My boyfriend and I have a week off from work and school so we are trying to think of fun/interesting things to do. We have been together for over 5 years so we have done our share of movies and other ordinary activities. We live in Upstate NY, don't drink, and don't want to go further than 5 hours away by car. Any ideas?
go get some crabcakes in Maine, or visit the Ben and Jerries Facotry in Vermont

Boston is a fun city. My girlfriend likes all the corny ghosty tours they have in all the towns around here (we've done Salem, Boston and Fall River so far).
seriously though. Go sight seeing. Google the internets for cool stuff within 5 hours of your location and drive there. listen to great music on the way. Pack some good food and have a good time
Find a good nature trail with a picnicking area and go off for a nice walk. You can lay down a blanket and eat some sandwiches for lunch and just enjoy nature together.
It sounds boring, but I've always found it fun, and I'm not a very out-doorsy person. :P
Go to Boston and take the Duck Tours. Then walk around and see the stuff that the tour didn't cover. It's really cool and historical if you take the time to look at it.
Go to Montreal. Great city, close in area, completely different than where you're from. Though I am from NYC, I go to school up there and its a great time.
curses, I can't recommend winery tours :P. erm, what do the locals specialise in, food and craft-wise? There's usually some sort of cottage knitting/cake/cheese/fudge/deep-fried-eyeball industry wherever you go that can afford a fine opportunity to spend money on unhealthy food or pointless household fripperies. I'll second hiking + picnic, though. Historical stuff can be hit'n'miss depending on the operator, but you'll often learn some very interesting things about your region's past. Also, the tour guides/enthusiasts tend to be entertainingly nuts, so there's that.
Possibly the only H/A thread where :winky: could be a stand alone reply? I would say to try going jogging or walking in unfamiliar (yet nice) territory. It's kind of like hiking, but less work :-p. Also, there can sometimes be really cool local theatre if you check around. It's usually pretty cheap, and not always that bad.
My girlfriend and I recently had a baby who was born prematurely. He's been in the hospital for a couple months now, and every moment we've been away from him has been doing basically couple's only things, it was suggested by our parents actually... since we're so young. They told us to think of any and everything we've always wanted to do or try, within money limits, obviously... and do it.
So far we've:
Lay under the starlit sky, on a blanket with hot chocolate. (Her pick)
Played Halo, Bioshock, and Guitar Hero 2, together.(mine... obviously)
Cooked a meal, that neither of us knew how to cook. (It was fun... but needless to say... we ended up with a big mess... and going out to eat.)
Took a drive to see where we'd end up and took a tour.
My girlfriend wants me to take Yoga with her now. Ugh. But I'll try it. It could be fun.
It's really easy to just think of something and do it. Be open to his suggestions though. As he should be open to yours.
exercise and dance classes are great so long as you realise you're there to just have fun and learn something, not 'win' in some way. if you can get past that block, a lot of things become more enjoyable
I wouldn't call wine tasting "drinking". If you've never done it, it's like a road trip from mansion to mansion (wine tasting rooms) where they will give (or sometimes if they're well-known, sell) you different kinds of wine. You ask the tender about it and taste it, and can learn a lot of great things about appreciating wine... they have these spit buckets (i.e. ornate jug) so you don't swallow. It's not about getting drunk obviously, since you're driving.
Uh reading what I wrote, it's not for everyone, but everyone should definitely try it.
I grew up in california, sonoma/napa valleys, so I don't know how accessible this kind of activity is to bostonites.
Pack a picnic basket, buy one of those 'go-anywhere-you-want-for-a-day' train tickets, and just pick a random platform number and get on the next train without looking where you're going. Get off when you fancy, pick somewhere to get lost in, and find a park or a field or something and eat your food together, alone, in a mysterious place.

Storm King is pretty rad and really not that far from where you are. May not be your thing though.
Beantown is fun and the North End is key. Mike's Pastry makes my favorite cannolli. Very easy walking city. New York is a real lot of fun but you'll need some time to take it all in and find what you like; you could always just putz around in Manhattan for a day if you feel adventurous enough. Montreal is an absolute blast but I've never been as a couple so I couldn't even point you in the right direction.

I live in Vermont and I can just tell you right now that the B & J factory is ass. The Teddy Bear factory is really nothing to write home about either.
The King Arthur's facility, on the other hand, is the fucking bomb. You can sign up for a class there and learn to make amazing bread from some of the best bakers in the northeast. If they try to sell you a lot of stuff don't buy anything more than a stone or a scraper; you can beat all of their supply prices on Amazon easily. Speaking of which Burlington isn't a terrible little city for eating. I'll list decent restaurants if you like or you can hit up one of the b & b's around here which I hear are quite charming although that isn't exactly my scene.

I like this thread. I need some fun idea my self! Also, not to take over this thread, but I need some "rainy day" acivities, as well. You know, things you can do in the house to make things more entertaining, when you and your boyfriend either feel too lazy to go out, or you don't have a car to do such?
Boston is maybe a bit too far, but it's a great city with lots of cool history. And stop by Salem, I love living here, it's a great mix of history and culture and lots of fun cheesy witch shit.
Also, I'll jump on the dance class idea, especially if you have the sort of relationship that you can laugh at each other and not get pissed off about it. You'll probably both look like fools at first, which is sort of the point of taking a class like that with your sweetie.
If you're sort of a geek (and, let's face it, this is PA) you might want to check out a university, maybe NYU or Yale or whatever. There's always something going on, and the areas around universities often have lots of cool stores and theatres and such to explore.

Personal favs include:
"Carpet dinner" - get some breads, humous, dips, meats, crackers, cheeses etc. topped off with a bottle or two of good wine.
Cook together
Bath... together :winky:
If you have the house to yourself, we recenty spent the weekend completely relaxing. I even bought the mattress from our bed down to the lounge... gloriously lazy.
Movies etc. sometimes we get a tv series dvd set if we want a full day of lazy...
When I was a burned out wreck with work, we rented a car for the day (cheap weekend rate! yay!) and just drove. We ended up meandering up Vancouver Island, stopping in all the little towns along the way. It made for a lovely day with no deadlines, no particular destination, and some nice stops at roadside produce vendors, small town cafes, and view points.
