This is Team Fortress 2. It's a sequel of some old game nobody ever played.
Anyways, this is team-based first-person shooter goodness. Using an awesome graphics style that is described as "a 60s spy movie meets
The Incredibles", TF2 is just oozing with flavor and style. Pick from one of nine classes and proceed to lay waste to the enemy. No "Army of One" stuff here: work together or fail.

Other Cool Stuff
Look on the Bright Side: If your "round" is a personal best (most damage inflicted, kills made, time alive), the game will let you know when you die.
Capture the Moment: Kodak invites you take a screen of your murderer.
Animation!: You can do a variety of animations. They depend on your class and current weapon. The Medic, for example, will play his Bonesaw like a violin. You temporarily leave first-person view when this is done.
Criticals: "Players are able to occasionally critically hit the enemy for approximately three times damage, indicated by a text icon that pops up over an enemy's head when the event occurs. Valve told us criticals are somehow related to player momentum, so if you're doing well, expect to see them more frequently. We noticed you could actually see a Demoman's critical grenades, as they'd sparkle white when fired. The same thing occurred for a Soldier's rockets."
Other Games: Hey, don't forget about Portal and that newfangled Half-Life 2 episode.

I'm definitely excited.
EDIT: Fuck, I just realised it might not be available in my region.
Still, with most classes without grenades and no expanded abilities to compensate, I'm expecting a game with far less dynamic combat than the original two versions, and classes that won't be much fun in a public server environment.
I can't wait for this one to ruin something new for me. So awesome.

team fortress 2 content.gcf in your steam apps folder, somewhere. you can listen to all the sounds.
I mean, he was definitely more of a support class in tfc
Sweet googli moogli they better have at least 2 player split
In TF2 they do seem to be more defensive, and on command-point maps the whole offense/defense thing is sort of irrelevant anyway.
* A freeze-cam will show the player that killed you,[7][6]
* Persistent stats tell you how you are improving[7]
* Ability to spectate a game[7]
* Critical hit shots are chosen based on a player's momentum on the scoreboard, causing rockets and grenades to show as a visible white sparkle. It is important to note the sparkle means that a shot is critical, not the hit, so a player could miss a critical hit if he misses the shot. When you hit someone with a critical hit, a text icon appears over their head.[8]
* Spawn rooms feature an equipment closet to restock ammo and items while standing in front of it (no bags as in previous versions)[8]
* Each class has different health amounts which determine their survivability (it is not simply a percentage)[8]
* You can pickup enemy weapons that replenish the engineer's "metal" count, which is the engineers building materials (may be like bags in older versions)[8]
* In Capture the Flag mode, flags take 30 seconds to return to base after being touched.[9]
* In Control Point Match mode, if you partially capture a point and die, it takes time to reset, giving your team time to get someone else there to finish the capture.[9]

I mean, where did this come from? This phenomenon? Is it because of points? People sabotaging? THATS BULLSHIT. There are so many simple fixes for that it makes my head spin (only on same team play, server-specific, votekicks). Im not a massive halo fan, but at least when freinds come over we wont have to take FUCKING TURNS for Halo 3 multiplayer. I mean did I buy these extra controllers for any reason?
This is one of those organic bullshit trends that becomes the norm overnight, and everyone looks at me like im crazy for complaining.
For a game thats entirelty multiplayer, lacking this component just frustrates me.
I think this is your problem, Prohass. It's mostly PC gamers in this thread and they're in a PC frame of mind, whereas your coming from a console frame of mind. That's why splitscreen is "questionable thing."
I dunno if the live version will have splitscreen.
This may be a feature sported by Halo 3, but that does not make it a good one. Especially not for a game that is by nature competitive (even amongst friends and on public servers; everyone wants to win) and dependant on quickly processing visual and aural information.
gameplay aside, the graphical style they chose to you... looks like shit. it's just blahh, it bother me terribly. i guess maybe if i understood the context behind the cartoon look they're going for...? was team fortress a comic? did it have some comic book version story that took place between TF and TF2? i can't really understand why people are so excited about this game - the first TF was alright, but it couldn't compare to any of the other good Half Life mods, like, CS.
i dunno, i'm not enthusiastic about it at all tho
most of all, most of all

Xenocide the style is perfect and cohesive, ala Windwaker, and Valves characterizations of classes are so detailed and lush it gives the term "class" new meaning. If you dont know what people see in it, you never will, move along. Your possibly trolling. Or just dumb.
Edit: I think split-screen is perfectly decent and probably a good idea for the 360, but damn, your posts are hard to read.
YESSUM
I guess I just wanted the best of both worlds. And not having been much of a TFer in the past, I viewed this installation, especially from a console perspective, as less than competitive, or at least focussed on multiplayer fun and shenanigans, with the wackyness and the whatnot. I do see your point, and I suppose killing will be fun enough.
Halo 3 will appease the lounge-room fpser in me, while I'll get my more cerebral fun and challenge from TF2. Which I am still immensely excited for, its style and artistic direction alone are simply awesome, it has more substance than most single player games.
That's not really true. Not everyone plays at a competitive level here, most just play for a fun, team based game. I can see why some people would want split screen. This coming from a PC Gamer too. To be honest, I would see it as more of a hindrance than a benefit to the players, but at least they'd be able to co-op together. They'd certainly have to be kept on the same teams, but after that, I'm not sure I see the problem. Perhaps there could be split-screen friendly and split-screen banned servers like Halo 3 does (as Prohass mentioned).
I mean, I intend to play this game, but I have no intention of taking it seriously and ultra-competitively, I just want to have fun with it. It's not crossplayer either so PC and 360 gamers aren't going to be on the same servers anyway. Which is just as well, because the last thing I want is for my team snipre to be on a control pad when everyone else is on KBAM (Sorry Prohass, but you know it's true).
As for other PC mutliplayer games that had splitscreen, didn't Serious Sam feature something along those lines? Or was it just co-op singleplayer?
Back on the topic of the beta, I notice an event has been scheduled in Steam. I would so be in on that if it wasn't 5.00 AM local time.
because this doesn't sound fanboyish at all
what exactly makes their "classes" so lush and detailed, that it could possibly change the entirety of a word?

So, much like Wind Waker, a lot of people will like it, and some people will complain about it for no reason because they can't appreciate things that look good. I'm tired of seeing game after game with the same fucking graphics. Call of Medal of Hyper Realistic Battlefield Plastic Junk 2008. At least we're finally getting to a point where these games start looking good, but they still all look the same.
Maybe I'm crazy but having something fresh to look at that's not the same "We're realistic too!" shit from so many other FPS games really makes my day. God forbid someone use some real colors in a game every once in a while. UT2K_ was great with this, Crysis looks semi-realistic while at the same time defining itself with its art direction. CoD4 and the like look great, but I'm so tired of gray and brown and drab. I'll still probably pick it up though. Also CS sucks. Get out.
While I largely agree, I have to say the first time I saw Heavy Weapons guy I thought "Mr. Incredible? What's he doing here?". Not necessarily a completely original style is what I guess I'm saying.
I feel that there's more than a slight nod to the Incredibles there, whether intentional or not.
shitty graphics aside, nobody has explained to me what makes this game great.
also, i hope you're joking about the CS thing, because if you're not, you're a total fucking moron. if you say Counter Strike, one of the most influential multiplayer first person shooters sucks? wow.

As a long time TFCer i feel like they have really taken away from the core of what tfc used to be, by throwing in quirky graphics and removing grenades (especially concs) plus the other really odd features (the healing shield thing ) I feel a bit let down, luckily there is fortress forever which i think will be truer to tfc as I value it.
What a coincidence that the beta for tf2 just happens to fall on the release date of FF though?
Hey I know, Im a avid CS player, I fully realize this is a PC shooter first and console second, still, with the imagery and gameplay, I would've loved some co-op online fun. Ah well.
And Xenocide, check out the recent CG character vids Valve has released. The writing and characterizations are awesomely realised. Visually its a kind of Spy/Incredibles themed game, and people who enjoy that visual style will be attracted to this. Also, its fun CTF gameplay, and its FREE with another 4 games. Hence the excited masses of 'fanboys'
Wow what? Popular? Yes. Influential? Certainly. Can a person still not like it? Definitely.
Personally, I'm not a huge CS fan either, but I think that's more down to the actual gaming crowd and how hardcore the game has gotten, to the extent that it's largely impenetrable to anyone not in it from the beginning.
As for "explaining" what makes this game great, in some ways I may as well try and explain why a joke is great. It's subjective. If you want to know why I feel it's great, it's because it's got a unique style, and cares more about goofy fun than trying to have some pretence at realism. It recognises it's a game and goes all out with the more crazy gameplay dynamics (Scout's double jump, medics ability to make people invulnerable. Spy's ability to dissapear completely.
Really it just looks like fun. I can't "explain" why I like this style of game anymore than I can explain a good joke without killing it.
As much as I agree with you about the grenade stuff and all that, do you not remember the original TFC and TF graphics? The game really has been cartoony from the beginning.
I trust the creators of TFC to know what direction they want to take the series, and to understand which gameplay mechanics work as being fun and which don't.
The game isn't a carbon copy of TFC, nor was it meant to be. The lack of grenades is part of the gameplay, and the game has been balanced with that in mind. Personally, while the crazy conc grenade tricks might be missed, the constant grenade spam won't be.
