This will be ugly.

This will not be a simple rant about the greedy gaming industry as i am used to do from time to time.

This is not made up, or pointless rambling - it is the bitter truth.

If you are in a good mood or simply interested in enjoying reding some forums - escape whilst you still can.

Let no one say i did not warn you.

The "subject" is Shadowrun, a rather nice online teamplay-shooter. Not a bad game i might add. Its one of those new Vista-only games (for computers, X-box is a totally different story).

No problem i thought - my harddisk died and i decided if i do not migrate to a DX10 OS by now i probably never will. And despite i really should know it better i (legally) aquired the OS and thought about giving it a spin.

I overcame new security measures (little windows wich ask for permmission for... ANYTHING and a accoutn management wich blocks everything, even the admin account) and network issues by diabling all those nice new features wich unfortunately are not working as supposed or intended.

So i brought with me, fresh from the shop Shadowrun. I installed it, started it aaaaaand:

*bump*

Windows performance score 2.9. The game requires at least a score of 3.0 to be launched. You may close the application now.

What the... ?

My comp is not THE newest but a good machine. I run most games on maximum resolution with all effects on without troubel. So i fired up the performance test to see what the dammed problem was.

Vista gave nice 5.9 and 4.9 scores... except... for the ram. I have some old modules there. Technically the speed of ram is not really that important for gamers because every grapics card deserving the name comes with ultra-fast video ram, big caches and memory pipelines. I never saw a neccesarity to replace the modules.

And now this expensive piece of trash denies me from launching MY game from MY computer because of a ram benchmark score off by 0.1. Basically telling me to go and get new RAM.

So i took the time to make sure the OS understood my current unwillingness to go and buy new RAM. I hope Vista's futile cries for help whilst being lobotomized at full conciousness send a shiver down the spine of some M$ employee. After we had settled who is boss and my RAM was actually deserving a 6.0 score i was able to launch the game.

Game performance was excellent by the way.

Only to be greeted by a X-box Live registration screen. They did pack a one month free subscription in the package... but paying 4.99 montly for a single game (wich only makes sense being played online, a shooter)?

I decided agains membership - it was being stated you could play it always on "pure servers", so i tried that.

And waddya say... completely empty. It was as i had entered a pocket universe - to boldly go were no man has gone before.

This is the future the gaming industry envisions? I say this is an act of war.

I'd say times for civilized manners are over.

And i guess i am just one of the first...

I'm...not sure what you're getting at.

And the thread title doesn't help.

Are you upset that Windows games are preventing you from playing because your system failed to meet the benchmark?

Also, I don't even know what a Windows performance score is. That some kinda "Games for Windows"-specific thing?

You should probably buy an Xbox 360, or a Wii. Or a PS3.

Yes, its a Windows specific thing. Or rather a M$ specific habit to milk the customer dry of all blood.

I am upset about being played for dumb (and not only me, every Vista user) as well about the charging of montly fees for normal o-games on personal computers. Wich basically is the reason why nobody plays this game. Wich means its dead because its designed for online gameplay.

In other words, its exactly the new kind of ripoff we will be facing in the future.

I agree with the $5 a month to play one game thing, I'm not to hip on this and micropayments. MMO's it makes a little sense to have the fee's, but an FPS? Now granted, the fee does pay for other games that come out for Live, but if you don't get those, your basically paying too much. I think another reason your getting screwed is that its mostly a 360 game, and so the pure servers will be empty since most players already are paying to be on the others. The rest of the PC players, seeing the pure servers empty, then fork over cash to play with the 360's. In essence, if you want to play this game for a long while, your going to be paying 2x the stick price probably.

As for your computer issue, well, you can bitch all you want, but really who hasn't come to realize that some part of their machine is ass and just needs to be updated? You should know that fast ram speeds help games and pretty much all programs, so don't just say the video ram is all you need, take BF2142 for example, it uses up 1.5gigs of RAM pretty much, just loading from ram to the video memory instead of from the hard drive to the video card which would kill performance.

I hate the games for windows thing. When i installed Lost Planet i was running it happily enough at about 25-30pfs, really happy with it, then the first time i get into a firefight my fps drops to like 15 which is totally reasonable for me, (i played all of tomb raider legend at about 12fps). but low and behold, my game stops, and a pop up box covers the screen telling me my computer is not sufficient to play this game, and i won't be able to continue until i have changed the settings. I proceeded to get this box everytime i fired my gun until i'd turned off every setting in the graphics menu and changed the res down to 1024x768.

when the hell did it become okay for a company to tell us how we can play the games? I can't afford a beast of a pc, so i'm just used to playing games with a bit of stuttering and slow down when it all gets heavy on screen... i'm fine with that, so i should be able to enjoy my £30 spent right?... not be left with a useless disk that i can't even take back to the store because it's a pc game....

    bah

Thats what I read before as well. Shadowrun is the first game to allow users between the PC and 360 play together (unless FFXI counts). Since it's the first there really isn't that much 'bang for your buck' to get a subscription on the PC side yet. However since the 360 users have to pay to play online it's only fair that the PC users have to pay some sort of fee for having access to those features.
