortunately, every GameStop I have been to (from a few in Louisiana to many in Georgia) has been that way. I walk in and am bombarded by requests to buy magazine subscriptions, preorder big upcoming games, and then get offered "new" copies of the game that they unboxed for employee rentals. It drives me crazy. I've only shopped there when I had a game I really don't like I was using as a trade in.

I'm almost certain my gamestop looks at the person. They almost never ask me anything. They just quickly finish the transactions. But I've seen them try to push on all sorts of stuff on other people as well.
I have a hard time believing this. What games are people pre-ordering in droves, and then not actually buying at all afterward. Seriously, you only honor pre-orders for the first 48 hours (yes, I understand the customer keeps the store credit) ... it's not like the game has dropped in price by then. I find it hard to believe that you would have a hard time selling more than 5 or 10 copies of a brand-new game.
Here is what you're missing: They can't sell 5 to 10 more copies than they thought they would sell. They already try and get as many copies as they think they can sell so when they order one just for you that's likely an extra copy.
(snip)
But over the course of several months, they can't sell 5 copies of a game that (apparently) had enough popularity to get that many pre-orders?
We still have about 10 copies of Madden that weren't picked up. Those new copies probably won't sell now since the Madden craze is over. We still have copies of Madden 06. Those games sell huge amounts within the first couple days, but unless there is some kind of shortage, it usually doesn't last the week and then we are stuck with a bunch of overstock.
Aside from PC games, most games are on the shelves more than a year before they undergo a price drop.
This varies widely on the publishing company, but most games almost always receive one or two price drops before they've been out a year. Madden will be 30 dollars or less by Christmas.
Madden may not be the best example for this counter-argument. I would figure sports games in general are 'release week' stuff that sells up front and then very slowly afterward. A triple-A title such as GTA or Halo or BioShock probably sells fairly consistantly for a longer period.
God, this debate has dropped to level of inane, meaningless crap that's pathetic even for an argument on a gaming forum.

I think the main issue is that many people feel that buying a game shouldn't be a hassle. In fact, I think hardcore gamers believe that they deserve a bonus for leaving the comfort of their homes to spend money and deal with people. They walk in expecting to get a high five for their excellent taste in video games, and instead they get badgered for pre-orders.
My worst Gamestop experience was probably when an employee started arguing with me about pre-ordering Oblivion. That or the first time I bought a new game from there, only to find it gutted. Then they put fucking stickers on it that left shit all over where they were.
Best was picking up RE4 Wii. They had enough, they casually asked me if I was interested in pre-ordering Umbrella Chronicles (Makes since with the game I am purchasing), I said no thanks, I left.
I should have thanked the guy for not being a douche. That is the way things should go.
