Anyone have any recomendations, in any category, for good multiplayer DS games? In particular I am interested in card games (eg: CCGs, not poker) or ones with cooperative play but any info would be welcome. If it matters, I am looking to pick up a couple to play with the missus so games that are only good with 3 or more people are not quite what I am looking for.
Edit: I just reread that and I was really unclear on the card bit (long day). We like collectible card games (eg: Magic the Gathering) and the electronic versions thereof. Not so much poker / solitare / uno / traditional card games.
Even if you aren't all that interested in non CCG card-games, clubhouse games is still pretty awesome, and definitely the definitive DS game for multiplayer.
Clubhouse Games is a tedious collection featuring poor versions of mostly luck based games. Try before you buy.
Final Fantasy Fables - Chocobo Tales might be up your street. Has some fun minigames, plus there is a card based combat system that is actually pretty game good. Lovely visual style to it. I normally hate Final Fantasy stuff, but this game is lovely.
Zoo Keeper has a very fun multiplayer mode, featuring the usual Bejewelled-style gameplay with a couple of fun additional random blocks like making your opponent's screen turn monochrome. (Always fun when used at a critical moment.) This can also be played with a single card, which is a bonus. The games are played best of 3 and are pretty fast and furious, my girl loved having a couple of quick battles during short rides on the metro.
Mario Kart has to be an essential, as does Pokemon. Mario Kart has a limited version for single-card play. Elite Beat Agents is a game that you absolutely must own if you have a DS, and the multiplayer has both co-op and versus modes, the versus featuring 5 or 6 new stories exclusive to that mode.
Advance Wars DS if you like strategy games, and this is the finest strategy game on any system. Can be played hotseat on a single DS, so for multiplay on the cheap this is great. As you like CCGs, this could be for you and it is in my top 5 list of DS games anyway.
The preview doesn't mention if they're multiplayer, but you would assume so.
I don't know if it is multiplayer, but really, please do avoid the Marvel CCG game at all costs unless you are already familiar with, and love, the CCG upon which it is based. It recreates the card game, but shrunk down onto a tiny DS screen it is almost impossible to work out what the hell is going one without tapping away at things to enlarge them. I like CCGs, I appreciate the design behind them, but this is a torturous experience. Instead of taking a CCG and making it come to life with sound and graphics and animation, it just gives an inferior experience of playing the original deal.
By all means check it out, especially if you like CCGs, but it really is not the kind of thing that you want to spend money on without knowing for a fact that you will like it. Disappointment is the most likely outcome with this title.
It's an RTS with CCG units. Basically cards have a cost from 1-3 (including half points), and you build a deck of generals worth 8 points. Each has their own rarity, cost, special ability, unit type (there's 6 types, 3 standard RPS, 1 siege, 1 that's a mix between two of the RPS types, and 1 that is neutral), and two ratings for fighting ability and intelligence.
The objective? Destroy the enemy fortress before your own is destroyed. You hold the DS sideways, and move the cards on the touchscreen to where you want them to go, and the "top" screen shows the actions.
After every battle you get a random card.
Besides cards, you also build up a collection of items for your generals, and also some strategies (one-use/battle abilities that can randomly gain levels after battle)
BTW, this was originally an arcade game that is extremely popular and was then ported to the DS.
This game is tedious and boring, and I have played quite a few CCGs. Plus the game has a bug in it that prevents you from beating it, although I hear they are shipping out corrected ones now.
But still. Only DS game I have I wish I hadn't bought.
Jump Ultimate Stars. It's an import but it has single card multiplayer that's tons of fun. If you're not familiar with the game, think Smash Bros. with anime characters. But you don't have to be an anime fan to enjoy it, I hate most anime series but I love JUS.
Meteos is a must-own for anyone. I don't even like puzzle games much, but Meteos had me lining up things in rows of three in my head for months after I stopped playing it. Awesome single card multiplayer, awesome game, I don't really know what more you need.

This answer is Planet Puzzle League
Only requires one card, and can do up to four people off of one cart.
It's a color-based puzzler. Lots of single player content, also.
It doesn't have co-op, but it's fun for versus.
Though, it might be out of print(Atlus game).

Ah. Here it is.
And also a super hero card game one.

Yes, it's an import, but the language is not really a barrier (card lists and ability translations can be found online)
