Heh. It seems that every monster with a tail uses this attack. Except for the Raptors, of course. And the Primatius, although they seem to just jump backwards and bust you with their tail instead.

I just wish they'd become dizzy from using it repeatedly.
I despise the Kut-Ku... even today, he occasionally whips me with his stupid tail and flings me across the zone. Grrr. He's easy as pie with a lance though. Or a SnS. Or a Long Sword... or Great Sword... pretty much he's super easy. But I hate that tail whip.
I've since started to only come in from his left where possible, since he doesn't whip to the right.
I do make exceptions for a ripe opportunity when he chirps, though.

"In Japan, Monster Hunter Portable is huge. Capcom's announced that PSP title Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has shifted 2.5 million copies since going on sale March 2008. The game is being localized for the U.S. as Monster Hunter Portable Unite and will get beefed up via PSN. Previously, we brought word that Sony is planning to introduce a new feature that will let you take your ad hoc-only PSP games online, simulating infrastructure mode by way of your PLAYSTATION 3. That means select titles that were previously playable only locally will be playable with folks nationwide. The first of those select titles is Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, err Monster Hunter Portable Unite."

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Excellent news. This bodes well for MH3 as well, since they've never bothered with one of the "sub"-releases before. The series is getting more attention and localization resources.
RE: Yian Kut-Ku, my favorite touch to this critter is its special stunned animation where it cries "AWRRrrrrrroo..." and then "chiiirpshriek!" repeatedly. Doing heavy enough damage to it at once or using sonic/barrel bombs causes this. It always gets angry afterward, which is also pretty funny.
I wonder if YKK will make the cut in MH3. New screens show two new small-size bird wyverns, one a variation on the other with extra schnozz. The more basic form appears to spit globs of nastiness and I'm guessing the one with the nose bullhorn and inflatable throat sacs has a louder scream.
Kinda hoping that a handful of older monsters don't make the transition to MH3. I would not argue if I never saw the Plesioth or -Blos lines again.

I'm hoping for no Vespoids, personally.
I'm pretty sure Plesioth will be in this, but you'll be able to chase its butt into the water and carve it when it dies there. Since all the 3d assets and animations are being redone, it should have collision and animations that aren't broken.
Did you see the crazy giant Vespoid boss in 2nd G?

Vespoids were in MH1 to make sure you can't camp out on cliffs and ledges, cheesing your way to victory. Problem is that their AI has no limits on their "territory" so they harass you everywhere, constantly, instead of just doing what they were meant to.
Since monsters are getting new abilities, how about giving them the damned ability to attack people on cliffs (like Rathalos getting an upwards fireball in MH2) and remove these little shits from the game? Anyone who would miss them is a bad, evil person.

Amen.
Actually I wouldn't mind a game with just rathian/los, conga, elder dragons, and crabs. :P
As for vespoids they still annoy the fucking hell out of me but a few times they've actually come in handy. If I get dazed by a monster sometimes one will fly by and sting me for a tiny sliver of damage. Snaps me out of it and gives me just enough time to roll or block a big attack. I don't remember if they can snap you out sleep or a scream, but I could swear it's happened to me before.

They can and have for all of us, but that's what the companion Felyne/other Hunters are for and they're much more reliable.
I'm a bad, evil person, because I would miss Vespoids. They add another level of challenge to an already challenging game, and this is a good thing. That, and the Queen Vespoid is a fun (if easy) encounter. Also, Vespoids tend to save me from wyvern fireballs, for some reason. Maybe insects just like me. *grin*
Plessy and Blos... gotta love the challenge. That's all I have to say about that. But then, I'm with a hunting group that does Fatalis runs, so...
Monster Hunter Unite = Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G with Infrastructure? I hope they add more content, as well. I also hope there is a save game translator from MHP2G.
I thought 2nd G already had built in online multiplayer. That's what my friend in Japan told me anyway. If anyone remembers my story, after borrowing my friend's psp and mhf2, I've decided to buy a psp. Even with MH3 coming out, I'll gladly play whatever version of 3 that comes out on the psp. I find it a lot easier to find time to play on the portable because the tv is free to occupy my wife whilst I play.
As for an update on my progress. After getting white serpent blade and barbarol blade, I finally looked up the upgrade paths and decided to work towards the siegmund, so I'm currently using Golem Blade+. Finished all the 2 star quests except for the gold fish one and beat the urgent quest. Time to get through the 3 star quests to start farming the rath dragons.
None of the PSP iterations have had online multiplayer. They are all ad hoc, aka local multiplayer.
I was fairly certain that I too heard that 2nd G which, which hasn't been released in the US yet, had Infrastructure.
That is negatory. We have xlink kai but so do the other ad-hoc games. It's still fun.
The ps3 is gonna sorta offer infrastructure but really its more like sony link kai for psp games that have ad-hoc.
I like it better this way. It's more computer-esque. And you don't have to worry about capcom deciding to shut down the servers and you have no way to play online anymore.
So I've hit a tiny brick wall in MHF2. Need to clear the 7-star Rathalos fight before I can do the dual Tigrex urgent for HR6, but meh, I think I'll save it for the weekend when I have a nice chunk of time to devote to those. I try to do general farming stuff during the week, but I've upgraded most of my stuff to the point where I need to progress further to unlock more G-ranked critters.
Tried the G-ranked Kirin, ran out of time. I probably would've gotten him, but it was the biggest freaking Kirin I've ever seen. I would be able to run under his legs without touching him if the hit detection allowed it. Seriously, I could totally see a normal sized congalala sitting atop this kirin, and it wouldn't look odd at all. (well, except for it being, y'know, a big monkey riding a unicorn).
In the meantime, I've decided to start playing with different weapons. Been thinking of giving hammers a whirl (ha!) as they seem to put out crapload of damage and stagger/KO effects. Any hammer users out there with good tips/general strategies?

Yeah, hammers are a blast, definitely make one and try it out. The big thing with hammers is getting locked into attack animations. The wind up for the attack is very slow on the initial blow, but the next two come very quickly (two ground pounds and then an uppercut swing). The problem is, it's easy to miss with the first and already start the second animation when you need to evade, run, whatever. Not a big problem but can be a problem against quick movers.
The charge attack is fun. Once you begin to glow you can activate it for a powerful two hit or if you're moving and holding the charge you'll start spinning with the hammer outstretched. It's great for wide area but you can't cancel the move and it's pretty long.
But the hammers are extremely fun to use. The damage output and mobility is simply amazing.

Hammers have been one of my favorite weapon types since the first Monster Hunter, and the new KO effects are just gravy. First off, you'll want to grab a hammer with high raw damage. Most people go for Onslaught since it delivers a lot of bang for your required materials buck. It has 1092 raw damage, and a small amount of blue sharpness. All in all, a great beginning hammer.
As far as skills go, the most helpful will probably be High-Grade Earplug, Sharpness +1, Reckless Abandon and Runner; High-Grade Earplug being the most important of them all.
Now, I could type out a long, wordy guide for using hammers, but instead I'll let someone else's video do the talking for me!

Went ahead and started on the path to making Onslaught. Sheesh, it's super easy to make. Sadly, I ran out of Iron ores of all things, so I'm at Anvil Hammer right now. Took it out for a spin against elder Kut-Ku, and much hilarity ensues.
I think I've just become a Hammer fan.
I'll definitely play around with it a bit, see if I can't get better accustomed to it. In fact, maybe I'll take a brief ranking break and play around with all the weapon types I usually don't use, heh.
I'm a primary hammer user (over 200 missions completed with a Hammer and counting in Portable 2nd G). My main attacks are split between the Superpound (Charge up, stand still, and let 'er rip) and the Triple Pound (Triangle, Triangle, and Triangle-omigawd-golfswing!!!). I rarely use the spin attack (Charge up, run and release), unless I want to deal a lot of elemental damage to a single location (and always ALWAYS cancel it with a Triangle attack so you can golfswing at the end).
The vast majority of your attacks will be Charge Up -> Super Pound sniping, followed by a roll. If the enemy is vulnerable and you have the time, Triple Pound. Always aim for the head or legs, if possible. Against the head, enough hits (usually 3 triple pounds, or 2 triple pounds and a superpound) will cause a KO/Faint, which gives you 10 seconds of free hits. Against the legs, you can easily knock a monster over, allowing you one free Triple Pound.
The quick attack (Circle) is nearly useless unless you need a final head hit to cause a Faint after a couple of Triple Pounds. You can combo the quick attack, however, into the Triple Pound.
Be sure to roll out after any combo, as it has faster recovery time and may just save your life.
Don't be afraid to put away your hammer. Your unsheathe attack is decent, and you can unsheathe directly into a charge (R + Triangle + Circle). I often put away my hammer after a couple of combos when I need enhanced mobility, similar to greatsword and other slow weapons.
The main problem with the hammer is the lead time before landing an attack, as fast mobs can scurry away before you pound them. It requires a bit of anticipation, although the Superpound is swift to execute and has an AOE attack at the end.
As far as MHF2, you can make a Bull Tusk Hammer as early as HR2, and that will carry you long enough until you get Onslaught at HR5-6. For MHP2G, I am quite fond of the Khezu Thunder Maul as an early hammer choice, followed by the usual library of weapons (Most folks compare Magnitude and Diablo Chaos Order as the main hammer). The Hammer made from Naruga Karuga parts is suprisingly powerful, as well (an early hammer with Purple Sharpness). My current favorite hammer is the Ucamulbus hammer, but I have a full library of elemental damage weapons that I swap between every mission.
After all these years, they're still missing proper character shadows in MH. The transition from running on land to jumping and swimming in the water looks fantastic though, but underwater battles still look completely ridiculous and goofy to me.

Woohoo, zone loads down to 3 seconds from 12! Also, zones seem larger on average.
Also, it's still sure as heck Monster Hunter. Players didn't know what they were doing though, kind of funny to watch
Well, this non-offscreen trailer confirms Kelbi, Chabu Chabu, Rathalos, and ... Vespoids. Oh, and that the game looks freaking amazing.
New monsters seem to include Schnozzolla, sea-Aptonoth, Gorons, and the first Colossus.
Also, classic controller and split screen co-op confirmed!
It's not about rare items necessarily..it's about ease and volume. It takes maybe five minutes to run through an entire upgraded farm all the while collecting a ton of items. Plus you don't waste any resources at all. I just find it extremely rewarding to run it every time a mission is complete. Armor spheres, honey, rare stones, tons of power and armor seeds (which sell for quite a bit, plantable by the way) as well as rare bugs and fish. If nothing else you can make a pretty penny from selling the items.
Plus there's trenya's boat, which is the only way to get some really rare items.
I can't really think of single negative thing about farming, other than the couple minutes it takes. It's funded god knows how many weapons and armor sets from just selling the excess stones and bugs I have sitting in my inventory from farming.
I love my farm mostly for bomb mining. So many good ores. Getting some dung for fertilizer and planting a shitload (lol) of herbs has kept me well stocked with potions for most of the game.
I just ordered the first MHF from Goozex. Looking forward to trying it out. If I like it I'll probably get MHF2 down the road.
MHF2 is twice as good as MHF, if only because of the extra weapons and the smoother curve. I thoroughly enjoyed MHF, don't get me wrong, but MHF2 improved so many things that I think it'd be silly to go for MHF first.
Oh... concrete reason... Loading times -half- as long. and we're not talking 3 or 4 seconds here... sometimes as long as 30 seconds!
