I'm not so much angry about it not bring at midnight, but rather than we have not been given any time at all besides a "It won't be at midnight." from a second-hand source. Would have been nice to know earlier, I went to a friend's house to play it and uh...that was a bust.
It's probably going to be either 1200 EDT (unlikely) or 1200 PDT (fairly likely).
So if it's not unlocked in the next half hour, you probably have four more hours to go.
Now we can all sit, wait, and be patient.
I don't know what makes you think that. He said pretty clearly they're not aiming for a specific time. I imagine they'll just flip the switch the moment it's ready, and I'm not getting my hopes up for earlier than late afternoon PST judging from how insistent the guy was on "late in the day."
I would venture to guess, as someone alluded to earlier, they are trying to get the dedicated server files out there. As of right now, they only have the content files for TF2 available for the people hosting dedicated servers, not the .exe itself to actually run it. It's a new engine that they are going to migrate older source engine games (i.e. CSS, etc) over the next couple weeks/months so they are probably trying to get all the bugs ironed out the first time out.
Essentially, a bunch of listen servers would basically suck...
Fair enough I suppose, it's much less frustrating being unable to play because it isn't released than it would be to not be able to play because all the servers are buggy pieces of shit.

If only more mod teams would follow that logic...
Yeah, bad first impressions can really screw over a mod, it'd be nice if they got everything sorted so that they could actually get and keep a good community going for them.
I wouldn't expect tf2 to be much different about that sort of thing, although people would eventually try it again, it would hurt in the short term.
I was reading the recent IGN interview, and Valve talked about the future downloads like maps being free. Does anyone know if MS plans to charge for maps like they've forced other developers on the 360?
Did someone start a PA group for TF2 or did I just hallucinate that?
I think you imagined it.
And waiting right now really dosent seem so bad, if I knew how long I had to wait :S Will there be a popup or a ding or somthing once it becomes available?
Lost the link, but apparently it was from the Steam forums.
Ya, that's been up since Friday I believe. Just content though, not the full blown server yet but its about 1.5gb worth of stuff to grab that's up right now so it'll really save some time. FYI, don't need username or password, not necessary with new version of HLDS Update Tool.
So I don't know if this falls in some fuzzy area of forum rules or not (pretty sure not) but the TF2 Commentary files have been transcribed and can be read here

So are we absolutely sure that the preloading of TF2 includes the beta that will be released today? I was under the impression that they will be seperate downloads.
Preload TF2 for official release.
Download beta on beta day.
The files you're preloading of TF2 is actually TF2. The whole game.
Yes, but it seems people here are under the impression that the Beta is included in this pre-load. I have a suspicion that we'll have to download a whole new client: a beta client.

Seriously, that would be the stupidiest shit ever! Valve may have a problem about deadlines, but they're not stupid.

there is also the thought that this "beta" is a slightly less then gold product so that while it is beta its essentially the whole game.

I can see that happening, but I really find it hard to believe that we wouldn't get a final client at this point. The official release is, what, 25 days away? I find it more likely that this will be the final client that will be patched as a result of feedback and bug-finding on release day.
As for preloading, only TF2 was available for preload, not the rest of the Orange Box. I would imagine that it is indeed for the beta.
I agree with the sentiment in the last thread - this isn't really a "beta", it's a release candidate that they're releasing to the public that preordered the Orange Box, named as such to avoid pissing off third-party distributors.
sounds unlikely to have a seperate whole new download. probably most of the art assets will remain the same.. no reason why we should have to download them twice.. final will probably be just a patch over the beta.
Ok you heard it here first I think it will come out 3 pst.
Why is that? Because my classes end then and the world revolves around me :P. Looking forward to playing this instead of reaserching my position paper.
Yeah, head over to CVG for a new preview. It has some good screens and info.
Some key info:
Realising that really, there's no point in being a Medic or Pyro if you're not going to get any kills, support points have been brought to the forefront of TF2's makeup. Pay attention; This is the bit that warrants the '2' on the end.
Before, if you shot the cack out of an enemy team member only to have a snipers blast him in the head, you'd get bugger all points despite the fact you dealt the most damage. In TF2, anyone who gets a shot on target gets a point. So if a Scout gets a few shots off, a Pyro brings on the flame and then a Heavy finishes the target off, all three players get a frag.
For even the most rabid TFC players then, TF2 is looking like its going to live up to those nigh-on seven-year-old expectations. But of course you don't have to take our word for it; it's on Steam today for you lucky pre-purchasers. We heart Team Fortress.

Well, the article says you will get support points for dealing some damage, or healing people who do damage. I guess support points and frags will be separate?
I am so happy that assists are looking like a standard thing now. The assists in CoD 4 have made me so happy, if only for the knowledge that "Yes! I knew I hit the fucker!"

THANK GOD. I am so tired of snipers only playing to inflate their egos because they have a lot of kills and their K:D is high compared to everyone else.
The final bit I haven't heard anything on that I hope they somehow fixed is "spy checks." It makes it impossible to be an effective spy when everyone on each team shoots everyone on their own team all the time to see if they bleed, and it's annoying to get shot by teammates all the time. On one server I played on yesterday, some dude playing as a heavy sat in the inner entrance of 2fort and shot everyone that came in, regardless of color.

From the tf2 commentary transcript I linked to last page:
"#commentary\tf2-Comment040.wav [Robin Walker] With nine classes of characters, and so many
weapons and unique abilities, one of our biggest challenges was exposing all these combinations to players without overwhelming them. Even the shortlist of essential information is intimidating, including map goals, the whereabouts of their friends, who's shooting them with what weapon, and so on. We didn't have any way to make all of this information visual, so first we had to prioritize and come up with an essential list of things every player needed to know in order to just have fun. Information they could learn by playing the game-such as map layout-was of secondary importance; but there was also information, such as the Medic's invulnerability charge, that would be completely invisible unless we exposed it. We tried to avoid attaching 2D elements to the HUD as much as possible, since we wanted players to be looking at the 3D world we'd built rather than some abstract representation. For example, players always see their own team's spies as a spy, but they need to know how the spy is disguised to the other team. We tried a quick hack where we put an icon representing the spy's current disguise floating above his head. The icon proved baffling to playtesters. When we tackled the problem by putting cut-out paper masks on the spy, it not only fit the humorous style of the game, but it let players get all pertinent information directly from a quick look at the spy's model, thus keeping them focused on the characters and on the action of the game. We took this as a lesson, in how holding ourselves to a strong design principle can often force us to come up with better solutions, than if we'd taken the easy route."
Im not clear on spies. How diffrent/similar are they to old school spies?
Can i still diguise?
God i hope i can still disguise.
Absolutely. The Spy's disguise has been upgraded: to the opposing team you look like your disguise. To your team, you look like a spy but you have a cardboard cutout mask of the class you are disguised at over your face. This way you won't get shot by your own team all the time thinking that you're the enemy.
You can also cloak - ten seconds of invisibility. I imagine that this skill either charges over time or has to be earned, though, similar to the Medic's invuln.

Spies can both cloak and disguise.
