I would be excited for this game, I really would, if GameFly's shipping times for the midwest didn't suck balls. Shipped Tuesday and I still haven't received it.
The demo should have been the opening to the game, perhaps only the first eight minutes of the game. If I had just seen that, there would have been no doubt ever about a purchase.
Curse you all. I was happily going to skip this one because of the reviews I've seen, but all this positive talk makes me want to go grab it. I yearn for an RPG to play.

I can't believe that this game is actually making me play it instead of Bioshock or the COD4 beta.
There's something magical about this game.

No shit. I decided to take a quick break from Bioschock yesterday and check out the beginning of Blue Dragon. 3 hours later I was still playing the damn thing. It is pretty fantastic and yeah the demo really didn't do it justice.
I couldn't hit the red bar in the demo, due to poor FPS during battles. Unless that's somehow fixed during the actual game, which I doubt, I don't think a purchase will be valid for myself.

There are some framerate problems during some battle sequences than can get on your nerves, but it's nothing game breaking.
Actually kinda hard. I just got the the first boss battle and got my ass kicked the first time. After readjusting stuff (notably formation and getting out of Shadows I was trying to level up) the second time wasn't quite so hard but still challenging.

Robot boss battle from demo comes to mind. But that was with five characters, and four bosses on the screen. I'll be tempted to trade some old PSP games in for this, though I was saving those for PSP-slim turn-ins. Argh argh... must beat Wild Arms 5 before picking up another rpg. ><

It is not like this is a first person shooter. I mean if you let minor frame rate issues be the make or break decision on a rpg I find that kind of silly. The frame rate issues really aren't bad. I wouldn't even have noticed them in the demo if I didn't read the thread here. So far 3 hours into the real game I have noticed any at all.

Attacks still required a certain degree of timing. And I don't think requiring that the graphics run smoothly during a game on the 360, for it is, as you said, just an rpg, before shelling out sixty dollars is such a farce.
I'm sorry that you didn't notice them on the demo though - it was one of the first things that really stuck with me.
I'm on disc three and I still have yet to hit ANY framerate issues that would be anywhere near gamebreaking for me. There is some slowdown when a dragon begins to use it's animation, but at that point your no longer in control anyway so it really doesn't matter.
There's a very obvious lag when you turn the camera, and speak to someone at the same time. This whole begining scene has a lot of flying sand and dust, that my old PC wouldn't have been able to handle, and neither can my 360, apparently.
Sure, it's not gameplay-breaking. (it's an rpg. of course it isn't.) But it's really irritating, when a simple cut-scene with Shu running through the sand looks lagged. And it kind of takes me out of the experience.
On the other hand I adore the VAs.
And.. like.. what's up with the lack of a title screen? It was just all white!
zomg. Have to start over. There's a +1 perma-increase of HP at the start. And then another +3 I missed before the Land Shark. Crap!
Around Mid Disc 3 the Boss battles just get so epic. Also as someone who hated the boss theme at first, just spend 30 hours with it, by then you will absolutely love it. It was really the perfect theme for these battles.

I really agree. The first time I heard it in the demo it made me cringe, but you get into some of the boss battles, and all the attacks are sweeping and moving together, and the rawking out theme is going on in the background, and people are getting the shit beat out of them. Heh, it all actually mixes surprisingly well. Though admittedly i'm at about level 21/18 hours in, so I'm sure that's only going to get bigger.
Hitting the end of the first disk and...
I just did the escort mission on the first disk, and something surprised me. While I haven't had a lot of problems with most of the creatures so far, WTF is with the tiger looking monsters. They don't take a LOT of damage, but holy shit, they can one shot people pretty fast. The four at once fight left me rather O_O.
The thing that gets me though is how stingy they're being with the achievements. Again, approaching the end of the first disk, and I've been trying to explore everything, and the only two achievements I have gotten are two I got in the first couple battles of the game.
So everyone on my friends list is playing Blue Dragon right now, so I gave in to peer pressure and bought it. Just opened it and I have to say, regardless of the game's quality, shittiest packaging ever. The three-disc stack they have is pure shit.
If this game sucks and I just blew $60, I shall be very put off.
Wait...Bruin...are you implying you got one like it is in the picture?
Mine is identical to a one-disc 360 cage, but the spindle that the disc sits on goes a little bit deeper. Disc 3 is at the bottom, Disc 2 directly on top of that, Disc 1 directly on top of that.

No, no, I just didn't know the NA packaging was different from the Japanese one in that way.
Yeah, that sucks, sounds like the Halo 2 limited edition packaging.

Anyway, should I buy this when I'm done with Metroid? I don't have a lot of experience with JRPGs, but I want something to occupy me until Halo, and this does look really good.
UberEv, the "Silent Hill" part you were talking about, is it
Pachess towns underground?
Or is that on DVD3?
DVD3, You will know it when you see it, trust me. Even the music is basically a parody of Silent Hill 1's theme.
It's not
Devour village
is it?
Cause I didn't get that vibe from the music at all. I GOT the vibe from the music in the part I mentioned earlier though.
Also, I just got to DVD3 and I must say, this game is getting better and better.
Although I'm kinda 3-shotting every boss, the story is definitely great and the character interactions are above a large chunk of everything else.
Well all this peer pressure broke me. And like someone said earlier when they picked it up, I'd planned to just "check it out for a few minutes". Next thing I know it's 5 hours later.

So can we take a stand here and just say "This game is awesome" all together?
Cause it seems like everyone is loving it.
So change the thread title to "Everyone is still excited about Blue Dragon"
It was Devour, and I mean the music from the forest you enter right after the town. Perhaps it was just me then...
And your one shotting the bosses because your like level 80 entering DVD3, Real men like me were level 25 fighting through the tower of power. Real men like me emerged victorious from the 5 man bossfight with one character left with 20 health. Real men like me are real men.
Edit: Real men like me had just under two minutes ending the Tower of Power as well... real men like me are lucky as shit.
I'm about eight or nine hours into the game, and just got done with the forest of the dead. I'm level 19, and I utterly destroyed that boss in only a few turns. So I assume I'm in good shape so far, yeah?

Yeah I guess if your knocking bosses down in three hits. I prefer my bosses to be life or death struggles (only lately have I been knocking bosses left and right). You sound like your doing well though, so I wouldn't worry about the Tower of Power.
I really like the music in this game. Can't say I care for the characters all that much, but the game is really polished and I do like the job system more than I expected.
Bought it despite the demo, so I didn't have very high expectations. But it has been pleasantly surprising and easily the most beautiful game on the 360.
Thank god I rushed through Bioshock last week or I'd have to divide my time.
Speaking of the job system, I haven't even changed any of my characters' classes yet. All of their original job levels are at around 27 (character level 19). The only one I'm really thinking about changing to get a few new skills is Jiro. He seems kind of useless at the moment in terms of damage.
Also, the monk class is crazy powerful. Maru is simply owning everything. Even if I don't charge it, he does more damage than Shu.

Put some thought into leveling everyone into at least level 8 Generalist, theres two great abilities you get from it.
Also, putting Zola and Maru into at least a level 6 Sword Master has some great benefits as well.

What do you get from Generalist? And as far as Sword Master, are you referring to Mow Down?
Also, does anyone know the max job level?

Man. I can't help but wonder if this game would have been received better if Toriyama hadn't been the image designer. His stuff is sooo frickin' plain. Despite that though, I'm liking this game so far.

Level 8 Generalist nets you +2 Skills, and +1 Accessory (to use the special accessories).
Sword Master 6 should net you Magic Sword level one, which on it's own is not very powerful, but it always is useful to have your characters have the ability to use elemental attacks. I've seen Zola do 600 more damage than she would have (on critical) by using a level one elemental sword attack in combat.
I also have my Black Mage with half level White Magic, and my White Mage with the inverse, just so each can either heal or do damage in a worst case scenario. Overspecialization simply breeds in weakness in this game. (As in all things)
