No-one suspects Canadia at APEC!

Eleven members of The Chaser team have been detained after conducting a fake motorcade through the city this morning.

Chas Licciardello and Chaser executive producer Julian Morrow are in custody at Surry Hills police station, along with program colleagues, after being arrested for breaching the APEC restricted zone...

...It is believed police pulled the vehicles over near the corner of Bridge and Macquarie streets, after Licciardello emerged from one of the cars dressed as Osama Bin Laden....

...The Chaser convoy had been dressed up to look like an official Canadian motorcade, with Canadian flags attached to the cars and "Canada'' signs visible in the front windscreen.

"No particular reason we chose Canada," said Taylor. "We just thought they'd be a country who the cops wouldn't scrutinise too closely, and who feasibly would only have three cars in their motorcade - as opposed to the 20 or so gas guzzlers that Bush has brought with him..."

...The arrests had been made using new powers available under the APEC Act, he said...

For those of us not in Sydney / Australia, The Chasers are a bunch of guys who pull rather humorous public pranks and create rather embarrasing moments for serious events, all for the lulz generated once it is aired on their TV show.

Also, apparently, my workmate's boyfriend's friends were the ones hired to transport the Chasers in their vehicles, and are now also being "detained" (read: arrested) for further questioning for being invloved. It's a shame his name is Muhammed. Rather funny indeed.

So, they've basically proven that despite all the countless precautions and traffic re-directs in the centre of Sydney, and the countless millions spent on anti-terrorism measures, it all amounts to nothing when a bunch of clowns can get into restricted zones anyway.

Alternatively: Tell us about pranks you've pulled that have generated equally entertaining results!

Actually the Chaser is pretty funny.

It's just that this season has been a little dry.

Just dress up as a Canadian police officer, and you'll be free to travel through any parts of Sydney.

Yeah I totally agree. They do some stuff which is a little incovenient for the targets, to say the least, but they have some great moments.

Admittedly the no-pants subway ride was pretty funny, especially the big police ordeal at the end. But a few of the other videos I browsed through were pretty average. I think Australian and American humour varies greatly.

I think what makes me really like the chaser guys is that on the dvds sometimes they are completely embarrassed by an episode, or a skit, they'll admit when somethings not funny, sometimes even during the episode, which just makes it light hearted and fun. And they are generally level headed, and in most cases the 'pranks' are staged to make a point. Obviously not in this case. Also the current affairs stuff is gold.

Also, while individual skits or segments sometimes miss the mark, overall each show is pretty high quality. Plus, its like the only Australian show like this. Im sure America is bursting at the seams with similar shows, but we're not. Sorry we suck and only have 20 million people and 5 tv channels.

No, but there was a point to this stunt. They wanted to see how far they could get, and they got within 10 metres of the hotel Bush was staying in. The Aust. Govt. spent 140 million dollars on the security aspect of APEC, and a bunch of dudes just made that all amount to nothing. There are snipers on the buildings surrounding Bridge St. Snipers. In Sydney.

The Chasers shouldn't be blamed for this, because they shouldn't have been able to get past the first security checkpoint to start with.

    How embarrassing.

I was watching Prime (omigawd, it is like a stupid naive gossip whores dream) and the presenter was practically calling them the devil. And saying how ABC's producers are in full support and how horrible they are for it.

We have a new Naomi Robson.

But seriousely, prime is non-stop attacking the successful channels and shit.

They are on par with those 3 hour long danoz direct advertisements, being played all day.

Sure, occaisionally you'll see some hot chicks, but oh god does it get boring.

SBS's news is like "30 thousand people died today when an arab man, with both his eyes and his sons eyes carved out, detonated himself, also in today's news, 57 african towns starved, almost to death, they were then set upon by ravaging alligators."

"Then pissed on by passing Israeli forces."

They do have great cartoons though.

If we didn't have APEC, Australia would pretty much collapse but okay, lets let the hippies deal with the apocalypse.

As for chaser's, this was one of the most brilliant stunts ever. The message being, that with the proper preparation and planning, anyone can get though APEC security. Shit, don't the checkpoints have a list of countries that are actually attending? Canada isn't even part of APEC.

The bit where they were blocking people from coming off the escalators in the video in the first post. If somebody did that to me when I was on my way home from work or something, I would be quite annoyed.

Edit: I mean I understand they were trying to make a point about blindly following authority or whatever and it was pretty funny when the security guard just let him carry on, but if I was one of the people being inconvenienced by it, it would be less amusing.
