Bangai-O's Trimphant Return! (DS)

InquisitorInquisitor Registered User regular
What’s Bangai-O you ask? Why only one of the best shooters made by Treasure, ever!

Bangai-Obox.jpg

Billed as a multi-direction shooter, Wikipedia has this to say about it:
Bangai-O, the player's mecha, is maneuvered via eight-way directional controls and fires in eight directions, controlled by the controller's four face buttons. Two firing modes involve switching between the two siblings piloting the Bangai-O; the player can fire either homing missiles or reflective lasers that bounce off walls.
Bangai-O's special attack consists of a 360 degree burst of the current shot type (missile or laser). The number of shots fired by the special attack depends on how many enemy bullets are on the screen and how close the player is to them while firing. A large number of close bullets can result in an attack of up to 400 shots. Furthermore, the number of explosions taking place at any given time is tallied at the top of the screen and determines how much the special attack meter recharges and what type of fruit is left behind by destroyed enemies. Higher numbers of explosions yield more special energy and more valuable types of fruit. Therefore, the tactic of inviting substantial enemy fire in order to counter with the special attack is key to success at the game.

Intense!

But still images just don’t do this game justice. Here is a British guy giving a review.

Chiefly British. (Some cursing)

But Inquisitor, you all say. This isn’t a link to the past thread. Why are you babbling about some old Dreamcast game I’m never going to be able to get my hands on. Ah, but fear not! It’s just been announced that this game is going to come out on the DS!! Weeeee!

bg15.jpg

Did I mention the game has a strange sense of humor? So come celebrate this news with me!

I, Inquisitor, declare, that shortly after this games release, a myriad of arenas will be built, tested, perfected and then put before all as a great challenge.

Whatever team can best the challenges of this pan continental Bangai-O challenge will rule the universe as father and son.

I'm concerned that the small screens would hinder the sheer joy you'd get from seeing 400 missles erupt from your superawesome mech, but I'll take what I can get when it comes to Bangai-O. I never did complete that game, but the 80% of what I went through were absolutely awesome:^:

Damn, I loved the game but the sprites are going to be so damn tiny.

Best shoot em up I ever played. 44 levels and I got through over half before I sucked too much to go on so I got some good value from it compared to most which only have enough levels for an arcade.

    Oh my.
A jewel of a game will cross the Pacific and delight gamers as Bangai-O Spirits was confirmed today for the North American market by D3Publisher of America, Inc., a publisher and developer of interactive entertainment software. Bangai-O Spirits is a compelling blend of twitch-fest shooter and puzzler genres, seasoned with strategic and tactical elements. Developed in the eccentric, much-loved style of TREASURE Co., Ltd., it is a re-imagination of their ’90s cult classic game Bangai-O, perfected for the Nintendo DS handheld system. Bangai-O Spirits will incorporate a powerful level editor tool, as well as revolutionary new technology known as Sound Load that allows gamers to transfer data among DS systems via sound files-a first for DS handheld systems. The game is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2008.

“It is an honor to bring a ground-breaking game by a respected developer like Treasure to North American game enthusiasts,” said Yoji Takenaka, chief operating officer, D3PA. “Bangai-O Spirits contains many key elements that define a truly enjoyable videogame-the innovation in both technology and gameplay make this a must-have title for everyone who owns a DS system.”

Bangai-O Spirits provides gamers with addictive shooter gameplay, punishing supermoves and a sensory overload of fireworks onscreen, with strategic and tactical elements and TREASURE’s quirky design style. The game also offers co-op, competitive multiplayer for 1-4 players via local wireless, a powerful level editor tool which allows players to edit in-game levels or create new ones from scratch, and the revolutionary new ability to transfer data among DS systems through sound data transfer technology known as Sound Load.

Never before utilized for DS systems, the Sound Load technology in Bangai-O Spirits allows players to transfer level data among DS handheld systems via the use of sound and the DS microphone. This technology works by taking the level data and turning it into a sound file which is output through the host DS speaker. This data is then interpreted through the microphone of the recipient DS, and the level transfer is complete!
It is also possible to upload and circulate sound files of level data from Bangai-O Spirits online via the Internet, or to save files to a recording device like a PC or jump drive for transport and distribution, allowing gamers to catalog, share and compare levels online easily with gamers all over the world! Widening the range of play and interaction even further, gamers can also deliver high score and gameplay footage as transferable sound files by using Sound Load. More details about this unique feature will be forthcoming soon.

While I love Bangai-O, I'm kinda disappointed its coming on the DS. The game play doesn't make use of the touch screen (I guess the stylus would be helpful in level editor) and yet I have to suffer with a tiny screen. Nintendo needs to get on the ball and release a DS player for the wii. You could simulate touch screen with the wiimote.

I suppose a tiny Bangai-O is better than no Bangai-O. (I blame the Japanese and their unhealthy obsession with handhelds.)

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

What? Why would you want to anyway? The stylus could easily block your view of enemies. Since they're only a few pixels high, in a twitchy action game it wouldn't make any sense at all. Take a look at around 1:31 and that's without a hand. You'll have to use buttons for accuracy.

It's being made by Treasure, who's been making games for over sixteen years. Whatever game related decision they make, I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing.

Thats my point, the DS isn't the best platform for this game. It would be better served as a PSN/XBLA (and to a lesser extent psp) game. In the original Bangai-O everything was so small. Now its going to be even smaller.

They're already intimately familiar with what the DS is capable of, with Bleach and 2nd. One of the things they love doing with hardware is pushing it to the limits so you can get the perfect amount of slow down during gameplay for dramatic effect. Treasure has always had a habit of doing this. Releasing this on any other system right now wouldn't make any sense.

The Wii Direct Pointing Device definitely isn't as accurate as the DS's touchscreen. This was confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata in the interview where they were talking about creating the Wii. It was tacked on as a afterthought at first because of the DS's success. The same was more or less said by the producer for Time Crisis 4.

Edit: Don't get me wrong it's just... While I would love to get a Treasure game with hi-res sprites on any other console, it's most likely not going to happen. That would require a ton of resources in pixel art which very few people specialize in nowadays. Treasure is a small company and they're going to stick to small games unless people start buying a spajillion of their games.

    Eurogamer Review
Some of the time it's like WarioWare; some of the time it's like Gradius; some of the time it's like Brain Training. But you never know what to expect. You never know if a map is going to be over in two seconds, or if you'll be dodging bullets for five minutes. And there are so many nuances, like the counterintuitive process of putting yourself directly in the path of danger because your bombs increase their power in proportion to the number of incoming projectiles, or grasping the need to switch bullets to solve particular puzzles.

This infinite variety brings us on to the problem with just listing and describing Bangai-O Spirits: as with so many things, the journey is so much greater than the destination. So much of the pleasure of playing Bangai-O lies in discovering that enormous variety, and getting to grips with the twisted logic that underpins it all. As you work your way through the 160 levels, that perplexing logic gradually reveals itself until you succumb. It's when you start to pick up on the jokes, or the tributes, or the experiments, that you'll begin to realise why Bangai-O is so utterly amazing. That's when you'll start to forgive its imperfections and its flaws - because when Bangai-O fails, it fails gloriously, or bafflingly, or interestingly.

That's when you realise that although Bangai-O is just a shooting game, it's far from just a shooting game. Playing Bangai-O Spirits is a pleasure. If I could, I'd play it for every waking moment.

    Fucking hell.
