Joystick is reporting that Monster Hunter Unite will hit American PSP Spring 2009.
Ug. I don't want to wait that long. It is such good news it is getting released here though. I have a feeling it is going to actually sell decent this time. Word of mouth seems like it is finally spreading for MH in the west.
Grove is absolutely correct about the pokke farm. Just get in habit of making the rounds between every mission. It will make your monster hunting life so much easier.

Unite? That's what they're calling 2nd g? And yes 2nd G is fuckawesome. I hate the Jaguarex though. Or Pantherex. Whatever the Black Tigrex is called. I hate him, in all of his cheap ass charge tail throwing goodness I hate him. That's why I'm using his skin on my sword. The hate feeds my blade...

Yeah Unite is portable G with PS3 tunneling built in for multi. I can't wait for black tigrex haha. Monster Hunter so much.
Just finished off my set of Hermitaur U gunner armor. Sexy as hell. Now I need to decide what decorations to put on it.

I need to run some quests with you Corin, there aren't nearly enough gunners in the game.
So all I have left now to make HR5 is Lao Shan Lung. I think I am going to wait until I have my hunting partner to attempt him. I have yet to unlock his normal version in the elder quests perhaps I will start working on that.
On the subject of horns I am thinking of making the Bronz Bell -> Gaoren Bell to start out with being as I have most of the stuff and it looks decent. Is it or should I be looking at something else? I haven't touched a damn hunting horn since the tutorials.
As a solo weapon in MHF2, you want high Raw damage. Sharpness doesn't matter that much, because you can self-ESP easily (and that buff lasts a LONG time). It is essential that you have Flute Expert on your armor (only takes 5 slots if it's not built in), as this adds a minute to all of your buffs. Other than that, a Gaoren horn does great damage and is a decent alternative to a hammer.
Focus on standing with the regular triangle attack just within range of the monster's head. You can chain together many hits this way, and you can even cause a faint in about 10 to 15 hits. Otherwise, the Triangle+Circle superpound sniping works just as well as the Hammer version... probably even better, since you don't have to charge to do it. The quick Circle attack is only useful for dealing elemental/status damage.
The earliest awesome hunting horn is the endgame Giadrome Horn (the one with 1k attack rating). It's easy to get at HR4, and it will last you for a while until you get some of the better horns. I recommend the Gaoren Bell or the Tigrex Horn for good damage, and the Dragonwood Horn for notes/paralyze status. But it's better to just have a library of horns for various situations.
In a group, the notes are WAY more important than the type or amount of damage that you deal. If you run with Stamina-draining folks (Bow, Hammer, any blocking weapon), Purple and Blue notes are a godsend (infinite stamina!). I tend to run with a horn that has Purple - Blue - Red. Purple and Red gives you Attack Up (Hi), which can be played twice for even higher damage (+30% attack rating, baby!). If you run with multiple Horn users, it's good to divide up the notes that you want between the various people (i.e. everyone carries a different horn).
So just got back from TGS it was immense. They really let too many people in at once which ruins it for the majority of people I think, but I got to watch people play monster hunter 3 there was no way I was gonna stand in line for three hours to get to play for all off 10 minutes. Those who did though got an awesome totebag, and I think a cat helmet.

Haha I am probably crazy but I would have waited. Just watching all the videos has been amazing.

Anybody know where to get a wyvern fang? I'll try capturing a plesioth, but man do I ever hate plesioth.
Fangs are pretty common rewards for most dragon-ish monsters you fight, I think. The Raths, maybe Blos, not sure what else. I know the peddling granny lady in town sometimes sells certain fangs; defintely sells ioprey/genprey/velociprey type, not sure about wyvern ones though.
Finally made some progress today, hooray! Took out the 7-star Rathalos; sure enough, when I was a bit more patient and not rushing in, it did the trick. Also tried that pellet shot bug to fight Kirin. Absolutely hilarious. I didn't think it would actually be as fast and easy as people say, but sure enough he went down easy.
Now I've got a fun little Dual Tigrex quest to finish up to get to HR6. This should be fun!
I bit the bullet and captured a plesioth. 6x Wyrven Fangs . And thanks to my new best buddy, the cat that uses the boat in the pokke farm, I got the 3x fire wyrven fluids to upgrade my weapon. Valkyrie Blade get! Hopefully it'll be sufficient to take down rathalos and tigrex to upgrade to spartacus blade. Will it be? or should I upgrade to Sieglinde and build another blade to upgrade to Siegmund?

I have found ranged weapons to be much more effective against rathalos. He flies around too much for melee.

I disagree. Hammer is one of the fastest ways to take out a Rathalos (Gunlances compete for 1st place here). When he proud stances, you whack his head with a triple pound. When he fireballs, you Superpound the head. When he flies up to shoot some fireballs down, you run up under him and charge up (which has Wind Press) and release when he is near the ground after the fireballs. There are places you can stand under most Rathalos (non-Mini) to avoid the tail whip, although the tail whip will always be your main problem when fighting melee against any monster. In the average run, you should get around 2 faints against a Rathalos, which gives you 10 seconds to do two Triple Pounds (again, against the head). With a decent raw hammer, I regularly get kills between 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the rank (G Rank Silver Rathalos goes down in about 15, solo). The only attack I can't deal with is the stupid Rathalos World Tour, but ranged users can't deal with that either.
SnS has problems dealing damage, but the shield prevents you from being wind pressed and fireballed, and saves you against the charge attack (and the tail whip, if you are good). Dual Blades can shred up his legs pretty well, and Demon Dance gives you Wind Press. Long Sword is a good tail cutter and can hit him when he's coming down from the air (if you time it right to avoid the Wind Press). Greatswords are great tail cutters as well, and you can charge-hit the head after a fireball. Gunlances, from my experience, are evil on a stick against Rathalos, since the main Gunlance combo attacks seem to be tailored to hit his head.
So, I took out my shiny new Kut-Ku bow on a test run. Just a simple 'slay some congas' mission.
HOLY CRAP I BOWS. I could probably count on one hand the amount of times those pink monkey bastards could even TOUCH me, and most were from carving their dead comrades! And since it's a spread, I can even blindfire if I need to.
Now I need to get lots of bottles, coatings, and work on finishing my kut-ku armor set. I'm just a few spots away from total kut-ku bling!

It is true but I never have enough stuff and they don't cost much so I typically end up just buying what I need. Bows are great though. I have been using the kut-ku stave III a lot lately.

I'm more just thinking from the 'keep a full stock of empty bottles in my inventory 24/7' approach. Then I can make stuff on the fly if need be.
Also, christ, I just took down the Kut-Ku with my bow. He hit me TWICE. In the entire battle. I had to down ONE first aid medicine.

Gunning rocks.
Keeping the bottles does no good if you don't have the stuff to make coatings with. Even with my pokke farm maxxed out I don't have enough shrooms for 50 power coating every mission. Kut-ku with a bow is cake, a lot of mobs are.

The lady in front of the gathering hall occasionally sells shrooms, at half the usual price. I usually buy a couple of stacks whenever she does. In MHP2G, you can buy and send items directly to your box in stacks of 99.
Two of my hunting group guys are bow users, and they usually run with 50 Power Coatings, Empty Bottles, and 20 Nitroshrooms. Even with 70 Power Coatings, they usually run out by the time the 10 minute mark elapses. When I go melee, I bring extra Power Coatings for them.

Smart. I can't wait for portable 2nd g, er unite. By spring I might even have accomplished most of freedom 2 haha.
I have a friend with a PSP, luckily. I'm going to try and convince him to get this. If I'm lucky, he'll go with the horn. I would KILL for something to keep my stamina up.
I love the bow, second favorite weapon behind twin swords. The only downside is I refuse to use one that doesn't have piercing. I also won't fire a shot if it's not a piercing shot. Don't know why, I just won't do it.
Well, after beating most of the felyne elder quests in MHP2G, I decided to take on the gathering hall quests again.
I'm trying to get from HR6 to HR7 with Los Soul U armor, but Black Gravios is a tough egg to crack.
I went at him with this:
and couldn't cut it. Anyone have suggestions as far as weapons go? Or even attack strategy?
I'm thinking of finally making a heavy bowgun just for this guy, but I haven't really looked into which would be best. Plus I'd have to make a whole new armor set, hurgh.
Dual Tigrex went down relatively easy. Most of the difficulty came from the fact that I haven't fought a tigrex in a long time, let alone two. Once I got accustomed to it again, I managed to pull off a stunning victory in the 9th inning.
Now I'm looking at the available list of quests, and I'm seeing alot of rathians. And rathalos. And more rathians. And more rathalos. And both together. And then both together again, for good measure. And 3 diablos missions. And 2 gravios. I'm starting to detect a trend....
At least they mixed it up by throwing rajang in the mix. Twice.
For Black Gravios, use the Princess Rapier line of weapons and an armor set that gives you ESP. He takes a lot of damage from poison. The ESP makes it easier to poison him, no bounce. Just get in, poison, get away. Repeat. Trap him if you want.
So my PSP decides to do some bizarre power off while I was saving my MHF2 game just now. I'm the proud owner of a corrupted save file where my MHF2 folder is.
Well. Shit.
On the plus side, I think I saved a copy of my file a few days ago on the computer at home. Not a total wash, but I still end up losing a good many hours of progress. :x

I was unaware you could move your save file to and from your computer at will. I guess it makes sense... you know... it's just a file... but I thought there might be some kind of verification or something. Odd... Guess I'll be backing up my 440 hour save file when I get home... I would be devastated if I couldn't transfer my beloved character to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite!

Yeah, just plug your PSP in via a USB cable, go to the PSP crossbar, choose USB connection, then view the files and folders on your PC. You're looking for a folder called SAVEDATA, which I think is in another folder (PSP maybe?). All your save files will be in folders in the SAVEDATA folder. They're listed based on the game serial number (?), MHF2 should be ULUS10266. Or, just look at the icons in the save folders, you'll see that there's an image file or two based on the game, shouldn't be too hard. Just drag 'em over to make a copy, and then if you ever need it back, or switch to a new memory card or something, you've got the copy on your computer.
I figured out why my power went out. I'm running a Slim, with the extended battery and extended battery compartment cover. Apparently the cover is not completely flush to the battery, and if you give it a bump in the wrong way, it's enough to disrupt the contacts. Ugh. Well, guess I can go back to the phat or use the regular battery. Live and learn!
You can also just use a Memory Stick Duo reader and copy over the PSP/GAME/SAVEDATA directory. Many third party Memory Stick Duos come with a USB Memory Stick Duo reader for free.
Well, I decided to make a light bowgun (he must be crazy!) for Black Gravios. I felt inspired by the video on the youtubes where one guy takes on two black gravios solo with smoke bombs, poison shots, sleep shots, and bombs.
While farming silver los for a ruby, however, I decided to try setting up remotejoy again. To my surprise, the new remotejoy lite is incredibly easy to set up, and has worked flawlessly thus far.
Fun times. Oh, and my cat is almost completely useless in this. I'm training a pacifist to be a healer/trapper/distraction, and right now it's only good for the latter.
