you can sticky-bomb jump
soldiers are generally more effective at range, whereas demo men are generally more effective with corners. I say it's map/situation dependent.
There's a short little passage-to-no-where near the final critical point in dustbowl that has a stairway to a two-story window setup. You can move between the entrance and the second story window quickly. From this area you have a great angle (both from the entrance on the ground level and in the window on the second story) toward the long path the attacking team has to take. Also, there's an ammo/health powerup that spawns near the window.
Did 3700 damage in one lifetime from that position as a demo.
So, I haven't found a real reason to play a soldier instead of a demoman, seems like their damage is fairly comparable, and short range grenades go the same speed if not faster than rockets. I'd also say demoman are more versatile due to the sticky bombs. Quick switching between the grenade launcher and the sticky bomb launcher and managing it well, I was rocking fairly hard earlier.
And last nights game on the PA server was amazing, mainly when I went on a crit streak as a hwguy on dustbowl and kill about 9 people within 2 seconds =D
Demoman shots don't explode upon contact with the ground, though. The soldier kills not by direct hits, but by area damage - shooting the walls or ground near the enemy. Because of this it is far, far easier for a soldier to hit an enemy than for a demo man to do so. They also have much better range and can fight against or at least threaten long range attackers like distant snipers or HWguys, and they also stand a far better chance of deterring a scout who runs by unexpectedly.
Thats the thing though, it seems splash damage from rockets isn't very high at all. Once I got the hang of the grenade physics it pretty much takes almost nothing to kill someone compared to a soldier. That and since they don't explode when they hit the ground, people kind forget about them and tend to run into them as they explode. I just kinda feel like the soldier needs something else going for him aside from just a rocket launcher and rocketjumping .
You can actually hold the fire button down and charge the sticky bombs for larger distance, but yeah, your points still stand. I am liking the demoman. I just need to get better at aiming the standard blue pipes. In TFC, it was always a good idea to hit your opponent after a bounce. I'd imagine the same strategy still works.
GOD! MY HEAD! JamSessionEin, your argument for not liking a beta is that it's a beta! Do you even know what a beta is!? It's not just some business buzzword meaning "HAY ITZ DOEN HERES A SNEEK PEAK"
In this case that's pretty much exactly what it is. Real betas don't start 3 weeks before release.
No, but for a game like Team Fortress 2, where even the retail versions require activation through the internet; they can push the end of the beta right up to the wire.
Nobody said that TF2 went into beta on Monday. That's just when the preorder plebeians got to start playing it.

I've been more successful hitting them while still in the air, it seems they lose a bit of momentum once they hit the ground compared to tfc.

I'm having a hard time playing the Pyro successfully. The range is just awful
Although I like his axe and shotgun taunt
Pyro is a real in your face immagonnarapeyou kind of character. Tight corridors, enclosed areas... I've been burn by so many of those assholes, it's bad. Plus, even if you don't outright kill them, you can soften them up hardcore so other people can finish them off neatly (and you'll share the kill).
It sucks for all those people that's crashing, but personally I crashed to desktop once and that was the only problems I had. In fact it seems to me as though it runs better than other Source games.
For some reason I can't change my SteamID page. I just get a weird error about how it expects an object when I try to save. It's rather irritating.
they need some grenades in this game. What's so wrong with just limiting the amount of grenades as opposed to getting rid of them all?
Negative.
Engineers can build reload stations, so just drop one right next to a choke-point, BAM! Nade spam.
so you limit how many grenades you're allowed to toss for any given time period. Grenade spam is very simple to overcome without getting rid of a crazy cool part of the game.

TF2 is an entirely different game. I am sure there are plenty of articles out there and no doubt posted in here about their reasoning for removing grenades.
Scout-
Double jump seems kinda unintuitive to use
Pretty hoss compared to the TFC scout, actually stands a chance.
Demoman-
Pretty awesome, favorite class so far, which is suprising considering I hated demoman in TFC
Grenades are really strong with direct hits
HWGuy-
Decently balanced, great synergy with the medic: this is what team fortress is about
Medic-
Played one for like 5 minutes, I didn't enjoy it very much
Pyro-
Finally useful! Requires some decent knowledge of your surroundings to be at maximum effectiveness
The DOT from the flamethrower does a ton of damage, really good for spreading mayhem and weakening everyone instead of just focusing on a single target
Engineer-
Haven't played him yet
From what I've experienced though, SGs are ridiculously powerful now
Soldier-
Played for like 10 minutes and just thought "meh." I'd really like them to add something else to this class, maybe something to make them a little stronger against SGs which would, in my opinion balance things out and create for options for offense. Rockets could be a little faster and have wider and more splash damage.
Sniper-
Didn't really play, liked the change to charging shots
Spy-
Wow, this class really came onto its own since TFC. A well played spy is a force to be reckoned with. Maybe as we see people getting better and adjusted to spy, the SG unbalance will fix itself. Seems a lot of them are focused on stabbing people rather than sapping SGs.
General-
I think they could do a few things to speed the game up and feel a little more cohesive such as:
A little strafejumping, nothing too crazy
More knockback from explosives, I think i've been hit into the air like 2 after 3 hours of play.
This is just oozes style and personality, and has a huge potential for high level team play in my opinion. So far, I'm loving every minute of it.

Played for about 7 hours straight, loved it. The spy is much more fun to play, because the cloak gives you a chance to infiltrate, and the ability to destroy engineer creations means it's not just a stealth/combat role.
For people who experience the black screen-desktop-black screen-crash problem
I had this exact problem(In all source based games) on a Radeon X1950 Pro with Catalyst 7.9 drivers..and I believe the newest Catalyst drivers were the cause because installing these..
..fixed the problem in all of my source games and I can now play..I hope that there is a fix soon as I have no idea how the old drivers will preform in game..but there you go.
I had a problem crashing in the game. I tried those drivers and now I cannot run TF2. When it opens and is done loading, it goes black screen-desktop-blackscreen-crash-my-computer.
So it appears there are really two different types of problems going on here. Those who can get into game but crash a lot while playing or loading the match up(I doubt there is much of a solution for this one)..and those who can't even get into the game at all in which case I recommend trying an older driver version such as the one above.
Catalyst 7.9 with certain video cards (I've heard AGP cards, but I really don't know if it's a universal issue) can completely ruin Direct 3D. I found that was not my issue, and for whatever reason specifying all the resolution situations on startup seems to have taken care of that.
First I used "-window", but have since found "-fullscreen -h (preferred height) -w (preferred width) -refresh (preferred refresh)" to work just as well. I'm personally currently running fullscreen 800x600, 60hz refresh until I spend some time on my old old old (old old old) machine finding a good balance between visuals and framerate.

so, i decided that i'd give the Scout a shot, when normally that kind of play isn't what i look for. I think i found my new favourite role, as captain agile there sure can perforate some chaps when he gets going. All-round good fun, though. And an unexpected cameo from CableCarrier.

I really do love this game. I found the Pyro is REALLY fun when you ignite someone, and then switch to shotty and rip them apart.

Well my X1950 is AGP so..who knows..
I don't think this is just to do with the ATI cards. My Nvidia is also suffering from the Black-Desktop-Black problem. I'll try the command line options though. What file do I add this to the end of? Do I create a shortcut of TF2 and run it from that instead of Steam?

Is there anyway to change the key binds for the in game sub-menus, like the spy's disguise and the engineer's build screen? I'm old school and use the directional keys, and numbers are way on the other side of the keyboard

I do what I can
just a susprise when you play as any character that isn't a medic..
good games, apart from the scout rush on that territory-capturing map, which i was watching from the sidelines as we were pummeled.
I use my AGP X850Pro and the OmegaDrivers based upon 7.4
I get into the game fine, but every now and then it will freeze up (replaying the last sound over and over annoyingly) and I have to restart my computer.
This most often would happen after I die and it does the freezeframe crap on my killer, but has happened with me just playing.

Hit esc and x out of the server screen that pops up(if one does not then skip this step) Click on options and go to controls and you can change it to anything you want.
And pyros are wicked fun when it comes to the 5 territorys maps. The burnination can take down a heavy pretty quickly if you leave the flame on him. Plus his apperance kind of reminds me of the poopsmith.
On the subject of launch options, if you want to remove the Valve thing at startup and the loading of a 3d level as a background when TF2 loads up, add these to your launch options:
-novid +map none
Improves my load into TF2 greatly.

WTF WHY IS PORTAL $20?
That essentially makes TF2 and all that half-life crap $25
I wasn't going to get the orange box, but $20 just for portal is a little steep.
But at the same time I don't want to give MORE money to a company I'm am currently pissed at.
Orange Box = $50 = 5 games (if you count the HL2 episodes as only half a game)
$50 / 5 is $10.
Not $20.

Holy shit, I love this game. I'm not much of an online gamer usually and I didn't play much TFC at all, but I am loving this game so much.
Spy is definitely my favourite class so far, so much fun being surrounded by enemies and having them take no notice of you, then sneakily sapping a turret or backstabbing someone. Fun trying to decide the least suspicious class to disguise yourself as too.
Medic is cool, I enjoy playing a support class and it makes it quite easy, my longest life has been as a medic too. Haven't had much of a chance to use the Ubercharge yet, only the once, but if used well it looks like it could be pretty powerful.
I've barely played Demoman or Heavy at all, I should try them out a bit more tonight.
Oh, and I LOVE the stats they give and the freeze frames when you die (although it would be cool if they took shots of your better kills and showed them sometimes too, like somebody mentioned before)
I need to buy a new mouse though, mine's been dying for a while and it keeps spazzing out on me
I had a lot of fun playing engineer for a while there.
The fully upgraded turret does seem a bit over-powered against most classes, unless you're a spy/demo/soldier it will pretty much destroy you without a chance.
The Spy is pretty much spot on. It seems too powerful at the moment but I think it's more to do with a lack of awareness and experience more so than being too powerful.
