well, i just got some information that my college dorm will be hosting some events for october that are horror-themed, one being a few nights of horror movies. as such, i need quite a bit of movies to show, and my horror movie 'well of knowledge' is pretty limited.
some movies i've been thinking of
Event Horizon
John Carpenter's The Thing
House on Haunted Hill(new version)
Unrest
The abandoned
The Gravedancers
Those last 3 are from the '8 films to die for' series, and i heard they were the best/scariest of the bunch, so any input on those are appreciated as well.
There is a thing worse than blindness. It is to look around you and find that there is no world for you to see.
I can guarentee you if you show the Abandoned people will be freaked, that movie is the right mixture of spooky ghosts, with appropriate gore. Highly recommend it.
House on Haunted Hill, and John Carpenters the Thing are also solid picks (I notice a theme with some of the movies you selected, bleakness good choice).
If you want a funny horror movie, throw Slither in the mix, it's got good gore combined with a funny as hell Nathan Fillion.

Heres the thing, horror is a big genre. What effect do you want?
Do you want them to vomit?
Jump in their seats?
Not want to sleep?
To question humanity and/or the existence of a God?
Big choices here.

jumping/not sleeping would be the best. vomit is never good, and these are college students which will likely be drunk and/or high, so questioning god probably isnt the best thing for them to do.

Feast is a good B movie style horror film you can add on there.
Slither gets a thumbs up from me as well.
The Thing is classic and almost a must have in my book
I'd also maybe throw in Sublime in there. Creepy little film.
And maybe even Jacob's Ladder. While not true horror its a damn good film
Aww damn, feeling your skin crawl and having you question the purpose of humanity and making you embarassed for being there watching this are the best ones.
I'll get back to this with movies that would work for you.

Bones. Great plot, and some scenes that are just plain shiver-inducing.

1) Anything in the horrorfest series (except for the japanese one by the guy that did the grudge and all that other shit)
2) Alien
3) The Thing (john carpenter version)
4) The Howling
5) Children of the Corn
6) Nightmare on Elm Street
7) IT
9) Poltergiest
Basically any good horror movie between 1975 and 1985 is going to have your bases covered : ) Stay away from the following:
1) Torture porn (saw, hostel, etc... it's just my opinion, so feel free to ignore, but I think those movies are absolute shit)
2) 90% of that "The ghost who'se looking for revenge" shit.... if it's a remake of a japanese movie, or it's about a young girl in a haunted house, read the box carefully before you show it. (Some exceptions are Amityville Horror series, and a few others)
Bonus points for reccomending slither.... good call....
One tip with slither, if you are going to put it in your rotation, do it after The Thing, a couple homages to thing are in the movie and it can gain extra laughs.
Also The Predator movies are good horror films, either one or two, though I know a lot of people don't like two as much.

I love Predator 2, but it's action if you ask me.
Extremely messy and tense, but action.

Yeah, Predator 1 is pretty tense though.
Stay away from Saw and Hostel. And anything else thats just violence porn.
Slither gets a thumbs up.
The Jason movies are pretty good, although I do think that they're more action, especially Freddy vs Jason.
that does not detract from the sheer awesomeness of it though.

I would say House of 1,000 Corpses, as it's one of the most unnerving films I've ever seen, but I guess you could put it in the Saw/Hostel category, considering the unending torture and agony is what creeped me out the most.

Agree with slowroll; Jacob's Ladder is a fucking must. Seriously. It should be subtitled Jacob's Ladder: You Will Shit. It really covers all the bases - it's got some gross bits, a lot of spooky bits, paranoia, existential dread, and some really unsettling imagery that will quite literally haunt your sleep for weeks. And as a bonus, it's really intelligently written and has some useful things to say about the human condition.
Another good but overlooked one is the recent quasi-indie horror flick Session 9. A small group of construction workers are doing asbestos removal on the abandoned campus of the real-life Danvers State Mental Hospital, and one of them discovers a secret room behind a rotten wall that has tapes of mysterious, decades-old psychiatric sessions with a sinister-sounding patient. Spooky shit ensues. What's great about the movie is you know going in that it's a horror flick but it doesn't give away till the end what sort of horror movie it is - whether it's a serial killer flick, a ghost story, a paranoid fantasy, et cetera.
Ring. not 'The Ring' or Ring 2 or all the Juon-type ripoffs. Just the original.
Dark Water - the Japanese original. I saw it at a cinema in London, and it's the only time I've ever known English people scream during a film. I yelled a little, and was grateful my neighbour screamed her head off, covering mine.
The Shining, of course.
Jacob's Ladder was good, but I haven't seen it since it came out in the cinema.
Personally, I'm not scared in the slightest by all the gorno stuff - Saw etc. It's gross, but that's all. I don't really think of it as horror. Se7en was a lot scarier than Saw.

I don't know how you classify Ring-style horror, but it never fails to creep me out.
A Tale of Two Sisters wasn't scary at all, but I kept thinking something nightmarish was going to happen.
(See also: Blair Witch Project[unsettling, but again,
True Story:
I actually had an honest to goodness nightmare about it. Came to work the other day and spookily a wokmate had watched it with her boyfriend the night before and he had a nightmare too!
I was in a video store and a friend suggested getting it (there was a group of us). I said its really good and really scarey.
"So, is that a yes? Shall we get it?"
"I'm not fucking watching it again man."
I would say stay away from remakes, with the exception of The Thing. Neither version of House on Haunted Hill is scary, but at least the original has Vincent Price.
Just tossing it out there, Slither was great but it wasn't scary in the slightest. Same for Feast. Both really funny "gross out" horror movies, but not scary.
I'll second The Shining, cause Jack Nicholson just wants to bash your head in. Just bash it right the fuck in.
Now here's my question. How about really tense "thriller" movies. Not horror exactly, but the drama movies that end up with more jumps than your average horror movie? Are those options as well?
more towards the scary side:
john carpenter's the thing
the shining
jaws
halloween
the wicker man
in the mouth of madness
more towards the b-movie/humor side:
shaun of the dead
army of darkness/evil dead2/evil dead
abominable dr phibes
return of the living dead
dawn of the dead(original and remake are both very good)
frankenfish(really!)
Frankenfish was horrible, it's played serious but the movie blows! The only fun you can have is laughing at a horrible B movie. You'd be better off renting Froggg (not a typo) a movie about a horny human frog who rapes women, I shit you not.

Bah Frankenfish was hilarious...Any movie with a guy macking on a girl using the line "You look pretty good for a girl covered in fish brains" is OK with me. Really good B movie.
thanks for all the replies so far, however, i'm really only looking for horror movies >.<, not so much stuff like shaun of the dead or slither.
so far my list is:
Event Horizon
John Carpenter's The Thing
House on Haunted Hill(new version)
Unrest
The abandoned
The Gravedancers
Jacob's Ladder
The Howling
Wolf Creek

I saw Gravedancers and Unrest and I suggest you pass. Most of what has been suggested is better than those two. They're not bad but there's a lot better.
My personal suggestion is The Descent. Also, The Exorcist (the 1970s original. Not anything else)
I love The Thing but....is it really considered a 'horror' flick? I dont remember being scared or anything, but it's a damn good movie.

Not sure if anyone suggested it, but avoid 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'. I was bored and it was on Showtime or some shit once.
It's not a horror movie, it's a Catholic recruiting film disguised as a horror film. Even if it wasn't, it's still terrible.
Jacob's Ladder, Event Horizon, Session 9, Silent Hill (to some extent), The Thing, House on Haunted Hill, and so on are all pretty good picks.
If you want something that's more gore than 'mental' you can't go wrong with Hellraiser. They won't win any Best Picture awards but they're fun to watch at least once.

Hell yeah The Thing is horror. Definitely put The Thing on there. I'd actually avoid Event Horizon. I liked it, but there's better out there. I absolutely love John Carpenters Halloween, but avoid the sequels, unless you like laughing at the very silly and unrelated Halloween III:Season of the Witch. The Shining would be a good choice.
Edit: If your peeps have high tolerance for wierd artsy Italian directors Suspiria is an interesting view. It does have long spooky scenes with no real point, but it also has someone stabbing a big circle hole in a girl's chest so that they can stab her exposed heart. (get the unrated version)
