I really want to play this game.
I leafed through the guide and the designs in general evoke Dr.Slump mixed with Chrono Trigger. I also like they assumably gave Toriyama free reign to make the monsters as weird as he wanted.
Okay so here's my plan-
I'm going to buy this game now. I could wait but I have a feeling it'll be hard to find pretty soon.
Then I'm going to buy a 360 core/memory card next pay.
On the following paycheck I am going to return the core and buy a Premuim essentailly using the core as a bank( which IMo is all it's good for).
The whole crux of this is because I am extremely poor right now.
Is this utterly insane ?

That's like buying Gasoline first and then buying a car.
Just save up a bit and buy everything at the same time.
The same thing happened to me... don't warp away from the village. Leave through the front entrance and you'll get a custscene where Marumaro will learn the dance. Kinda annoying
Perhaps Klyka is right, I don't know if I can take another playthrough due simply to game mechanics. New Game + on Impossible scales up the enemies appropriately, but nothing else. So your getting like 3 exp per battle, meaning there is no room at all for improvement at level 50. I guess one play-through was enough then.
I bought this game yesterday, put a six or so hours into it between then and now.
I hate almost every aspect of the game; story, characters, voices.
But I adore the game. The visuals are wonderful, the combat is simple and fun, class system is just as flexible as daddy likes, the difficulty makes me feel good about myself, etc.
It doesn't make any sense, but playing the game is a blast, even though most of the important features are huge letdowns.
I really like the battle system. I like the ability system a lot, and keeping abilities from older classes equipped.
The story still hasn't really...picked up yet. I'm still on the first disc, mind you, and I'm doing a lot of battling just for the shit of it.
The soundtrack is pretty decent for the most part. The boss battle music kicks ass, regardless of what anyone says.
The graphics are my biggest issue here. They're really just not that amazing at all, and after everyone talking about how fucktastic they were, I can't help but feel disappointed. Graphically, there are much better games on the 360. I know graphics aren't the main issue, but I was really, really let down by this.

The only other game on the 360 with such impressive effects and a world crafted entirely in one fantastic style that just FITS is Bioshock.
One of the reasons I couldn't sleep last night was because the game kept playing in my head, whether I wanted it to or not. I kept fighting enemies over and over again, never gaining EXP or SP for it, yet trying to do so. Oh Christ, that was annoying.

This is exactly my experience. On the one hand, it's getting more playtime than many games in recent memory, and I'm loving the experience. On the other hand, when I think about it intellectually, as an experience gamer, it should suck quite badly. Why won't it suck?
Anyway, enough of this idle chitchat -- back to playing.

I think it's one of those "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" deals.
It's a fun game to play... as anyone who has played enough games knows, almost anything else can be forgiven if the game is just simply enjoyable to sit down and play.

Okay, I'm about 12 hours in so far, and this game is really starting to grow on me. Like, Dragon Quest VIII grow on me. I'm actually starting to feel something for the characters.
As for Marumaro, it's not uncommon to have characters like him in JRPGs. But rarely do they get much voice acting. It's one thing to read his ridiculous lines, and another to be forced to listen to it.
Also ... (early game spoiler)
... now that I'm past the whole Marumaro-introduction storyline (his sick town), I'm hoping he'll get less and less face time. At least I can only hope ...

He won't talk as much now.
He DOES have one PERFECT line in the game:
"Lady Zolaaaaaaaaaaa" all in a really weird accented way. Watch for it in the castle.

His interaction with Zola is great. I'm just a little into the 2nd disc and the story has really picked up for me. The characters seem to be maturing and gaining a little more depth to them. I hope this continues.
Does Jiro's Minotaur pin one nostril closed and cast flare out the other? That's what it looks like and it's fairly cool.
Yep.
Now a question from someone playing a rented copy who cannot RTFM.
I’m having a bit of trouble putting some of the skills I’m learning from different Shadow classes to use. I can cast Black and White magic with no problem, but how do I use the Barrier or Support abilities? I’m able to just bull rush my way through stuff for now, but I suspect that at some point it will be handy to be able to increase my magic defence or something.
In fact, I’m a little fuzzy on the Class and Skill system as a whole. I’m sort of stumbling through, but I’m certain that there’s a degree of nuance I’m missing.

Oh, and where the hell did Shine Sword go all of a sudden?

Depends on the barrier skills. some are battle skills,s ome are field skills.
For battle skills you simply use them in battle like black/white magic. For field skills, when out on the field, you hold the left trigger, the select the available field skill (must be equipped) for the right/left bumper. Then you press the bumper to use it.

Oh, and where the hell did Shine Sword go all of a sudden?
The class system is pretty robust.. basically as you level them 2 things happen:
1) You gain more skills.
2) That skill "base" attribute levels (not the actual class itself..t hat also goes up obviously).
What this means to you:
1) You can equip any of these skills regardless of class, things like charge attack, etc.
2) For the level Skills when you equip them in other classes (like White/black/barrier/magic sword) you have access to skills up to the level you have that skill.
For your shine sword. If you are a swordsman, you have access to Shine sword. If you equip magic sword to a class other than swordsman, you have access to the magic up to the level of your magic sword skill. What this means is if you have magic sword level 3, and shine is level 4 (I don't know actuals, just example), you can use shine sword as a swordsman but not as another class with magic sword equipped.
Picked this up early afternoon and played for about an hour. It's pretty much exactly what I was expecting for you guys' impressions, a really solid, traditional JRPG.
Also the visuals are so amazing my face literally melted off.

Oh shit, you looked directly at it? We should probably put a NSFFaces tag in the subjet.

Oh, and where the hell did Shine Sword go all of a sudden?
Did you switch classes? Whenever someone is a black mage, for example, they can use any and all black magic spells, regardless of the spells level. When you change their class, in order to use black magic they have to equip the skill, and they will only know what they've learned so far (like when you equip the skill, it will say black magic lvl 1). So you won't be able to access the higher level spells unless you either go back to black mage, or level up black mage enough that you unlock the higher level black magic skills.

Cubes are awesome.
But man, fuck the primitive cube, it just goes on and on.
For any Canadians looking to grab Blue Dragon, it looks like Zellers is putting it on sale for $39.99 from Sept 8th through 14th. If I hadn't already bought it, I'd be all over the game at that price.

What's the level cap for classes? My OCD complains loudly at switching classes before the current one is maxed out. Is there any "final reward" for maxing out, say, the Generalist class or is it just a waste of time?
I really have no inspiration to stick Blue Dragon in my 360, and I don't think that's going to change. I pretty much regret buying it now; I'm probably gonna trade it in this week for Stranglehold.

Look into your Manual, all skills for all classes are in there.
And the max class level is like the max character level: 99.
Mostly, I don't think I'd play this game because I'm kind of tired of Toriyama's art.
Seriously guy, draw a different face.
I've seen the same half dozen people in every single thing he's designed characters for, only moderately tweaked in regards to hair color and clothing.

XBL: Sans Gravitas, Steam, Destiny, Twitch
Destiny Raid Groups: Team NATBurn, Team Fourth Meal (Disbanded)
That would seem prudent.
Of course If I had such sense I wouldn't have concocted the plan in the first place.
I wouldn't worry about having difficulty finding Blue Dragon since it's published by Microsoft. This isn't Atlus we're talking about.
