Not sure if this has been posted already ... I saw this over at Arstechnica, they claim their source is pretty reliable having been right regarding the 360 HDMI on Premiums and Rock Band shipping with wired guitars.
The rumour is basically this:
Whoever our friendly inside source is, he's got some great contacts. Now he's ready to tell us what Sony's console pricing plans may soon look like. Here's how Sony's platform pricing will shape up by the holiday shopping season:
80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
PlayStation 2: $99.99
A $399.99 PS3 I think might make a big difference this holiday season, especially now that the PS3 has some games worth playing like Warhawk, and more on the way. Anyone else hear anything else about this?
Seriously. I'm fine with the 360's 20GB. Though I guess with Warhawk-sized games that would become a problem.
But I'm not much for multiplayer anyway. This PS3 would be great for my Uncharted, MGS, FF and R&C itches that need so much scratching.

100 bucks for 40 gigs? What?

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Why is the size of the hard drive always the defining factor between SKU's? I've never entirely understood the logic behind that.
There were more differences between the 60 and 20GB, and you can't really say it about the 60 and 80, because that wasn't 2 SKUs as much as it was getting rid of one of the SKUs. And this is still a rumor. But yeah, that wouldn't make sense really.

The flying fuck would they be thinking, selling them at those two prices.

Yeah it was mentioned in the sales thread. I should point out that the first time we heard the rumour it also sounded like Sony would take the Graphics Synthesizer chip out of the PS3 (meaning no backwards compatibility) as well as the wifi and memory stick adapters.
Of course nothing is confirmed yet, so that part could turn out to be bullshit.
ken kutaragi's job? i mean...crap...must...not...troll...
uh, anywho, i remember some figure around $200 being thrown around detailing how much they lost per console sold but I think that was at launch and for the 60 gig. I think...

I know that, but the size of the HD is always right there in the big bold lettering. Why not give the different SKU's actual names or something?
If true, the 40GB would be without the EE, since it'd be a new SKU. Perhaps the 40GB model will also be without the bits and bobs the 20GB one was missing?
The price difference between the SKUs makes no real sense, one of the myriad of reasons I can't wait until the whole concept of consoles with mutiple SKUs dies. I hate it so very much.
Spider-Man 3 is an interesting idea for a pack-in, from a marketing standpoint.
I would pay $400 for a PS3 if I had the money, which I eventually will. I really hope they get it down there for the holidays, before their window into the US market for this gen closes.
Oh man, getting a free movie is so shitty I should go to the forums and whine about it.
For once I agree. With your purchase of Spiderman 3 at $399 (I think it's a little overpriced), you get a shiny game console.
I really don't see the problem here.
I mean, yeah, they could have chosen a better movie, but only a couple of months ago the 360 was at $399 and it was doing much better than the PS3 is at $499.
I don't see how this could possibly be a bad thing for Sony. I'm not sure how they could screw it up.
No one cares anyway. Anyone who claims a movie ruined their life is an idiot.
Back on topic: This isn't a bad thing at all. With Holiday coming up Sony has to do something to strike back at the $350 360 and the $450 Elite, not to mention the Wii.
The old "I could get a PS3 for only $50 more" argument and all.

It still confuses me why they don't just drop the price on the 60GB and stop with the ridiculous splintering of the PS3 line up, but compared to their last blunders I am willing to accept this as a relatively good idea.

Ridiculous compared to what? Microsoft is coming up on four (technically five) different 360 models, with different features in almost all of them. Sony has two different models (potentially three) at varying price points. I'd say they're doing pretty well in comparison.
The only company to play it straight this gen is Nintendo.

True, but Microsoft has done a pretty good job of keeping the product lines from blurring. Core if you just want the (literal) core of the Xbox 360 experience, Premium if you want to dive into the world of digital distribution, and Elite if you embrace the other media aspects. The PS3 line up, on the other hand, has been shuffled around so much that it is almost confusing for me. I like to think of myself as a pretty well informed gamer, so when I have to pause and think about it for a moment, something is wrong.
That said, if they are indeed doing the 40GB, $400 PS3, I will likely buy one. I just wish they would decide what they want the PS3 to look like for once.
How is the PS3 lineup confusing to you? One has card readers, and WiFi, one doesn't. If you want to get complicated, one has an EE and one doesn't.
Pretty fucking simple.
With the 360, one has nothing but a wired controller, one has a hard drive and a wireless controller, one has a hard drive with HDMI and a wireless controller, one has a larger hard drive with HDMI and a wireless controller, one has a regular hard drive, and HDMI, and a halo faceplate. If you want to get complicated, one or more of the above are Falcons. Maybe.
And then we have Nintendo. One of them is a Wii.
My point is the PS3 isn't as much as a conundrum as you'd like people to think it is.

Agreed. I think some of them are just loyal to their Microsoft brand, that no matter what Sony does, it's confusing for them.
**Edit - Sidenote.... Can I be like those Apple consumers and bitch about the price cut? I paid full price for being an early adopter and would like Sony to cut me a 100/200 rebate, thx**

You know, I was the dumb one who bought the 20GB model. All I want from Sony at this point is my God damn wireless adapter.

Yeah. It's almost as bad as $180 for 120GB.
Or, $100 for 20.

Four I think. Same as the 360.

Also, Wired controllers for rockband was obvious, and HDMI 360 was more or less announced a long time ago.

60g - $600
20g - $500
60g - $500
80g - $600
And supposedly soon;
80g - $500
40g - $400
What is the true worth of the PS3?

There is a downside. PS3's will start leaving shelves. And remember, Sony says keeping the shelves full of PS3's is a good thing.

EDIT: And you have no idea. Spider-Man 3 ruined my life. But that's for another thread.
How is this possible? How could anyone complain about a free pack-in and a $100 entry price drop?
I won't derail the thread. Let's just say it hurts me to do it. But by all means, let's rejoice at Sony's smarts for dropping the price $100.
