So long story short, I went to visit the gf at school this past weekend and got my first taste of Guitar Hero 2. Got hooked, we played a whole whole lot. Now I'm looking at picking it up for my Xbox 360 at home. However, here's the pickle. I could get GH2 for the 360 off craigslist for about $65-$75 now, or I could just wait until GH3 releases and buy it then. However, GH3 is like two full months away.
I think you need to look at the track list to see what you like more. Guitar Hero 2 is the best place to start, because from what I've seen of Guitar Hero 3 it's going to be extremely difficult - you'll probably need the practice of 2.
Of course, my overall advice is you should get Guitar Hero 2 then get Rock Band.

What would you do?
Do you plan on needing two guitars? Do you plan on picking up Rock Band as well?
If you need two guitars, but aren't picking up Rock Band, I would go ahead and pick up GH2, then when 3 comes out, you end up with both versions and two guitars. This would also let you get some practice in for GH3.
If you want to get Rock Band, the general consensus seems to be to get GH3 and have the bass player for rock band use that controller. I am enough of a consumer whore that I have GH2 with 2 controllers, and I'm picking up GH3 and Rock Band when it comes out. My wallet is crying in anticipation.
Basically, we need more info about which of those games you want, and also if you plan on playing it with others. (not counting online multiplayer)
Also, if it is strictly a question of you have to get either GH3 or GH2, hold out for 3. The main reason I say this is downloadable content for 2 is pretty much dead, but they will be much more active with DLC for 3, especially since they will be competing with Rock Band.
Plus, GH3 is getting many more Master Tracks, which will be nice.

Yeah I will probably plan on having two guitars at some point, I'm just kind of wary of having one with a cord and one wireless. How long is the cord on the 360 guitars? For $65 for GH2 + guitar in good condition, that's a good deal. I probably will not be buying Rock Band anytime soon, that's just a bit much for me.

The cord is around 7' I believe, I've never had it be limiting honestly, but that could change depending on how large a room you're playing in. I'm getting GH3 without the guitar since I already have 2 from GH2, and they aren't a significant upgrade as far as anything I care about.

Also, aren't 360 controller cords just USB? I imagine extensions would be widely available. I mean, I know USB extensions are.
Personally I'd just go ahead and grab GH2 now, then grab GH3 either with or without the guitar, depending on what you feel you need.

You can get GH2 without the guitar when GH3 comes out. They are re-releasing it as game-only. I don't think they are doing that with GH3.
