I'm considering buying a handheld, but I'm torn completely between the PSP and the DS. I do like the novelty of the DS interface, but I like the power of the PSP.
Basically, sell me the DS. What games make it worth buying, what features? Why should I want one more than its competitor?
If it helps, I'm pretty much a fan of every gaming genre, bar rhythm action games and whatever you'd class Nintendogs as... *shudder*
If it helps, I'm pretty much a fan of every gaming genre, bar rhythm action games and whatever you'd class Nintendogs as... *shudder*
Too bad, the DS is full of those, and they're the best. This said, it has many other titles. It has a few RPGs and strategy titles, you have some deep adventure games, such as Castlevania. There's a new Zelda game coming on the DS and it looks pretty damn good.
Also, are there GBA games you want? They can be played on the DS.
The DS sells itself. If you don't want one by now you probably won't ever. Many awesome games in many genres. The interface has even revived some older genres and given rise to some new types of games. It has multiple things for just about anyone. I don't want to write out a list of awesome games because there are games lists in many threads on the subject. If you like games, portable games, get a DS.
I only recently bought myself a DS and I have to say it was worth it. The DS first inticed me because of its games, specifically Trauma Center. I liked the idea of being able to actually preform surgery on the patients in game as opposed to just pushing buttons. The possibilites of other games that make good use of the touch screen also inticed me.
The 2nd thing is the price. Over here in Aus the price difference between a PSP and DS is about $100. Being a student with a casual job $100 bucks is a fair bit of money.
The 3rd thing was that most of my mates have a DS and I can vs them later on as I buy more games.
Overall for me, the DS is a better package. Hope this was at least a bit helpful.
I'm being serious, I bought the DS solely to play Phoenix Wright, and it was worth it. Now the selection's great, but still. I paid $150 for one game, and felt it was totally worth it.
Why do you need us to decide for you? Why can't you make up your own mind?
Yeah, if you have to be told, you don't deserve a DS. I bought my PSP at launch, played Lumines, GTA: LCS and that was about it. Sold that thing 6 months ago for a DS, so much happier.
My sin is excused by the fact I bought the PSP at launch. When you have the benefit of hindsight and you still don't realise the DS has the better library of games... you don't deserve one.
Also, are there GBA games you want? They can be played on the DS.
That's pretty much what I've been playing on my DS. I've been going back and playing all the GBA games I missed out on because I couldn't stand playing my GBA SP (it gives me insane hand cramps).
I'll pick up some more DS titles (like Pokemon Pearl and Lunar Knights) when I've cleared a bit more of my backlog away.
I bought my DS because of games like EBA, puzzlequest and Advance wars DS. I love the dual screens and touch screen mechanics in any game. Maybe it is gimmicky but I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily.
The reason I prefer it over the PSP is the games are just a lot of fun wherever you are. If I want to watch a movie or play a game with good graphics I'll play a console or watch a dvd. I really don't feel the need for either of those when I'm travelling usually. I just want something that's quick and fun. I am able to watch movies with my homebrew card but I've been too busy playing games to even bother. Picross is just too addictive :x
The question is more like, how could you not own a DS?
A bit more seriously - I think the PSP has finally pulled out of it's slump and can stand on its own two feet a bit more, but for a very long time for me it was like a PS2 portable - same games, smaller screen, which I discovered wasn't what I wanted out of a handheld. The DS has a handful of console ports, but mostly you'll have entirely new classes of games that aren't possible on other systems, as well as just fucking win games like New Super Mario Brothers that bring current-gen graphics and oldskool gameplay together.
Plus, literally everyone I know has one, and you haven't lived until you've played 8-player Mario Kart DS with a bunch of friends in the same room. One thing that is absolutely killer about the DS is the single-cartridge multiplayer stuff - so many games support it on some level that you don't have to worry too much about everyone having the same game - you might be a bit limited in your level selection but overall it's a blast.
Seriously, at this point I consider a DS almost a requirement, and the PSP as a completely optional purchase. I hardly ever touch mine (although I have been meaning to pick up Crush one of these days, as I rather like puzzlers).
I have an Xbox 360 in at home, and in my warped mind, I place the type of gaming that the PSP and the 360 provides in the same category. I got the red and black DS and love it for casual, on the go gaming that can be started and stopped any time I want.

If New Super Mario Bros was the only game avaible on DS, the purchase would still be worth it.
Well ok, I exagerate a bit I admit but its a damn good game and like millions of other people thats whats sold the DS for me.

It has a lot of good games, including some you might not even be aware of, or even consider buying, like Picross DS. I hate puzzle games, but I love Picross.
Plus it can play GBA games. There's a vast catalog of stuff available on the DS. You're sure to find *something* you'd like, and it's not stupidly expensive. I never owned a handheld before the DS, but I love it dearly.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
I've sunk at LEAST 48 hours total into Planet Puzzle League, and I'm severely lowballing it.
Combined with me and my sister's addiction to Brain Age 1 and 2 (we always try to top each others' high scores), as well as Heroes of Mana, Luminous Arc, and both of our addictions to New Super Mario Bros, this summer has been a very enjoyable one on the DS alone.
That said, I thoroughly enjoy my PSP for listening to songs, browsing through the internet when I'm bored and when there's free wifi, playing with strangers on the same train/bus with the same game for a few minutes.
I suppose they have their strengths, but I can't say much for the DS except for the fact I want one on top of my PSP; and that my PSP has served me well.
If it helps, I'm pretty much a fan of every gaming genre, bar rhythm action games and whatever you'd class Nintendogs as... *shudder*
I, too, hate rhythm games. And yet, Ouendan, Ouendan 2 and Elite Beat Agents are the games I consistently come back to on my DS, and I have nearly 40 games for it at this point.
The cool thing about the DS is that its interface allows the experience of the game to change from what you're used to. That and the stories in the Ouendan/EBA games are just so obscenely awesome, which you can't say for 99% of rhythm games.
I thought this was going to be like "sell me YOUR ds" and I was going to go all psp on you "fuck you get your own!"
Instead I will say this: If one game machine could unite the clans it is the DS. It has just about every category covered, Advance Wars and Pokemon alone could last you several long months if not years.
I love my DS, but the fact that I only have two games is limiting my use of it. One can only play through Resident Evil 1 so many times in their life, and as much as I love Final Fantasy 3, it's never been too much of a 'play for short periods of time' series
Man, some of you guys are fucking pricks. Giving the OP the benefit of the doubt, he comes in and asks for help with a decision I can only assume he's having a hard time with. Some replies in this thread are pretty sane, but come on - saying he doesn't "deserve the DS"? Pull the Wiimotes out of your asses and your nose from Nintendo's once in a while. Before you say anything about "sarcasm detectors", I've been around long enough to know that some of you were being serious as a fucking heart attack.
That being said, I'd go for the DS, if only due to its large and fairly diverse library, decent backwards compatability, and the general ruggedness of the hardware.

right ive got both, got the psp first due to power etc and "gran turismo" tekken and the next upcoming final fantasy VII remake or whatever it is. it has good games and it plays them well, and it does homebrew very well and emulates well. It also has PSX emulation which is a major MAJOR bonus...
but the ds is just fun. new game released, worms open warfare 2, ive played it on both the ds and psp, and the ds version is SO much funner, less lag online and just generally a funner experience...the psp has its great games..but power doesnt always equal more enjoyment...although the screen is nice. oh and the ds emulation is picking up well too .. snes/nes
Okay thanks a million guys I think you've cemented my belief that the DS is the superior handheld And I don't really believe curiosity is a reason not to deserve one? None of my friends own DSs so I couldn't try them at all before posting this. Your advice is much appreciated, think I'll get one asap! Any recommendations for first DS games? I'm thinking about Advance Wars and Super Mario at the moment...
If you want you could do what I did, which is to buy both. Then your PSP can sit dusty and unused forever, inundated with games that are basically awkward versions of something that'd be better on the PS2, while the DS is like a neverending birthday party with free pony rides.
Kirby Canvas Curse and Wariorware are really good and only use the touchscreen, which I usually hate.
Advance Wars gives you the option to use touchscreen or regular. If you liked mario kart at all, I would go as far to say that mario kart ds is the best one (though snaking ruined online play).
For puzzles, Planet Puzzle League/Puzzle Quest/Meteos (disney version!) are all really good.
But yeah, New super mario comes with a buttload of minigames and you dont have to unlock them like in mario 64 ds. Those alone are good times.

No need to defend the PSP, it's a downright neat piece of hardware.
It's just not the DS.
I blame the lack of a second screen.
PSPTS
three screens
take that ds
OH NOES. Hopefully it means a lot of games will get TS subtitles. Metal Gear Solid:Typhoon Survivor.
Final Fantasy: Triumph of Sony

Ah, yeah, it's been on the fritz for a while, you really DO need to change the oil every six months.
He should play Ouendan or EBA first, than post again.
