A Living Space Predicament

Backstory: I moved into this apartment in July, signed the lease with a roommate.

Problem: I've decided to move out into a newer apartment with two new roommates. My lease is not up until the end of October, but we want to be in a new apartment by the end of this month. I tried to get my current roommate to sign the relinquish form so I could get out of current lease, but the shithead won't do it unless I pay him October's rent, which I can deal with.

The problem is this: I need all the cash I have right now for moving into the new apartment, but I don't know if I can be on two leases at the same time and my roommate won't sign the form until I pay him October's rent.

I'm confused. You just stated the problem and how to fix the problem. What exactly do you need help with?
You really cant hold it against the roommate either. You've been in this apartment for less then 3 months and you already want to bail on him. I'm assuming he went into this counting on your half of the rent to make ends meet. Of course he is going to need you to help with the next months rent while he makes arrangements to either find a new roommate or a new place to live. Not counting moving cost if he has to get a new place too.

The problem is, I can pay him, but not all at once. So what I want to know is that if I'm already on one lease, can I sign another one?

Edit: Also, he's had the entire cost of rent paid since April. He paid it all up front. So no, he's not counting on my money to make ends meet. His reasoning is that he ran up a credit card on crap he didn't need and wants my money to help pay off his card. Also, he's trying to put it all on me to find someone else to fill the room and is putting no effort into it whatsoever.

You want to fuck your roommate over by making him pay your half of the rent, and he's the shithead? What? The solution is pretty clear here. Don't be a dick.

You're missing the point of this completely. All I'm asking is if I can sign two leases at once. I've looked through the lease laws for the state of Florida and have found nothing addressing it.

You can sign two leases at once, they are not that legally obtuse.

And yeah, pay the guy your half of the rent.

This is what I was looking for. Thank you. And yeah, I figured I'd end up paying him the half anyways.

Or find a subletter to take over your spot for a month. Officially or not.

if you're not finding someone to replace you (which you should be), pay him the money. And yeah, you can rent as many properties as you want, there's no reason that would be restricted.
