For the Veterinary Types: Bloat and Vegetarian Glucosamine?
My dog has developed bloat three times in as many months, twice requiring surgery, most recently the stomach had even flipped over. What’s odd is that this is not a dog remotely prone to bloat—he’s a 38-pound Chow/Corgi mix with none of the features of breeds in which bloating usually occurs. He also does not exercise after eating—he just sleeps. The vets are sort of at a loss as to why this dog is bloating.
There is one thing that stands out in my mind: my dog is arthritic, and so—on veterinary orders—we give him a vegetarian glucosamine supplement because the shellfish supplements give him diarrhea. He never had gas problems before he started taking the stuff. Unfortunately there are very few dogs taking this stuff, so there’s no information on the subject. Has anyone out there who works with dogs seen this stuff causing problems, or read about it anywhere?
