Why do people keep assuming the AC character will be Tom Nook or anyone else?
If anything, it's going to be an AC human, possibly with the horned hat.
The assumption you question is no less likely than your own assumption. As far as I'm concerned, the characters in the background doesn't mean shit. If they can conditionally add a fighter to every background (Pokemon Trainer), surely they can conditionally take one out of a single background. I just don't buy that as an automatic disqualifier.
Miis are definitely viable. Like Zek said, you can easily just borrow moves from sports games and other things the Miis have been part of (Like some of the Wario Ware: Smooth Moves games include Miis doing various stuff like orchestration and arm-wrestling). Alternatively, Mii's could just emulate another move set, "Oh, I'm using bowser's move set this game. Sweet, fire breath!" chosen randomly at the beginning of the fight.
I can see two possibilities for the Mii's Final Smash. If he is emulating a move set, he uses that character's final smash.
A cooler final smash (I think) would be this: The Mii grabs the smash ball. He takes out a Wii, and gets out a Wii-mote and nun-chuck. The screen zooms out and so it looks like the game is on a "virtual TV". A stream of Miis flood onto the screen, borrowing Miis from your cache. All of your home-grown Miis trample the opposition (Generating Miis from scratch to make the horde look big enough, if you don't have enough miis yourself.)
Eh, I dunno. Maybe not. Maybe he just takes control of the master hand and kicks ass.

Pata don't forget to update the actual list of series represented, not just the picture. :P
Don't forget the Mr. Resetti theory, since he's the only person you can't see in any of the Smashville shots.
The pick-axe would would make for a sweet sweet weapon, and a Monty-Mole-in-Strikers like dig attack. I think it has to be Resetti at this point. Plus Nook and K.K. are wusses. Resetti threatens your life.

Also, you need to fix the eggplant's position in the graph. It's not right still!!
On the topic of Animal Crossing characters, I'd much rather fight with a crazy guy flailing a pick-axe than a scamming shopkeeper or a generic nobody, but I guess that's just me. :rotate:

There are 19 characters on the site right now.
We have what? 11 weeks to go?
That's only 30 characters revealed by launch day, if you do one per week.

The only question is how many of them he's actually willing to reveal before release, especially since we don't know if any of the ones revealed thus far are unlockable. Maybe he's not revealing unlockables, or at least not ones that weren't announced in the first trailer. The only starter characters from Melee that haven't been revealed yet are Captain Falcon and Ness(or Lucas).

Mii Final smash: Screen zooms out, and you get the Wii pointer on screen. Use the remote to pick up any character, the way you do when playing around with Miis, and drop them where you'd like.
I have so many characters I want in it. The list contains Bomberman, and I approve of him having an outing that I haven't despised in the later years. That "realistic" Bomberman game that came out awhile ago made me want to find out who wasted paper on that and mug their gene pool.
You know what would be great? If all the 3rd party characters were revealed in one week, maybe a week or two before the game was released. Imagine the hysteria of one bomb shell every day.

Have we ever gotten a week without a new character after the first couple weeks? And we've gotten at least one week with two chars, so it could be easily more than 30. I think it's awesome that even showing us one thing a day for months isn't enough to reveal all the content in the game (assuming it has at least as much stuff as melee).

Yeah, two weeks ago we didn't get a character. Though it was still an awesome week.
I usually hate to advertise, but the thread at the Platformers has the updates nicely laid out, organized by week.

I've a feeling this is going to sound extremely stupid, but what the hell is the IC logo supposed to be? No matter how hard I look at it, all I see is a chubby little phallus. I feel like the sailboat guy in Mallrats.

I believe it is an eggplant.
I think Eggplants appeared in Ice Climbers before they were in Kid Icarus, so that might explain that.

That was a fun game. But I don't think Nintendo has the license anymore, and the general public doesn't care enough about Popeye to renew it.
* Donkey Kong originally started out with Popeye characters in the roles, with Popeye originally in the role of Jumpman/Mario, Bluto as the role of Donkey Kong, and Olive Oyl as the role of Pauline. But due to licensing disagreements with King Features, this idea was scrubbed. When Donkey Kong went on to have great success, King Features agreed to license the characters again.
* On July 15, 1983, along with Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., Popeye was one of the first three games released for Nintendo's Family Computer (Famicom) game console, also known outside of Japan as the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Dammit. I guess the franchise getting cut is Game and Watch then.
Are you kidding me? If this update doesn't simply scream "all of the characters in Melee are returning", nothing will.
This the crowd that insists that everyone we've seen is unlocked from the start because all unlockable characters won't be shown. Because...well...no reason, just cuz.
No, it's because it doesn't make any sense to reveal secret characters before the game is out. They're called secret characters for a reason.

Actually he was referring to the "informant" on GameFAQs who seemed briefly credible because he called a veteran and newcomer being announced the week we got Pokemon Trainer and Peach. He also said a franchise would be removed from Melee. Then he blew it for himself by claiming Lucas would be the next new character announced.

The thing is, most of the characters in the background of the stage are AC humans.
It would get kind of confusing, I think.
I suppose it could be one of the animal villagers, but who am I kidding?
It'll be Miis. It has to be.
it's called DK Falls.
And the other people in the background of the AC stage are all the notable AC animals.
EDIT: Okay, Houk has a point.

"Only 30." Because that's such a teensy number. :P

Just let the game come out, and have some ridiculous requirements to unlock him (cruel melee) or whatever.
It'd make for a really good second push in sales. As if that were neccessary.
Also would be funny to see reactions from message boards. "I fell for that trick already".

Yeah, but then Nintendo went ahead and did an actual Popeye game. Gimme a sec and I'll find it.
Edit: here ya go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popeye_%28arcade_game%29

The icon will be used for them (it was for the wireframes in Melee), but doubtful if one would be playable.
If you want to be really anal about it, Radarscope became Donkey Kong...
