Yeah it's good, a nice mix of open world, abilities, weapons, vehicles, side missions and beautiful glorious carnage.

Also they have added The Web to tweak the storytelling while rolling it into the gameplay in order to enhance both, it helps the plot along nicely and for me it allows the game to push beyond what would have otherwise been a rather stale plot.
Can you go wildly off course between missions or even mission objectives?

You are dumped back into free roam between story missions but during them the side mission will unavailable, you are however often able to access the rest of the city during them.

The side missions are mostly a way to earn upgrade points and entries that fill out the story, so they tend to be short and simple affairs such as killing a bunch of dudes while in a tank or perhaps do a little bit of base jumping.

    REGARDING GAMESTOP & PROTOTYPE

PROTOTYPE was not street dated. Not many games have official Street Dates. Therefore, if you got it early, your store did not break a street date, they just got the game early.

PROTOTYPE shipped today, that usually means West Coast Gamestops get it earlier since they are closer to the distribution center, so some may have gotten it today per the usual shipping. HOWEVER, some shipments were sent like super priority, including the East Coast, so some stores got it earlier than normal.

I live in Florida and just got my copy.

The employee(s) probably were not lying to you.

I hope this helps clear things up !

Well, I am right there with many of you, it isn't in today, they will have it tomorrow. I am seriously fucking sick of hearing "today was just the shipping day" when it clearly states TODAY IS RELEASE DAY. Not to mention plenty of other places have it.

Hm, maybe I should hoof it over to Target before heading home. I'd love to go over tomorrow to "pick up" my preorder only to shunt the $5 over to Devil Survivor.

As of 2:00 PM I have mine, fresh from the Sunset/Vine store in Los Angeles.

I was told an employee drove to the airport to pick up the shipment, so they could have it today for-sure.

Played it for 10 minutes when I swung by home at lunch. Can't say too much just yet...

...but so far it seemed very similar to the Spider-Man games, so that's at least one guaranteed playthrough.

Any word on whether the PC version works in Windows 7?

Also, the Steam version. Why the hell does it unlock at 8 P.M. EST tomorrow? That seems like a really strange time.

    EDIT: Well, I think... it said "1 day and 1 hour" at 6:54 P.M., and now it's 7:15 P.M. and saying "1 day and 0 hours." Maybe it's 7 P.M. Still a strange time.

Oh hell. I has. (On 360) And it is glorious.

The complaints about canned animations and lackluster building textures are perfectly valid and can be quite noticeable when you're getting all personal like with someone, but in practice they don't matter a whit to me. Largely because I'm usually chopping through crowds* of people and surfing dudes into cars. The scale of the conflict is just immense when it gets going. Mileage will vary, but I'm giggling with glee as I play. This is Hulk alright.

SO MUCH BLOOD. I AM A BLENDER ON LEGS AND MY LOVE COMES WITH THREE FOOT CLAWS.

*Crowds, folks. There are huge numbers of pedestrians on the streets. Dynasty warriors style, they're everywhere.

I have no idea whether he was bullshitting me or not, but the guy at my Gamestop said that the game is available today on the west coast, because that's where the distributor is. Everywhere else is getting it tomorrow. Of course, he also tried to get me to preorder it so it might have all just been a big lie so he could up his preorder numbers.
He was bullshitting you (or he was just ignorant), but all of the Gamestop and EB locations I called aren't getting it until tomorrow, or so they say, and I'm in Phoenix, Arizona.

Thankfully Game Crazy was apparently smart enough to check that little box marked "overnight shipping", and as such, they win my $60 (plus tax).

That is one of the reasons I ALWAYS go to Game Crazy over the Gamestop.
Plus I know the Game Crazy employees. But what ev.

question, what exactly do "canned" animations mean?

A pre-designed animation that plays on command, as opposed to any particular animation being the results of physics applied to a target.

question, what exactly do "canned" animations mean?

Hand-made by an animator entirely. In, say, Uncharted, Drake has some procedural stuff going on so his motions are always a little random. (How his feet are placed, where his arms are going, if he's gonna do a little hobble, how he reacts to the floor or stuff he's running past). Canned animations just mean that when you run, he does the one running animation, when you jump, it's the one jumping animation, that sort of thing.

Weren't all the animations in Assassin's Creed hand-crafted?

So it's not always a bad thing.

None of the animations in GTA4 were "canned" in the traditional sense. They were all generated through the Euphoria animation system running under the hood, which handled all the player animations / soft-body physics interactions. Or maybe that is what you are alluding to and I'm just clinically thick :P.

Canned animations aren't really an issue if there are enough of them. It's when there are just one or two moves for a given action that has to be seen / repeated ad-nauseum that can really harm the "look" of a game. Also when those animations aren't blended well / at all with other movement animations, they can look stiff and unnatural *cough*Fallout 3*cough*

I love the feeling of running through a crowd, holding a burning helicoptor wreck and knocking down everyone in my way... the crowds in this game are massive - the fact that you can't help firing a missile into crowds while driving an APC just to see them fly all over the place is awesome. The stealth missions are fun, it's understandable you can still get away with some crazy things while disguised because the controls are anything but precise. But if you do anything like a larger than normal jump or run up a wall near soldiers they will stop, look and point.

You get massive EP (which my gf refers to as E-penis) from missions and killing sprees, as well as scattered around in the hint orbs - some of which are well hidden. There are enough unlocks to keep anyone busy for a while. I don't understand the whinging I keep seeing about the graphics though, they're totally suitable and the game looks stunning on my 50" full HD.

i has it i has it i has eeeeeeeeet

    it is delicious

looks good at 720p, but i can understand the whinges about oh noes not perfect textures.

    but on the other hand

one of the things i never understood about modern games is why they focus so much on textures with all this power and never do anything fun with it

    well, prototype is that fun

just moving around the city is fantastic

when the game is in motion you cant tell (or care) anymore that the textures dont have those little marks of a true obsessive
    it is beautiful while moving

Hey, just as an aside, I heard that Gamefly's copies of Prototype were from a bad batch that feature a few gamebreaking bugs that could wipe your entire hard drive and get your gamertag banned. So everybody getting this game off Gamefly should delete it off their queues immediately. Especially if you're ahead of me in line. I heard those people are the most at risk.

You could only level like ten or so buildings that were headquarters for the Evil Bad Guy Military Organization

Other than that, they were indestructible
