Microsoft gets generous with Office Ultimate 2007
When it comes to productivity suites, Microsoft's long-running Office almost always gets top billing. Sure, there are alternatives like OpenOffice and StarOffice available to consumers, but Office sets the standard.
The latest version of the software suite, Office 2007, was released to OEMs on
November 30, 2006. Retail customers were able to take possession of the software on
January 30, 2007.
One area where Microsoft hasn't always been competitive with Office, however, is with pricing. While
OpenOffice and StarOffice (
most recently) are available for free, Office 2007 can get a bit pricey when you start piling on applications.
Pricing ranges from $149 for Microsoft Office Home and Student to $679 for Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 ($539 Upgrade).
Microsoft has decided to take it a bit easy on college students with "
The Ultimate Steal" promotion. Although many college universities offer steeply discounted versions of Microsoft software, this new promotion is
direct from Microsoft to students.
College students with a valid university ".edu" email address, are enrolled in at 0.5 hours of coursework and can provide documentation of enrollment can purchase Office Ultimate 2007 for a mere $59.95.
Students can download the software direct from Microsoft or have a DVD shipped out for a fee.
"We’re listening to students who have told us they need Microsoft Office for their studies and want more flexible ways to get the latest version," said Microsoft General Manager of Worldwide Education Alan Yates. We’re committed to providing accessible and affordable technology to students so they can meet their academic goals. The Ultimate Steal is the latest in a long history of providing compelling academic offers for students."
"Students" who cannot provide documentation that proves they are enrolled at a "higher education" institution
will be liable for the full $679 cost of the software.
Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 includes Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, Microsoft Office Access 2007, Microsoft Office Publisher 2007, Office OneNote 2007, Office Groove 2007 and Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007.
"The Ultimate Steal" promotion is currently available in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The program will be available in France, Italy and Spain beginning September 20. The promotion will end on April 30, 2008.

Being a student has some perks.
Plus I'm sure there's some sort of tax break incentive here.
I might have to pick up a copy for myself though

If your school charges more than like $5 for an official transcript they're absolute dicks... and most schools should have some sort of unofficial transcript / proof of enrollment that should suffice (0.5 hours seems low enough that they won't go into too much effort checking your credit hours). Even Geico only required an unofficial transcript / proof of enrollment for an auto insurance discount, and this seems even less official than that was.
I may buy this.
I'd rather they do the same promotion for Vista though...

Microsoft has a long history of discounting, and outright giving away, their software. It builds good responses from customers, and also gets them used to using the Microsoft products.
A whole batch of students who are used to using Office 2007 are likely to get their future employers to use the software, or even choose it themselves when they become employers.
Office 2008 for Mac. The successor to 2004.
It's not supposed to be released till next year sometime, so it'd be hard to include in this promotion.
Screw the government making only $4000 of college tuition tax deductible per year. Seriously, what year are they in, 1920?
It comes pre-installed with tons of applications, which are theoretically the property of the university and don't belong to me.
However, Windows XP + the avaible Windows Vista upgrade + Windows office 2007 belong to me entirely.
I paid a $170 CAD installation price, which includes the Microsoft software. And the installation.
Edit: I don't think I have Ultimate though.
When I ordered from the Adobe student store I had to provide either a copy of my transcript with the date or my student ID with the date. I imagine Microsoft's would be similar if not the same.
It's full price, and of course we don't have any .edu email accounts.
But I guess on the other hand I am saving thousands on tuition and living expenses.
The real question is--How the hell does one get Vista for cheap? My school apparently blows for this sort of thing, unless you're a computer science student and eligible for the MSDN rates...
Is there a noticeable upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2007? Or is it purely cosmetics?
And, on a side note, should I ever resort to Open Office if I'm ever feeling broke? It looks perfectly competent to me, but admittedly not as... pretty.
At the very least, Word 2007 has a dramatically improved interface, as does all of Office 2007, but in Word it's most useful, with the format selection toolbar and bigger context menu.
Outlook 2007 makes custom category creations/assigning multiple e-mail categories easier.

Depends on how many of 2003s features you used. Most people barely scratch the surface with what you can do with Word 2003, they wont see a difference except the interface.

Saving to PDF without any Adobe programs can be extremely useful. Depends on your setup though.
The proofing tools (like automatic bibliography/references) in Word 2007 are great too.
I'm actually thinking of picking this up.
If you use Office 07, if you save your files the regular way they can ONLY be opened by another copy of 07. Nothing older. At all.
I've heard that you can save your file in a way that 03 can open it, but I'm not sure as to the details.
This is why 07 is so cheap.
Beware.
Edit: I'm oh, so wrong.
Bullshit.
Unless you call "Click Save As-> Word 97-2003 Document" too much work when you want to give the document to some other people...
I really can't see them selling it cheap just because people have to go "Save as" rather than "save" if they're going to be opening it on an older version O_o
edit:beat'd =(
97-2003? I was told it was just 2003.
Liars.
Never mind, then.
There's also a compatibility patch for Office 2003 to open 2007 Word and Excel files.
Excel has a brand new set of super-pretty charts (PowerPoint might have gotten them too) and much better conditional formatting options. I believe they also made the maximum size of the sheet bigger, but I never have that much data anyway.
Access got a pretty dramatic revamp, but I don't know how many people here use that anyway.
In response to "Is Outlook a good e-mail client"
It depends. It gives you a lot of organizational tools, especially in an office setting, but it's e-mail formatting engine uses the MSO formatting language instead of HTML, so all those nice HTML letters that many companies send out get completely butchered unless the company takes the time to cater to the extreme limitations of Outlook 2007. Most don't.

Ditto. Except I got Vista for free too.
Problem is, I already have Office Student 2007. So like, is Outlook and Access worth the $60?
