Computer won't boot completely....suggestions needed

I went home two nights ago, and turned on my computer only to find that it will no longer make it past the initial Windows XP screen (black background, small scrolling bar below the logo). Not only that, it will also not boot up into safe mode. The computer is only a couple months old, but was built and can't be sent back for repairs as a whole. I have a few friends that have told me to just start buying parts, and swap them out until something works. This plan seems incredibly inefficient to me, but it's my only option at the moment.

I am hoping this is a normal issue that can be resolved quickly. Is there anyway to do a diagnosis on certain components to rule them out as the problem? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Boot from your Windows XP install disc and fix the install.

Could be a ram problem. Downloading the memtest bootcd and running it will tell you, then if you have more than one stick try taking one out.
