I'm finally getting my own laptop, and I've been prowling the aisles at the major tech stores, looking for a few games that I simply gotta have. What would you guys suggest that I buy? I have the tech availible for everything out these days, and my tastes lean torwards the MMORPG/games you can play online side.

So what exactly are the specs of your notebook?
And what kind of internet connection do you have?
What games do you have now?

Online games? Well, WoW is easily the most popular and easiest to get into but for fun I'd have to recommend City of Heroes. Not that WoW isn't fun(Its great, especially when you start playing it) but I just find CoH to more fun in general. I know that PA has a good community of players in both games. If PVP is your thing then you might wanna wait for Warhammer Online, since its going to be very PVP orientated.
If shooters are more your cup of tea, you can not go wrong with UT2k4. Its on budget price, has a huge online community and has a bajillion mods for it. CS:S is also fun, but can be very frustrating when you being. Very frustrating.
I'll be running Vista Home Basic, with 160 MB of memory and 2 MB RAM, the nVidia 256mb graphics card, a Soundblaster card, and a broadband connection. I made sure to get it so it could run all the games of today- I AM majoring in Video Game Development and Art, you know. It's a new Dell Inspiron 1520 model notebook.
I have an old version of EverQuest 1 lying around somewhere, but I'd likely just buy the new version if I had to. Other than that, I got nothing.

But at any rate, looking at Dell's site, it should be fine running most things. You probably won't be playing Bioshock or STALKER, but I think Half-Life 2 and the like should work fine.
For MMO's, I'd also recommend City of Heroes/Villains. I really enjoyed playing my pirate who summoned ninja henchmen. I'm liking Lord of the Rings online right now, as well. And Guild Wars is also good.
You can probably hit Bioshock, but not on the best settings. WoW will be fine also. I'd also suggest checking out EVE Online, I got hooked recently, and can't stop playing
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the card I'm getting. It looks like a pretty good one to me. It'll support DX10, too.
That is one of the better notebook graphics cards. If you're at all interested in City of Heroes, come visit the chat thread in the MMO subforum of G&T and we can hook you up with a free trial.
Well, thanks for the offer, but I'm just going to end up buying the full version, sounds like. I know I'm getting Heroes, but is City of Villains any good?

That's just to start. There are other great games of course but those are some good ones to begin with. Things with asterisks are playable online, but there are no MMOs on that list because I don't keep track of them. You might like Guild Wars.
If you're buying the game, make sure to just buy the Good Vs Evil Edition. Its got both games in it. Both games are good, but heroes are more popular, for a variety of reasons. You can play both games for one fee.
I would strongly recommend against any kind of MMO, especially WoW, simply because they are so addictive.
Bad post. Lets not drink, since its so addictive! Lets not eat, because its so addictive! In fact, lets not do anything at all enjoyable because its all so damn addictive!
People have tendencies to only play MMO's once they get into them, but there should be no problem with addictions as long as you're semi-intelligent. As long as you aren't neglecting real life for an MMO, you will have no problems playing one.
Actually I will second the idea for Guild Wars. I've heard nothing but good things about it.
Guild Wars is a great game. Amazing music, beautiful graphics and an excellent skills system.... but the community is retarded. I mean, woah, its just unreal. I would really not recommend GW just because of its community. If you like solo-play with retarded bots, go for it, but don't get it expecting a great sense of community...
...I'm holding off on the new computer until January. Dell is apparently bloated on orders to the tune of new customers having to wait for a month and a half just to get thier machines. It kind of bums me out to think I won't be playing anything until then, but I just think I can use my first loan on other needed things, like games, a trip to PAX '08 (provided I caravan with others), some PA merch, a few hundred to Child's Play when that starts again... and I'd have cash left over to buy the games and to pay the access fees for said games.

Nice strawman.
If someone was looking for new hobbies, and you recommended drinking alcohol... yeah, that wouldn't be good advice, would it?

It's not about intelligence. Thanks for the implied insult though!
We have had this discussion in D&D. MMOs are significantly more addictive than most other genres.
1- They never end
2- They require huge amounts of time commitment
3- Their pseudo-social aspects incite feelings of guilt and shame on people who are trying to quit ("but my guild needs me", "but i have friends here!")
Anyway, looks like the OP closed the thread. If you want to continue this discussion, take it to PMs.

I'm guessing you mean 2 GB ram. Also, There's quite a range of 256 mb nvidia cards.
