I bought this game today for DS, and after hours play, I'm glad to say that works surprisingly well. You shoot your weapon with B, jump with A, X reveals the equipment list, and by holding L or R you can scroll map with D-pad or stylus. By pressing start you can open map to the upper screen. Maybe I'm missing something, but I was surprised to notice that you can't scroll map with stylus on normal mode. This isn't real problem in my book, because controls have been given some serious thought, and mapped well to DS's layout.
AI is relatively good, but it does think in some rare cases for long time (around 10-15 seconds) before doing its move. It has been so long since I played Worms for last time, but I think that the AI is better than it was on Worms 2, and doesn't do blatantly stupid moves.
In addition of having quick play, game features local and online multiplayer, tutorials, puzzle mode, some minigames that I haven't tried yet, and campaign mode where you complete missions to gain credits. I don't really understand the idea behind having seperate puzzle and campaign mode, because both work practically in same way (i.e. you get progressively harder challenges).
What really surprised me was how much game gives you freedom to customize various things. You can create yourself new teams, draw banners, select your team's sound bank*, draw new battle maps using stylus, select what weapons will be used on match, save your settings into presets, and so on. Additional soundbanks, graphics and levels can be bought from the store with credits you have gained from the campaign mode. I haven't tried online yet, because DS doesn't want to work with my router.
My only gripes about the game so far are that some game's graphics are little fuzzy, and that it is sometimes little hard to read text. Furthermore, I don't really like idea of forcing the player to play campaign mode just to unlock stuff.
* There is around 15 sound banks, which mostly feature different languages. There is also few old fan favorites, like scottish accent.
Hypnotically inclined.

And I think you can (pseudo-)scroll the map with the stylus in default control mode...just tap where you want the camera to center.
And you don't HAVE to do campaign mode to unlock stuff. The puzzle mode gives you credits, as do the minigames (whatever they call them..."laboratory mode" or something). But the campaign mode is fun, anyway. Once you get past the first few easy tutorial type campaign missions, they're essentially you vs. the PC, with specific mission setups. And a "boss" every 5 levels.
The OP states that there is, so I'm gonna go with "yes".
Shit. I apologize. Apparently I have some reading comprehension issues
Also, I got a fully featured Worms on the 360 for like a fourth of the price of this. So yeah.
The single player is actually pretty good compared to the 360 version (which had next to none). And way more weapons. I wouldn't sign it off yet. Also, if you get your DS in a radius of someone else who has it, they can Zap you a demo that you can play until you restart your DS (I think that is the span). Pretty cool feature.
Also, game on thread: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=35017

Yes, it's more like Armaggeddon, the 360 version had the least amount of weapons, more comparable to the first version of worms for PSOne.
And it is a 2D game, none of the 3D garbage.
Origin: Broncbuster
The DS and 360 (and PSP) versions are all 2D. These are the Worms that you are looking for.
From the other Worms thread, from what Squirminator said, it sounds like the DS version is the best, with the best physics and best weapons variety.
another 2D one is coming to wii, saw it on IGN yesterday.
I think World Party was better. It had everything Armaggedon had and a little more.
So the rumors are true, the DS will be used as a map making tool for a Wii version of 2D worms with online!
And we could DL maps off of Nintendo's online service.
I knew that Worms would be saved by Nintendo before Team17 and the publisher ran it into the ground!
In fact, it actually has unique weapons, like sentry guns, lightning bolts, and the Buffalo of Lies (from the description online it's like a mad cow except that it bounces back after exploding instead of being released multiple times). I think this is the first time they've added weapons since Armageddon.
Do cluster bombs still suck? I'd like them to fix that at some point, but I suppose it's a Worms tradition now.
Umm... If you knew how to place clusterbomb, it was guaranteed insta kill in Worms 2 and its sequels. This trick doesn't work in Open Warfare anymore.
Apparently so far its got 8.7 from IGN, 9/10 from 1Up, 4.75/5 from GamePro, A- from UndergroundOnline, and a 60/100 from Games Master UK which Ive never heard of... I guess its a magazine since theres no link to see what their complaints were, but all the other reviews are great, especially compared to the scores from the first Worms on DS.
Damnit, I'm low on cash, but a good online Worms on DS is so fucking tempting.
The only bad thing about it is when you're doing single cart multiplay, the systems become unsynced very easily. Which sucks balls.
Yes it's online.
And yes, Armageddon was awesome. Never could unlock the bow on my n64 version though.
EDIT: So, those of you that have it, just where are you? I'm in the states, and I reserved it at a Game Crazy, since they said it got 'pushed back' to the 18th.
EDITx2: Looks like I should have went to...well, any other store in the world and gotten this. Oh well, I happen to like that shop otherwise and I can now clean up my backlog a bit. Biased rationalization ftw!
Single cart, yes, but no hot-seat, which was incredibly surprising.
Ah well, I'll probably get it anyway. The new weapons sound too cool to resist
I know precisely one other person with a DS, and I don't have a compatible wireless link anywhere near me at uni - that seriously sucks. I love playing against myself just to try out new tactics without the computer AI getting in the way.
Aha, excellent! Just ordered the game
And :^: fellow ntsc-uk'er :P
Well I'll be jivvered. :P
Single cart multiplayer sucks.
3 out of the 4 times I've tried playing with my girlfriend the game became unsynced, which I think is a pretty serious problem.

...excuse me, I think I have something in my eye...
There should really be a 'hallelujah' emote on this forum..
Open Warfare 2 is still really awesome for what it is, after struggling with those GBA games (although World Party GBA was okay) and the first Open Warfare, it's nice to have a really kick ass portable version.
They patched this too with the new beta releases in Armageddon, it seems, because I can't pull it off at all. I knew that an earlier patch decreased the frequency if it happening, but I didn't see it happen in my cluster bomb test run just now.
This is very true, but what's funny is that Armageddon is the same way inherently (even over LAN). So in one sense it's familiar to me, but since people are saying that multi-cart doesn't do this it's kind of disappointing and doesn't make much sense. But wait a second...
What kind of issues do you run into when your games are out of sync? The only real problem we had with it was I'd see my friend's reaction to his triumph/utter stupidity before it was represented on my screen. Is there really anything beyond that? Because like I said that syncing issue has been part of Worms for a while (although again it's apparently non-existent in multi-cart which is frustrating).
It was similar enough for me, a lot easier to play than World Party was on GBA (which should have had a much better representation of physics).
