    So. Scary.

    See what I did there?

What I loved about SH3 was the father-daughter relationship being played up. I think it's something that's important in the series because of how Silent Hill came to be anyway, and when elements of it sneak into SH4, I feel that game becomes relatively better. I don't necessarily miss it in SH2 because it was just awesome by itself. Maybe I'm interested in the interpersonal stories of the Silent Hill series, which would explain why some feel SH4 is so hollow at times.

What was good about SH3 is that even though Harry was killed off camera, he did such a good job raising her that she grew up to love him and reject everything about Silent Hill. So what he went through in the first game wasn't a waste.

Yeah, and even though the voice-acting/scripting/translation wasn't spot-on all the time, I still felt for Heather. At the very end:
when she starts kicking the god repeatedly, I felt so vindicated for her.

I went to college in a town that had The Siren used as a county fire whistle. Well, I didn't know that and the first fire that broke out when I was on campus happened to be a damp, foggy Eastern Shore early-morning panic attack as I walked alone.

    Bastard.

I did like that relationship too. Whatever else I could say about the game, Heather was a really neat character.

I especially like how her tits weren't falling all over the place. That's my big problem with the Fatal Frames; why are you going to fight ghosts in skin tight negligee?

Ignoring the background, as it is prerendered, the graphics in remake were really not so hot. im not gonna spend time digging up a bad screenshot though, but it could be done.

Yeah, I saw a few of those. But, seeing as Heather has, shall we say, such handsome features for a lass it doesn't really make her sexy as much as bizarre.

So what? If we're discussing the graphics, any "trick" they might use for them is fair game. So the backgrounds are pre-rendered; that doesn't prevent them from being beautiful. You might as well disqualify Gears of War for using blooming or Okami for using cel-shading. Besides, the backgrounds are animated AND dynamic light sources, AND they have reflective surfaces and the water will ripple when you walk in it. That's impressive, especially for a 2002 game.

The characters and enemies looked awesome, but people saying it "doesn't count" because the entire power of the GC was pulled into rendering no more than 5 guys on screen at once and nothing else pisses me off. Yes, nowadays we have games that look just as good if not better and it's all real-time, but the REmake (and Zero) looked and still look completely amazing, no matter how many crossed fingers Capcom had behind their backs.

Okay, okay, okay. His original point is, even if the RE series had good graphics to begin with, RE5 is such a leap ahead that it's noticeable, and that it's comparable to what's happening with SH.

James' psychosis is usually referenced as sexual in nature for a few reasons. The most obvious example is Maria.
Maria may have been what James wanted Mary to be in her last days, or at the very least she was the exact opposite of the person that James killed. Mary being sick effectively ended James' life on many levels, even physical ones.

And the nurses aren't the only sexualized enemies. The mannequins are pretty obvious in that regard, especially with Pyramid Head raping two of them while James watches in horror...

    Yup.
James killed Mary out of sexual frustration - being sick, she couldn't satisfy his urges, and it eventually built up inside James so much that he killed her out of frustrated rage. Hence the guilt, which is put in his face by Pyramid Head representing his animalistic urges while simultaneously being his sense of guilt, what with hunting James down and trying to punish him and everything.

Have you seen any other Japanese horror from the 50 or 60s periods, before it became heavily influenced by western horror?

It's one of the best looking games on the PS2 ever, and it was released in like the halfway point of the systems lifecycle.

Well, that, and the story was heavy and dull and the environments were uninspired and tedious. And it was about as frightening as an angry moth.

Wasn't SH3 the one with the mirror that freezes your image then starts bleeding, then the room starts bleeding and killing you? And that fucking haunted mansion? Not scary my ass.

And they are such great sections.

I always thought it was a mix of things. Pity was one of them, and even sex possibly, but I always took it as he killed her out of overall frustration from her illness. His entire life taken up by taking care of his wife, someone who he was really coming to resent because of her inability to take care of herself, which in turn was pretty much making sure he couldn't live his life in any way.

    Thats not all entirely correct.
He was sexually frustrated but it was part of the problem not the whole. Her illness confined her to hospitals or to her bed, because she was sick, James had to put his own life on hold and he grew to resent her for it, even if he loved her. He killed her by making himself believe it was to put her out of her misery, which it did because she saw how sad he was and was sad for being the cause. But he really did it out of selfish desire to be free of her and her illness. Sexual frustration was just a part. Maria was outgoing, sexual and everything James wanted from his woman instead of ill and bed ridden.

    My interpretation is that
Mary did initially want James to help her die, but changed her mind at the last moment. James still resented her and secretly wanted her to die, so he killed her, blamed both of them, and tried to forget what he'd done.

The sexual aspect of the nurses is pretty basic: while James was sexually frustrated while Mary was sick, he was more attracted to the hospital's nurses than his own dying wife. The mannequins are more representative of Mary's sexual side while she was physically helpless - hence the Pyramid Head rape scene, with PH ultimately being James's own avatar in Silent Hill's otherworld.

Arguably, Silent Hill 2 has a couple of pretty deep father-daughter relationship themes running in it, too. I think the father-daughter relationship is one of the greatest for drawing forth emotions, because it often can run the gamut from the absolutely horrible and traumatic(Angela and her father) to extremely protective and caring(Harry, or James with Laura).

Looking out for a little girl in a place filled with raping monsters is pretty fatherly, and you have to admit that in the good ending
their connection was pretty strong, it was pretty well implied that he was going to adopt her and take care of her (what Mary would've wanted).

I skipped over SH4 since I was starting to feel like the series was getting stale and not all that scary anymore after SH3.

That video didn't convince me it's going to be any more scary this time around, but fixing the combat and making enemies actually dangerous? That might go a ways towards fixing that.

And it looks beautiful, to boot. Like really, really nice.

Huuuhhh. Looks pretty good but some of the series' clichés they chucked in there kind of seem like half-assed fanservice. Bunny doll, nurses, mannequins... getting a little old. Never mind some really bad horror clichés in general, like the little kid crap. Silent Hill 4 only really failed in atmosphere... and maybe the lame backtracking. Chuck some fog in and adjust the sound design and it would've been much closer in feel to the first three while still freshening things up.

These guys seem way too obsessed with 'staying true' to the series and catering to what they think the fans want (hint: no one gives a shit if the theme park bunnies return) instead of pushing it somewhere new and great.

I kind of hope the combat doesn't end up overcomplex. Though it's definitely true that the combat has always sucked... it would equally suck if it became the focus. Better combat would still be welcome of course.

If I ever buy a 360, not unlikely, I'll check it out.

edit: fuck I sound like a negative nancy. I'm not that down on it. But y'know, the previews for RE5 are like, holy shit I never expected that. This is pretty but same-y seeming so far.

It's too early to tell but they sound like they want to make it worthwhile. I'm casually optimistic. And yeah, outside the framerate, it did look great.

I wish these game preview videos would stop including a pair of dicks talking to each other. News flash, we don't care about your opinion, we want in-game footage, thats it.

I always figured what freaked me out the most about monsters in the old Silent Hills was the feeling that I was better of running from em.

I'm not saying that the combat over-haul is not needed but I just hope they manage to retain that feeling while I'm locking them in a 5 hit combo with a lead pipe.

I'll remain optimistic though because I want so bad for this to be good.
