[RecommONd] PC Flight Sims

So I won a pretty bitching Saitek flight stick today, and I'm looking for some flight sims to use with it. I already have Heroes of the Pacific and MS Flight Simulator 2004. I really prefer air combat games to straight flight sims, so I doubt I'll rush out and get MSFSX any time soon. I'd also go for some space flight/fight stuff if there's anything good on that front.

Fresspace is supposed to be fucking amazing and it's freeware now. It's an old-school space fighter sim a la X-Wing, I think.

There's also MS Combat Flight Simulator 3 if you're into the realistic stuff.

    Freespace
    Freespace 2
    X-Wing Alliance

All old, but still the best in their field.

X-3 - for something more cerebral...

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

For a change of pace on your standard flight sim, I've heard Allegience is pretty good. Best way I can describe it is Freespace meets Command & Conquor with most units controlled by a single player.

IL-2 Sturmovik series and Falcon 4.0 are still heralded as some of the best sims on the market. I absolutely recommend IL-2 and its successors. There's also a WWI flight sim in the works, Knights of the Sky, which utilizes the IL-2 engine.

I was thinking about this earlier today but what little is left of the genre (on pc) is pretty much sim games and very few of them. Gone are the glory days of Jane's and whatnot. I think it would be pretty sweet to see something like Ace Combat come to the pc. Could play it on a 360 gamepad or uber HOTAS setup. Not super realistic as to turn off casuals but not arcadey enough to turn away flight junkies.

Woah... there's a new installer/updater/downloader for the FS2 SCP which is astounding.

    1946: IL-2 Sturmovik

...for the complete Sturmovik series and more.

    Falcon 4.0: Allied Force

...Retail stand alone upgrade version of the original.

    Independence War 1 and 2 (I-War)

...Just as good as the Freespace games IMO, but 2 has more privateer elements included.
