Printer Purchasing Help

Hello all. I could use some help in choosing a couple printers for the two different volunteer organizations I work for. The first one will only be used for making black and white prints and needs to be compatible with Ubuntu. The second will be used for colour as well as black and white and will be run off a Windows computer. Both will see serious use, so they need to be reliable. Both will be used by a large group of people, so they shouldn't be too obtuse to operate. Finally, since both these groups are non-profits organizations, cost is a factor.

I'd really appreciate any help any of you can give, even if it's just "Stay away from X brand" or the like. Thanks!

I've got a brother b&w laser printer. It prints, scans and copies. Despite the relatively high initial cost, it's a really solid machine, it's very quiet, very fast, and the toner cartridges are like $25 each. I'm not even kidding. It's got the cheapest toner I've ever seen, but it's also a really top notch machine. It was around $300 CDN though, not particularly cheap given that it's really just a B&W printer. Still, if you want the best, Brother seems to be a good brand.

I've got a Samsung ML-2510 that has served me well so far. It is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and variations of Linux, so Ubuntu should be covered. It's a decent B & W laser jet and, considering that all I need it for is printing text, it is perfect for me.

I had an Epson C86 inkjet which was...OK. It went through ink at a ridiculous rate, however, and was a bit on the expensive side to replenish. I'd avoid it.

Stay away from Lexmark. Also, I would make sure you can get cheap generic replacement ink for whatever model you end up choosing.
