The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
This is now my general art thread. I've put up all my past stuff worth noting, and will be posting anything else I come up with remotely soon.
Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures, but the thing was essentially ready for the junk heap. Full of scratches, dents, and 2 of the corners were completely chipped away. So I sanded it down, wood puttied all the scratches and dings I could, and painted it. Here's the end product:
Some people like shitty music, but I try not to hold that agains their art. I think it turned out really nice. I'd like to actually be able to run my hand over it to see the craftsmanship, but kudos!
They're one of my absolute favorite artists, and the driving force behind the project, and I'm really fond of the Prism logo as far as design goes anyways.
Also: it looks like a bench because it used to be a piano bench that got turned into a small coffee table, so you aren't too far off base with your assessment!
As far as the craftsmanship goes, this is my first attempt doing anything like this, and the fact that it was in such horrid shape means that it certainly isn't flawless, but it is leaps and bounds better (condition wise) than before I started on it. The paint is done, and I'm in the process of spraying over it with polyurethane.
I really enjoyed doing it though, and it transformed something I was honestly considering just tossing into the dumpster into something that I'll end up keeping for quite some time. I have a coat rack lined up next, I'm going to be stripping the paint off that and doing my own design, I have a good idea of where I want to go with it, and I'll be sure to post it up whenever I get around to doing it.
That looks really great. It looks a little flat though, if that's not clear coated, you're gonna want to put a few coats of lacquer on that to seal it. If for no other reason than to protect the art, but it'll also look better if you do a good job of that and you throw down some wood oil on top once a week to polish it up.

Well I've already got 2-ish coats of polyurethane on it, however the can ran out so I'm going to get another one tomorrow at the store, so I may be in too far to put lacquer on it (however I really have no clue, everything woodwork related is completely foreign to me) so at this point I'm open to any suggestions on how best to preserve and protect it.
Projeck- Hell yes they are
EDIT: In response to Anabele- I painted the design with Acrylic paint
Without derailing this too much, Pink Floyd is good, if you like Rock N' Roll constipation. PF is all about the rock build up, where they build and they build, but the rock'n out never comes.

I just can't get into that
I respect your opinion, and you have every right to dislike the band. Simply because I think the band is one of the greatest things since sliced bread doesn't mean everyone does, or should. But I think maybe you're listening to them for the wrong reasons. PF isn't about heavy, hard, fast, loud rock--if you're looking for that you won't find it here. I love their music as a whole, the ideas they convey with their albums, and the fact that they don't simply rely on guitar to get it done (though I think david gilmour is a freaking brilliant guitarist). The music itself is what makes them brilliant, the lyrics, the Piano, the Saxophone that comes into play, the synth, the amazing AMAZING singing in "Great gig in the Sky", and the creative genious put forth in nearly everything they created in their "golden age" (Meddle, Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here)
Though if you want to hear some true rock-outtage, listen to the completely EPIC guitar solos in "comfortably numb".
the amazing AMAZING singing in "Great gig in the Sky"
To further derail the thread, even though PF is my favourite band, I feel obliged to mention that the singing in The Great Gig is 100% authored and performed by the hired singer.
E: if you manage to enjoy a good build up but the lack of rock-outage disappoints you, you should probably try King Crimson, eh?
You know a thread has gone to hell when the OP is joining in on the derailing.
Anyway, the table looks pretty wicked. It could've done with a sharper arch for the moon (as it stands it's not perfectly round and it's very noticable) since the rest of it is all sharp lines and perfect geometric shapes. Where the light is hitting the prism could've had a bit smoother transition and if you look at the cover, it actually extends all the way to the spectrum.
Uh, these are minor quibbles. Might want to look into them, but they aren't going to ruin it. Also, I'm having trouble finding a thread where Elliot's not getting harassed for his opinions on superficial bullshit.

Edit: Which is awesome, of course.
I know what you mean, I've noticed the less-than-perfect shape of the moon, and I tried my best to flesh it out and round it, but I got to the point where I had to stop, because the moon was getting progressively bigger, and I didn't want it to turn into some sort of crazy egg-shaped moon-thing. And as far as the prism goes, I hear that as well, however there are multiple different versions of the prism (some with the fade stopping before it gets to the other edge, as is the case in the picture, some that have a grey-ish triangle with no outline lines whatsoever) and I decided to go with this version. Ideally I would have faded the edges of the triangle into the black background, but I'm relatively inexperienced when it comes to painting so I opted to stay with mostly solid lines.
Mayday- I realize that the singing is authored and performed by a woman and not PF (unless somebody kicked Roger Waters in the Nuts and recorded him wailing, but I'm pretty sure that isn't the case) , but that doesn't make it any less amazing to me :P Also, I just started listening to King Crimson, and I really enjoy their stuff. Wish I would have known about it years ago.
If you wanna talk prog rock, Plezeant Cosmodrome is where it's at!
Also, I don't think the shape of the moon is a huge deal. The moon is an organic shape anyhow, so in this case I think you can get away with it. Also, for the prism, just out of curiousity, how did you go about painting the lines for that? From what I can tell they are pretty darn straight, but I'd imagine doing the color lines would be challanging.
And looking closer at the actual design of the bench, it has a kitchy retro design to it (though probably not "retro" when it was made, if you know what I mean), and I think that lends so well to what you actually ended up doing with it.

Indeed, I hadn't thought of the whole retro aspect! Just another thing to add to the charm of it, I suppose.
As far as the white lines for the prism, I used painters tape. It ended up working beautifully, though I had to be mindful working around the moon not to accidentally peel off the acrylic paint with the tape. The Color lines were also done with Painters tape--to an extent. I used it on the bottom of each stripe (where there was no paint yet) and I filled in the rest and painstakingly painted to the edge of the previous stripe in the rainbow. It took a lot longer, but I was able to finish quicker because I didn't have to wait for the previous stripe to dry before I started the next, and I didn't have to worry about accidentally lifting some of the paint with the tape.
Magictoaster & Prospicience: Thanks for you comments I like Sinatra too, though when you're talking about older music you'd more often catch me listening to Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, And Ray Charles. I like to think I have a pretty wide taste when it comes to music, though, and Sinatra was definitely one of the greats.

Nothing about Pink Floyd was the work of any one person, though. It's hardly offensive that they let the vocalist write her own part, as she clearly had the skill and it obviously fits.

CUZ THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE MIDDLE AND IT'S GIVING ME A RASH
So I've decided to turn this into my general art thread. I'm getting back into it more now that I'm going back to school...I figure I should get back into the habit of doing art as I'm going to be pursuing graphic design (though I have no tablet and no experience with digital art...which makes me nervous...but hopefully I should be getting a tablet by the end of the year so I'll be able to start practicing.)
I'm going to post some older works so you guys can get a feel for what I've done...I tend to do much better in a structured environment (read: art class) than I do on my own, where I find my lack of motivation tends to make me practice much less than I should. I also feel I lack creativity when left without a project or a set of guidelines to push me along, and that my impatience and eagerness to finish the work can sometimes lead to diminished quality.
my most recent big project besides the table: Done in class last year, in colored pencil--I'm pretty happy with this piece.
A quick-ish still life study on transparency, done over the course of a few class periods. Not perfect, but I was fairly intimidated by trying to get the feel of glass down, so overall I was fairly pleased.
Reference:
Graphite, one of the few things I did outside of class, from a reference pic. Biggest things I can see are that the left eye is too big, and my shading isn't as aggressive as it could be.
Another piece done last year, in chalk and graphite.
Mixed media still life, done in ink, graphite, and chalk.
Done WAAAAAAAAAY back in 2003 or so, in a HS art class...this is NOT my drawing, it was traced onto the page from a reference photocopy of another artists' work for the sole purpose of a coloring exercise, the page was divided up into 4 quadrants, and each quadrant was colored in a different style: Left is my own personal style, top is pop art, right is impressionism, and bottom photo realism. I figured I'd slap this one on, because it's the oldest work I still have record of (that is worth mention anyway)
And last but not least, just for the hell of it, IT'SA ME!
I'm really surprised and a bit sad that nobody else has said anything at all, It's rare that I can get feedback from other artists, virtually everyone I know is a non-artist so I don't get much besides the typical "omg that's awesome". This place seems friendly and helpful so I stopped lurking and posted some of my stuff hoping to get impressions comments and critiques...
Hmmm...don't know why i didn't notice it before, must have not clicked that particular spoiler tag, but that Runts piece is awesome.
I work mostly in colored pencils myself and know they take forever to get anywhere with, so it's always cool to see someone turn out something with that level of detail. I like the blending on the "RUNTS" lettering, and for some reason the wrinkle highlight that crosses the R and the U looks especially amazing to me.
Three extra points for working on black paper, most unloved of all the papers.

I think the reson that you aren't getting feedback (critique) is that you're doing just fine, and any improvement you make will be through practice. You have a good eye.

Yeah, really not much to critique - your studies look solid, good research being done, good results shown. Keep up with them and then show us a finished creative piece or two.

What did you paint it with? Are you going to clear coat it?

Also, cool table. My first impression however was that it was the early stages of a satanic symbol.
I freak'n love Frank, got his greatest hits for my HS graduation about 7 years ago. That's some baby makin' music right there.
I also like Pink Floyd too though, great table man.
