i don't like the mask covering up just the top half of his face, i think it looks a bit wonky, but other than that i can live with it. nightwing has been really, really good, lately.

It all works for me except the lower cheek thing. That piece of costume on his lower cheek bothers me.

I quite like the mask, but thats obviously going to be where the debate is over since its the same basic costume palette shifted. I love those covers. I wonder if the costume is there for the long run, or if its just for the current story.

[spoiler:0906bcc220]It all makes me wonder how we go from here to supposedly Nightwing being Batman.[/spoiler:0906bcc220]

Its probably more about severing ties with the Bat-team and discarding the old ways.

It be all metaphorical an' shit.

I havent been reading Nightwing, but I really dont understand the direction of this. He is going deep undercover, becoming a kind of morally ambiguous Deathstroke Jr?

He really wants to sever the ties with the Bat-family? Batman has been written extremly poorly lately. You know it when the characters that make up the Bat-family are even trying to get away from him. I dont understand the need to write "psycho Batman", everything trying to be all dark and gritty and somehow be rationalized psychologically as a deepy distrubed lunatic who just happens to be CRAZY about taking out other lunatics... I dont get it.

Batman can be a reasonably mentally stable character, who isnt a complete asshole to everyone close to him. He have love for other people and show a sense of caring to his family, etc. He doesnt need to be written as a completely psychotic asshole.

This is why I like Elseworlds.

So in Robin you have appearances by a character called 'Tommy Tinker the Clockwork Commando'. Is he based on this guy?

    Heh, weird.

I forgot which eye he was meant to have, and its the second one the Luthor thats wrong. Unless its been reversed and they are doing Scout handshakes. Also Talia looks a bit manish.

Okay, so I'm a little behind the times and just finished up the 2nd season of justice league unlimited. What a crazy Epilogue.

It makes me sad to see Bats old, and vulnerable. :( I guess he never does shack up with Diana.

Sorry about being a Batman newb (I only know the bit I watched in TAS, and what little a professor told me about DKR), but what's a good graphic collection to give as a present to a Batman fan?

I scouted ahead, and I saw three that might be interesting....
Batman: Hongkong (he goes to Hong Kong and fights alongside a guy named Night Dragon)
Trinity (it's the one where Batman, Supes, and WW meet for the first time)
Batman's Greatest Stories (Not sure about the title, but it's the one with the cool painted Batman with his arms folded around his chest.

Trouble is, I'm not sure what she's already read. She's pretty well-versed on the Batman stories, particularly on the Nightwing stories part. I think she also spent some time downloading some complete arcs, so it'll be a problem.

Oh, and she has an irrational hate for Superman.

Thanks in advance! I hope the problem's not an unsolvable one. :) Maybe you can recommend some better titles, but I think she's read DKR already.

Similar to the post above me, but I'm looking to get into some comics, I read some when I was younger but never seriously. Would Batman: Year One be the most recommended place to start? And where should I go from there?

Yeah, I'd like to know a good place to start reading Batman, too. I read some comic the other day at work. Except I think it was only like half of the actual comic or whatever, because it came with some Batman game strategy guide. It had a chick named Sasha in it.

Also, even though I've never read Nightwing, I always thought his old costume (the one right before this new red one, I think. It was black with the blue "wings" or whatever on it) was like the coolest costume ever.

I think Batman: Year One is a good place to start. It's the cannon post-Crisis origin of Batman now, even though it's not terribly different from his original origin story. And it's just an all-around excellent Batman story. Just don't expect to see Batman fighting the Joker or Two-Face.

Batman: Chronicles is kind of interesting if you like ancient comics, since it reprints Batman's first appearances in comics. The stories are really outdated now, but they're sort of fun, and it's interesting to see how much Batman has changed over the years. For instance, he actually killed criminals in the first stories, and he had *gasp* a steady relationship with a woman who wasn't secretly a criminal. It's probably not the best place to start if you want to get into the current Batman mythos, but it's fun to read if you want to see how Batman was originally invisioned.

Start out with Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween. These two trades basically embody what's great about Batman to me, and they're both available pretty cheap. From there go pick up Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. I don't care for some of it, but a lot of people do, and it's generally held in pretty high regard.

I also enjoyed what I read of the Broken Bat saga, currently collected in three trades. I believe it goes, Knightfall, Knights___, and Knightsend. Some decent stories from the nineties where Batman was a dick, then replaced by an even bigger dick, that looked like Iron Man and Batman's lovechild.

No Man's Land, which was collected in five or six trades was pretty good. Basically, Gotham is struck by an earthquake, which reduces most of the city to ruins. The US officially declares Gotham sealed off, and prevents anyone from rendering aid to those still trapped inside, leaving citizens to band together for protection. Different Batman rogues then start staking out territory, with the Gotham City PD, led by Jim Gordon, forced to wrestle the city back under control, one block at a time. And in the middle of it all is Batman and his Bat-family, with a new mysterious Batgirl popping up. Pretty good stuff.

Then, to catch up on Batman current events, you'll need to read Hush, which comes in two parts, War Games, which most everybody agreed sucked, but is still important, and the recent Red Hood arc by Judd Winick.

It's also a good idea to read The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, which delves into the Joker's past a bit, as well as his relationship with Batman. Batgirl: Year One, is also really enjoyable, detailing how Barbara Gordon became the first Batgirl.

The trade were Knightfall volumes 1 and 2 and Knightsend. In the comics there was also Knightquest between -fall and -send, which was never collected. It was actually 2 series in effect, with half the Bat-titles detailing Knightquest: The Crusade with AzBats in Gotham, and the other half Knightquest: The Search, which was about Bruce and Alfred in England. All I know about either of those I got from the awesome BBC audio play, which I cannot recomend enough.

Also, as I say everytime it comes up, you might want to leave No Mans Land volume 2. Both the art and story is appauling. You might want to read the novelisation by Greg Rukka though.

Hmm, you're right. He is near perfect. The sloping brow really reminds me of the BTAS Joker. Hair dye, face paint, strech the smile a little...

What they need to do is get this guy, then dub in Mark Hamill's voice. No one else has ever done a better Joker laugh.
