The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
We've been told that registration for the tournament is closed and we're on a waiting list of some kind, yet the tournament rules clearly state that registration is restricted until the day of the event. What's up?
I thought this was bullshit as well. I thought the rule was there to allow players that wanted to play in the tournament the opportunity to not have to register on the first day. From what I can tell Saturday was a lot more packed than friday so it's obvious to me that rules like that should be enforced to protect people who have work and did not plan on attending PAX everyday.
FragD? We were the team that lost to you in round 2. It's cool man, you guys were really good. I just wish that the tournaments were still casual-gamer friendly like they used to be at every other PAX. I feel like there were pro teams in most all the PC tournaments (and I have heard the same for the consoles, but I wasn't there to watch).

Yeah. I don't know, you can't really expect a tournament with SUCH a huge prize pool to not attract pros. For what it's worth, you guys were definitely the second best team we played, behind 20ID -- y'all would definitely have won 3rd / 4th if you hadn't been seeded where you were. Just luck of the draw, sadly. :x

Right. That luck seems to always be against me, which is why I propose that the luck element be removed from it in the years to come, and a seeding process be introduced.
But thank you for your compliments. We had actually been playing since beta and really did want to win at least a 3rd/4th. We thought with our practice we had a chance to place top 4 ><
I really hate it when teams that deserve to place in the top, get eliminated by the number 1 and 2 teams in the beginning. Something needs to really be done to address this next year. Please.

Agreed. You guys definitely deserved 3rd or 4th.
EDIT: We did manage to get put in opposite brackets from the 20ID team at the beginning, which I really do think was for the best, as it would really have sucked to run up against them in the first round as we originally were going to, but more seeding than that would have been a good idea.
The problem is, how do you determine what teams get seeded where? It's in everyone's advantage to have 3rd or 4th seed just to stay away from 1st and 2nd, but how is it determined without a preseason of some kind?
The only teams that were seeded were the two teams that traveled to the event just for this tournament. No one knew of them, or if they were good gamers (although 20ID won a goofy BF2 tourney for a massive cash prize a while back), just that they were serious enough to travel to play an unreleased RTS for a lot of money against minimal competition, so it was assumed they wouldn't be bad.
I'm sure 3rd and 4th place spots would have been slightly different with perfect seeding, but given so little information about the participants, and the game itself being crummy for competitive play makes the outcome of the tourney somewhat random.
I did like how the WiC has dedicated servers and the strategy/whiteboard feature was cool, but the game itself didn't feel like there was enough to it to really stand a chance against Starcraft/Warcraft's balance of micro and macromanagement to get picked up for serious play.

The other option is to have the tournament be double-elimination with a losers bracket. Typically I have seen better final rounds come out of that. There is still a chance to have the 2nd place team beat out the deserving 3rd of 4th early in the losers bracket, but that chance is a lot less IMO.
The problem is how long it takes to run a tournament like this. I really want to see improvements to seperate the pros from the casuals next year. It's nice to have tournaments where casual guys with some good practice under their belt can win something. This isn't CPL, and should not be treated as such. This is a social event.

What makes the game crummy for competitive play?
