I didn't see one on the first two pages, so I decided to create one, since it's already into September, and the playoff races are alive and well...

First, some statistics:

American League Standing
East
Red Sox 84-56 (.600)
NY Yankees 78-62 (.557) 6.0
Toronto 71-68 (.511) 12.5
Baltimore 60-78 (.435) 23.0
Tampa Bay 58-82 (.414) 26.0

Central
Cleveland 81-58 (.583)
Detroit 74-65 (.532) 7.0
Minnesota 69-71 (.493) 12.5
Kansas City 62-77 (.446) 19.0
Chi White Sox 59-80 (.424) 22.0

West
LA Angels 82-57 (.590)
Seattle 74-64 (.536) 7.5
Oakland 69-72 (.489) 14.0
Texas 65-74 (.468) 17.0

Wildcard
NY Yankees
Seattle (3.0)
Detroit (3.5)
Toronto (6.5)
Minnesota (9.0)
Oakland (9.5)

National League Standing
East
NY Mets 78-61 (.561)
Philadelphia 73-66 (.525) 5.0
Atlanta 71-69 (.507) 7.5
Washington 63-77 (.450) 15.5
Florida 60-80 (.429) 18.5

Central
Chi Cubs 71-67 (.514)
Milwaukee 71-68 (.511) 0.5
St. Louis 68-68 (.500) 2.0
Cincinnati 63-77 (.450) 9.0
Houston 62-78 (.443) 10.0
Pittsburgh 61-78 (.439) 10.5

West
Arizona 78-63 (.553)
San Diego 76-63 (.547) 1.0
LA Dodgers 73-66 (.525) 4.0
Colorado 72-67 (.518) 5.0
San Francisco 63-77 (.450) 14.5

Wildcard
San Diego
LA Dodgers (3.0)
Philadelphia (3.0)
Colorado (4.0)
Milwaukee (5.0)
Atlanta (5.5)

Discussion Issues
1. Can the Yankees catch the Sox in the East?
2. Can the Mariners catch the Yankees in the Wildcard?
3. Playoff predictions?
4. Award predictions?

DISCUSS!

I personally want to see Detroit pull it together and catch the Yankees. I like Detroit, and felt they really screwed themselves in the WS last year, and I think experience had a lot to do with it. I'd like to see them get a second-straight shot at the post-season.

We're really close to seeing another "impossible" 70 win season out of the Nationals. I remember all the conversations at the beginning of the year about if the Nats would become the losing-est team in history, and now Manny Acta is in contention for Manager of the Year and we're not even in last.

Makes shit a lot of fun.

Also, new stadium next season, I've seen it so far and it is going to be awesome. And with Stan Kasten as president, the guy who put together a decade of winning Atlanta teams, we're going to start making things happen.

I couldn't care either way, but if it's going to happen, it's going to be this year. They have very little chance of catching Boston (it's POSSIBLE, but 6 games out with only 22 games left to play is a huge deficit, considering they haven't been able to get any closer than 4 games in the last 2 months... Even if they sweep the Sox in their upcoming 4 game set, they'd STILL be out by a handful of games with only a little over a week to play), and the Mariners have had to SUCK something awful to let the Yankees get only 3 games up. If they start winning in any appreciable quantity, they should be able to catch them.

I'd love to see the Nationals become a great team. We need an expansion-era team to start putting together a bunch of consecutive winning seasons. Baseball needs a shot in the arm (not that kind).

They converted RFK stadium and they are sharing it with DC United. It's pretty damn nice, not any real bad seats.

This is the new Nationals Park:

They were joking around with Kasten about the new stadium, asking how many of the 41,000 seats are actually luxury boxes. They are putting like a super fancy restaurant with a walk out patio to see the game in, like hundreds of dollars per seat, plus this whole tiered luxury box set up with like six different types of private boxes.

Of course, they are building it in a shit area, and building up a huge shopping complex in the area around it, so everyone is yelling GENTRIFICATION

Baseball needs a new stadium, because the new stadiums always rock!

Camden Yards is fantastic! I have (and will again) traveled to Baltimore JUST to go to Camden, and I don't even care about the O's. I'd do the same for the Nats.

Of course, really historic stadiums do the same thing to me (Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Wrigley).

    It's the 80's circle stadiums that I can't stand.

If the Yankees can sweep the Sox again in their next series they can catch them. If they don't manage that it won't happen. They should have the Wild Card locked up though.

All that means is they get to play the Angles in round 1 and get their asses handed to them as often happens when the Yanks and Angels play.

That's assuming the lead is still 6 games when they meet. The Sox get to play 7 games against Baltimore (without Bedard) and Tampa Bay, so they should go 5-2ish before meeting the Yanks again. The Yanks do get to face KC, but then Toronto, so I expect a 4-3 out of them, so the lead will probably be 7ish by the time they meet. AND it's only a 3 game set.

So, even if they sweep, they're still down 3-4 games.

I don't think the Yanks had a chance. They DID have a chance after their last sweep and the lead was 5 if they had held the lead at 5 or dropped it by a game or so, but now that it's still at 6, I don't see it happening.

But... Then again, weirder things have happened!

Tampa likes to mess shit up late in the year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win the series against Boston. Yankees do like to lose to shitty teams though...so KC might win that series.

It should be close by the end.

I actually hope it's really tight coming down the wire. It's more fun that way. I would hate to see Boston go into the playoffs with a 7-9 game lead. I'm sure most Bostonians would disagree vehemently, but close races are more enjoyable. It makes you watch each game with rapt attention.

I know nothing about McLaren, and I have a fairly solid suspicion that Hargove "left" because Ichiro was tickling the free agent button and did not believe in Hargrove as a coach or leader.

Say what you will about the guy, and his motives may have very well been selfish, but it seems to me he stood up and used his leverage to try and better the team - to win. He got Hargrove out of there, and promptly signed the deal that will effectively see his entire US career in Seattle.

After Junior leaving and the whole A-Rod thing? That was pretty great.

And yes, I miss Lou too. He was almost more fun to watch than the game itself :(

Of course, the tantrums and his expressions were worth the price of admission, but he also knew what he was doing and rotated players in order to achieve the best possible outcome in some of the worst possible scenarios.

On the Hargrove thing: Yeah, he more than likely left because the organization wanted to hang on to Ichiro (who threw a couple of tantrums himself last night wtf), and I had no problem with McLaren at first. I thought he could bring some new ideas to the management side, but then he just slipped into Hargrove's ways and started pissing me off.

Like, what's Sexson's average now? .188? And now they start playing Broussard and Jones, which should have happened like a month ago.

Agreed on all counts. An the one Ichiro tantrum was totally warranted. I was listening to the game on the way home from work last night, and Jeter totally fluffed the tag at 2nd.

Saw the highlights on Sportscenter and it was just a blown call through and through. Ichiro doesn't argue all that often...

    Awesome.

I don't fault him for this. This happened back in 2004 when he was still trying to make a comeback as a pitcher, and was trying to recover from two shoulder surgeries, AND he hasn't received anything since then.

AND, a recent study showed ZERO athletic benefit from taking HGH.
