I have a 54 mage, which I really want to get to 70, BUT.

He is woefully undergeared. He has +43 fire spell damage.

Yes, +43.

I'm willing to put in the work to gear him up, but where do I even start?

An arena link would be helpful. Also, this should probably be in the mage thread.

+spell dmg doesn't really start accumulating until outland. Just suck it up and flail blindly to 58 and you can start fresh from there, with a few BoE greens if necessary.

Ok, thanks, and also, I'm looking through some grinding guides, but where would be the best place to level?

Seconding the "you won't find much +damage until outland" sentiment. Do not worry about it before 58-60. Grab some decent greens of the eagle or of fiery wrath and finish out Winterspring, the Plaguelands, and Silithus.

    Ta-DA!

Unless by some strange chance there happens to be a different level 54 mage who shares his forum name.

Your gear really isn't that bad. You are just in slow level territory.

You have 4 levels to go till outland, when gear really skyrockets. What I would do, be constantly in LFG for BRD (The whole instance is pretty much humanoids, so you'd be very welcome). BRD makes decent experience, and also drops worthwhile loot for a caster, from nearly every boss. Meanwhile do Plague Lands/Burning Steppes quests. The game does get harder/slower as you progress.

You can also check AH for "of the sorceror" greens. I'm not sure at which level they start (I think 57), but they are great for levelling up a caster.

You may also want to head to Un'Goro and look for any uncompleted quests, same with Felwood, Azshara, Searing Gorge, Blasted Lands.

Using a site like WoWhead will help you scour the areas a bit more.

Also, you have +fire damage with a deep frost spec. Either switch the +fire gear for something with nice stats, or change your spec around. I played fire from 1-70, so i'm a bit biased. This might be a bit more suited to your needs. The basic rule is that frost trades damage for survivability. But you're a mage. It's your job to melt faces, so unless you're at 70 and want to arena for your epix, i'd say go fire. Once you get the hang of what you can handle and how to gtfo if the shit hits the fan you'll be able to grind a lot faster.

This did not deserve it's own thread.
