I wish the game was a little more challenging - I always made an unstoppable hero party and just sent them questing and leveling to every neutral cave I could find - by the time it was time to fight other people they were so outlandishly strong they'd win every battle without contest. Then it was just a matter of moving them from enemy city to enemy city, wiping everyone else off the map.
Which difficulty? It's shit hard on anything higher than normal. That's probably my obsessive desire to clear all the lairs, though... I hate you, sky drakes. I hate you so much.
I still get the urge to cheese out with 11 death books now and then.
Only the most detailed turn-based fantasy strategy game ever made..
Hardly. That prize goes for Fantasy General. But it doesn't change the fact that MoM is still awesome game.
I played that for a bit, and it didn't do much for me. I don't have anything against hexagons, but I guess I loved the open world feeling of MoM more.
LeumasWhite, don't remind me about the freaking Sky Drakes. Why are halfling slingers better against them than my cosmic powers?
Rolo, getting an unstoppable hero party rolling is fiendishly difficult on the higher difficulty levels. You're on the defensive from square one unless you are lucky enough to start on an island or in Myrror without competitors.
I swear an update is en route - I have most of the images separated and everything!
Sweeeeet. Take your time, though. Don't want to see you burn out here.
Here's a random fact that I seem to remember from when I played this regularly. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I remember that Spell of Mastery only shows up as an option for research once you only have 8 spells left to research. If you make a custom character with lots of attributes but few spellbooks, then you won't have many spells you're able to learn, so Spell of Mastery shows up as an option much earlier than it otherwise would.

That's correct. I once did a game where I had one spellbook and the rest being the bonus traits, and got the spell of mastery in a quick jiffy. Of course, without substantial spell support, you had better have beefy armies and heroes...
Lo Pan has FLOATING FUCKING ISLANDS under his control? Diary? I'm boned. I only last week learned how to make my shadow sit up and bark like a dog. Gonna have to hit the books more.
At the least, my growing fame has attracted another hero to my cause:
Shuri (immediately renamed to Xenogears (again, sorry for the gender change)) has some very interesting attributes certain to make her one of the favourites of my army. For one, she's a blademaster, which means she (effectively) never misses:
She's an armsmaster, so all units stacked with her gain xp just for being around her!
Pretty soon all of my army will boast of having trained under the great and powerful Xenogears. They will boast this to their enemies, who will be cowering beneath my soldier's fashionable, yet comfortable kid-leather boots. What? Join my army and I make sure your feet are comfy.
She also has a ranged attack, meaning I can slap enemies upside the head with arrows for several turns before having to get messy up close and personal:
Oh and did I mention that she and the army she's with are wicked fast?
These are the benefits of fame.
I set to building a Farmer's Market in Zuul, because it's not growing fast enough. </sarcasm>
And now that I have a giant stack of heroes and halberdiers, I set my sights on that barbarian town I was eyeballing earlier. Time for a gigantic military victory!
But first, I am sneak attacked from behind by that dog, Lo Pan.
...and his dogs, it seems. Still, I have an ace up my sleeve - TERRIBLE DEATH MAGIC!
Oh. Well. Perhaps I can carry this fight on the strength of arms alone! Two on one ain't so bad, right?
Three on one ain't so... Aw fuck it. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
YES, FLEE! GET OUT WITH YOUR SKINS!
Or, die running. I mean, it's your choice.
Rudeness continues. Freya sets up a watchpost in my territory:
And barbarian Phantom Warriors attack from the north.
I'm... not sure how, since they're summoned creatures, but we live in a world of magic. I suppose that occasionally the forces that swirl around us combine JUST RIGHT to make a host of Phantom Warriors and NOT into a vortex that sucks the world into it. But whatever, that's that crazy Sorcery magic anyway. I never had a knack for it.
Still, they provide little challenge:
And another hero joins!
Morgana (who quickly becomes Tiemler, because none of you guys had volunteered by then and I picked the name of the dude who dug up the MoO strategy guide in the MoO LP thread) the witch is another caster, which will make an already formidable stable of heroes pretty goddamn frightening indeed. She's also Charmed:
Which makes her effectively magic immune (well, status magic immune), and has Missiles Immunity:
Heroes are what MAKES an army..
Also, it occurs to me that I'm ignoring an important aspect of my research:
Turning the damn slider up.
Better.
Silpheed chimes in to let me know she's more buff:
I can't help but think though, that through all this excitement, I'm forgetting something.
Oh that's right. You. Barbarian town. And it looks to be a good fight, too.
Next time! An epic fight for control of Barbarian Town!
I would like to be a hero! I would make a good hero, I would. Why are you laughing? Stop laughing. *glare* You won't be laughing when you're burning. I'll show you, I'LL SHOW YOU ALL!
A-Puck on
Soon... soon I will install you, my precious.

Gah! I was just going to do this and then I saw your thread.
Do you have any objections to me running a parallel game in this thread Imperfect or would you prefer me to wait until you're all done?
You can download it on most abandonware sites, and that company that goes around telling the sites to stop allowing certain games hasn't touched it. But officialy, I don't think it's abandonware.
There is no "official abandonware". That's a fiction. There's copyright and Intellectual Property. and they don't just go poof in 10 years.
I'm not saying I'm pro or against anything, I won't be the one to cast the first stone. But "Official Abandonware" is the very definition of an oxymoron.

Pretty much. There is software given out for free like Tribes, C&C, Star Lords, Marathon, GTA et al. But they still own the rights to it.
Hey, maybe my definition is wrong, but what I always though of as Abandonware is "a company stops charging money for and ceases controlling distribution of a game". And you can voluntarily cede copyright and intellectual property - look at Allegiance.
IANAL, nor even close, but I do know that a company can say "Hey that old game that we made twenty years ago but people still love to play? Get it however you can and don't worry about paying us money for it." More specifically, they can require that IF you get a hold of it, NOBODY be paid for it (to prevent people making a buck off their backs).
(Upon referring to the Wikipedia article, I'm pretty sure the term I'm looking for is not Abandonware, but Public Domain.)

Command and Conquer is now 'official abandonware'. But it's all semantics.

Well, doesn't it take like 75 years for shit to get PD?

No, C&C is not official abandonware. it's a free game, which was released for free with the full consent of the owner.
and No, it's not all semantics. It's the difference between doing something legal and something illegal.

I think it sounds really ridiculous. Like EA got up on a soapbox and announced to the world that they were officially abandoning Command and Conquer, for real and forever and ever. Abandonware is just a term that warez sites use. The idea of EA officially calling it abandonware is about as plausible as them going out and putting an "Officially Piratable" sticker on it.

Edit: Let's get back on topic before we get the thread locked.
I keep this game on a USB flash drive just so I can play it on random computers when I'm bored.
a) This is unspeakably brilliant. I have taken steps to duplicate this, and so far it delights.
b) What the fuck am I doing? Is there a tutorial? I started a game on gimp level, and still got my ass handed to me by some Pixies and a lone barbarian swordsman razing my town. Also, a unit I put on Patrol is on patrol... forever? Please to be helping with character creation and first turn tips.

I think a better way to describe Master of Magic is: Civilization, with spells/beasts/different fantasy races, and tactical combat.
Or an even better way to describe Master of Magic is: the closest you can come to pure sex running MS-DOS.
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
I thought that was Leather Goddesses of Phobos?
You mean Fall from Heaven?
Does Fall from Heaven have tactical combat?
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
Forgive me, I missed that part. No, it does not. It's am amazing mod for Civ 4
It's just that WoW and IRL friends who live far away took over the weekend. And work has taken over the week. And tonight I have company coming over.
Still, I'll make a herculean (if need be) effort to get it written up and posted after they go home, regardless of the time of night.
Sweeeeet. Take your time, though. Don't want to see you burn out here.

So, what version of Age of Wonders is the best?
No update tonight, but I'll sleep it off and do it tomorrow before work/
Well, I'll g into work late likely anyway.
I'm not going to burn out - I love this game! But I do have to work it into a very busy schdule.
The year starts with some good news:
And some bad news:

If you think rogue phantom warriors are weird, what about werewolves, you need a unit to 'curse' with it in the first place
Shadow Magic was the closest to MoM.
Still didn't really hold a candle, but at least they were able to make some good mods, like the War of the Ring mod.
Do you have any objections to me running a parallel game in this thread Imperfect or would you prefer me to wait until you're all done?
