Ubisoft do Ads in Games Right for Once.

Lave IILave II Registered User regular
edited September 2007 in Games and Technology
Yeah, so I'm the guy who moans, and moans about ads in games whenever their brought up - so I thought I should promote Ubisoft doing it right for once.

See I'm only against ads in games you've already paid for.

But for once Ubisoft has released complete full games of:

Far Cry
Ghost Recon
And possibly my favourite game of all time:
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

FOR FREE! - with fileplanet - by filling them full with adverts.

So I can't use this as I don't have a stinky PC so enter at your own risk. And I don't know how bad the ads are. But thought people could be interested.

Mods: hope this ok, feel free to lock if not. I'm off out for Friday night, but thought this way people might be able to download intime for a free game over the weekend.

If anyone who tries it wants to post some screenshots I would be quite interested. I don't see how they can put ads in PoP that would spoil the mood massively, but if there are just in a preamble before playing then thats would work.

So these games are just filled with ads, but free? Hmmmm...

Any screenshots of this in action? The only one of those I think I could stomach ads in is Ghost Recon. Far Cry might work...as long as it's just product placement and not huge billboards plastering an island full of soldiers and scientists.

PoP though...I don't think I would want to be running through a Persian castle, slaying sand-beasts with my magical time knife and see billboard ads for Mountain Dew on the wall. That would totally ruin the experience for me.

Maybe the loading screens are just ads?

No idea. Only run OS X/Linux.

I hate ads in games for reasons I've bored people to death with countless times, but I see this as a great way to keep old games about.

And anything that promotes the 'paid & ad free' VS 'free and addy' mindset over "both for more money' is good with me.

I'll give Far Cry a shot with ads. Hopefully it doesn't add any wacky hidden services.

The PoP ads should be in the voiceover parts.

You're running through the cave, bitching to yourself about having to go save that sassy princess, and in the middle the prince remarks (in a slightly different voice) that all of this would be a lot easier with a nice can of Mountain Dew.

That would rock if every game texture is replaced with ads.

I've also been waiting around for FarCry to hit 5$ locally to get it.

    Ads come in two flavours.

Interstitial ads, on loading screens, booting up the game, between levels.

In game ads, where appropriate ads will be displayed in game as part of the world geometry.

I'm more curious how they are implemented. Do they refresh with new content or are the ads completely contained in game folder. Did they tack on a new service that runs in the background, or did they modify the main executables?

That's pretty interesting. I wouldn't mind this sort of thing since it subsidizes my play with ad revenue. I also don't mind inserting them in-game when they belong there. I remember the Axe ads in R6: Vegas got a positive reaction for me. A game that is supposed to be set in the real-world is better off with real-world ads than with fictional ads.

I was fucking /annoyed/ when they brought in the B.K King into Fight Night. That was a huge immersion-breaker. The fight sponsor ads were fine, they're just like real-life. But to have a costumed freak in your corner is ridiculous.

Will the Trojan logo slowly fade in during the "lovemaking" scene in Sands of Time?

There is a lovemaking scene, right? Or am I imagining something that isn't actually there?

Why do I have the feeling that I'll start playing Farcry and the action will suddenly stop and a commercial for pine scented lysol to start playing, just as unskippable as any cutscene, and then after it's over, I'll find that the action never stopped in the background and I'm dead?

Are you sure it finished properly? File planet has a habit of truncating files when they are under heavy load. I still have another 3 hours before mine finishes (the download isn't even using an 8th of my bandwidth).

That doesn't sound too bad. I can essentially tune out things "between" the action, it's just retarded Ghost Rider billboards during gameplay that don't make sense.
